Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

I really can't format my PC again, I can't download anything here for a while, and when I can its about 50kb/s :/

Backup your actual game files mate, just copy them onto portable storage and whack em back in your Steamapps afterwards and revalidate.

If none of that appeals to you, and you don't mind not having the online features (basically failing to summon while being invaded 24/7 by DLC spell abusing *****), put an xliveless.dll into your directory.

Had a dream last night that I killed the Blacksmith Golem in Anor Londo, I woke up sweating and upset.

That's when you know you need to get a life. :D

Damn it all to hell. Installed this yesterday and lost pretty much the rest of the day. Managed to get the Parish bell rung, now for the lower one.

Actually looks pretty good at 2560x1600 with DSfix and a few other tweaks.

Took me a while to get used to the xbox controller again but found the controls surprisingly easy to get to grips with. Lock on definitely helps loads, as does having an axe for sweeping.

Use a Halberd (found infront of the Parish Castle entrance) or a Spear. Halberd just has stupid range and damage, and a Spear has stupid range and you can use it through a shield so you can attack without worrying about them hitting you. The Halberd's power attack is a 360* spin iirc, hits everything around you so it's incredibly useful.

Agreed with Dsfix the game looks like a modern game imo, sure not the best looking modern game but still looked very nice.

No game looks better IMO than this with max SMAA/SSAO at a high res, nothing. That's probably just the art style and design of the armors/weapons/world/etc. though, but I really can't think of much which looks all that much better without running like a bag of spanners.

I really don't get the hype around this at all, just as you hear people wanting to get away from the grind....others relish it.

Everything from the unfriendly PC deal you get and have to mod,

We not only get it cheaper than consoles, we also get early access to the DLC. Also if you find it hard or tedious to extract a folder into your directory and change a few numbers in a config file, then sell your PC and go play on the Xbox.

to a spastic menu system,

Feels completely fine to me, I don't know what else you expected? It's fit for purpose and works, sorry that it doesn't have an integrated GPS system like most other RPG's and a built in difficulty slider.

cumbersome combat which for the past god knows hours/days has been relegated to "Shield up, wait for enemy to swing, attack, shield up again" over and over x1000.

If that's how you play, then you're a fanny and you're completely missing out the point of using dual weapons, 2 handers, parry daggers, rapiers etc... basically the entire game! If you want to use a sword and shield what do you expect?

The whole living in a corridor world is bothering me as well, or the boss is so big half the time it'll let you roll through it/run through it and other times you might aswell be stuck between a wall and a hard place ffffffffff alright I'll stop.

You don't live in corridors. More of the world is spent in gigantic open spaces with gorgeous vistas, and it has the best designed game world in recent time.

But you get the point, I'm just glad I didn't have to spend money on it and I'm still giving it a go to play with my friend but, I have to force myself to play. It's not the difficulty or dying really, it's just the game itself I'm struggling to have fun in.

You didn't have to pay yet you can play coop? The pirating world has evolved then, either that or it was a gift, and if so be grateful?

I dunno, it's almost as if people haven't played any other hack/slash or dungeon runner before and suddenly thiers a novelty in grindy repetitious death, or it's a masochists game!

There is no grinding, you either suck and die, or don't suck and don't die. Do or Do Not, there is no Try.

So what it comes down to, is that you suck, and believe the game sucks because you suck. You should stick to Skyrim or whatever it is you play. It's this kinda of attitude that's turning almost every game into an overglorified Heavy Rain.

I was a little surprised that you can't sell your items.

You can, just wait until an undead looking gigantic penis bursts out of the ground in Firelink Shrine. :D

It has big floppy ears and funny teeth, weirdly enough. :p

What it comes down to is that you're having an aggressive reaction based of many, many assumptions and have an inabilty to read the very clear point below.

No personal insults
It's not the difficulty or dying really, it's just the game itself I'm struggling to have fun in. If that isn't clarity enough let me expound, I don't like the game, I don't have fun in it. I will still give it a try and continue to progress, but it's difficult when you're not having fun.

First person to not dislike the game cause they can't do it then, you're the first person to actually think the gameplay mechanics are bad, nice.

First you assume I found it hard to mod, then go on to do the same with the interface navigation to think I meant guidance and difficulty.

Then why try and use the fact you have to fix it to get it working properly as a negative tick against it? It takes 5 seconds, you never, ever see anybody insulting games that are technical pieces of trash like Skyrim and War of the North, and they aren't even fixable.

As for the interface, it's built for purpose and does it's job perfectly . It's clunkiness comes from the fact you aren't supposed to use it mid combat, Otherwise it's easy to manage, there just aren't any shortcuts to speak of. It's no more clunky or hard to use than Steam itself.

To add more assumption, is that you don't know (well you can figure it out) what class I play nor know what items I have at the time and think I don't know you can use more weapons, what I'm saying is the best tactic for now is to just block -everything- and then strike. It works every single time, without fail, I've yet to get that far to do otherwise, pay particular and special attention to the fact I've only played for a few hours over the last 3 days.

"gigantic open spaces with gorgeous vistas"

Sorry (I'm being sincere here) but, I may be wrong here and I will happily concede since it seems to be a competition about who's right or wrong with you, but before I played the game every single video showed corridor gameplay, when I got the game that's exactly what I got. Lots and lots and lots of endless corridors, a few open platforms and wide bridges but for the most part just invisible ankle height walls, but if you can show me otherwise, please, do..

How far have you got exactly? The only closed areas are the Parish at the beginning, the Duke's Archives, Anor Londo Castle and The Depths... oh and the Chaos Tunnels. Those are maybe 20% of the game? You've been playing a few hours, you've seen nothing of the game yet.

To add EVEN MORE assumption you assume I pirated it because I didn't pay, then add the tidbit of it being a gift at the end of a loaded statement, of course it was a gift, all I said was I didn't pay for it.
Also, what business is it of yours if I should be grateful or not, of course I'm grateful, but I can't make myself like something I didn't ask for. (Edit: Also, hah... even with an experienced player showing me the ropes coop isn't working for us) :| But we assume it's level disparity, so I'm getting higher level.

The online is the only **** thing in the game, it's pathetic, it was the same on the 360 and it's beyond disappointing.

Edit: Apparently internet forum browsers is that, if you don't like a game you must also be bad at it.

Far from it, but so far all the bashing on this game has only come from people who don't like being punished for dying, and blame the game for them dying when in reality they are bad, it's the common scrub's go to with any game, really.

You accused the game of being a giant grind, so what else would somebody assume? The only grinding in this game is from dying, and if you die, that's on you, nobody else.

Were you also the person that previously said it's the best graphics in a game you've seen?

It looks better than the majority of games, but I've never said it has the best graphics in a game, but it's miles ahead of it's competition, and better than anything to come out in the past 6 months, Crysis 1 and 2 still beat it, as does Metro. Don't put words in my mouth mate...

As for the things I didn't directly respond to, I concede and apologise.

Oh, that thing with sort of flappy ears? Well, if I can sell to a gigantic would be Alice in Wonderland rabbit then I'm game for that? :D

He can eat Titanite as well, like you can feed him a Titanite Slab and get 3 Chunks, or feed him a Large Shard for 3 Shards blah blah. :)

I can't even respond to Omaeka, a post with cleverly placed insults and reasoning which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever on this world or the next.
Apparently, asking a question about someone is putting words in their mouth? How can anyone take him seriously, honestly, how? You can't reasonably expect normal conversation to happen with someone like that.

I cam here about my view on the game and apparently I'm the first person to ever not like it(the mechanics), ahaha what absurdity is this? "First person to not dislike the game cause they can't do it then, you're the first person to actually think the gameplay mechanics are bad, nice." Is he clairvoyant? Does he ..ah screw it, I give up, honest.

Cleverly placed insults? That was banter, harmless banter, pure and simple, but cheers for abusing OcUK's ridiculously PG13 moderating system and getting me an infraction. There are twice as many insults in what you just posted than everything I've posted in this thread, and you give up? Hilarious mate, I was just thinking the same, doubt I'm the first either.

Funny how somebody in the past has gone completely off topic on here and straight up wrote an entire post comprised of nothing but personal insults directed towards me, so I report them instead of defending myself (cause I'm always the one that gets done for it, never them) and nothing happens, infact a moderator replies to the topic normally right underneath them LMAO but when I joke around with somebody who has the sense of humour of a rock what do I get? Red card. Sporadic moderating at it's best. I aint the first to think that either, that's nothing against Burnsy, but the things some people get away with compared to others is downright pathetic.

People need loosening up, being so serious and uptight can't be good for their health.

*Everything from Thread*

I don't think you realise something here, I don't care about your opinions on the game, you are entitled to them. We have polar opinions and I was giving you a hard time and some banter for a laugh, your reaction is pretty standard for this forum tbh and I'm bored now. I'm glad you haven't given up yet and I look forward to hearing your full opinion when you've experienced the game properly. Such a shame I had to be redcarded (2/3 now) though, for absolutely nothing, innit.

P.S: If you find being jokingly called a fanny as offensive and consider it a 'cleverly disguised insult' or whatever, the last thing you should do is attack multiple people and go on about how they have bad logic, they are defending a game they love, the term 'glass houses' applies pretty perfeclty here. WoW is complete trash, am I in the thread telling them how lame they are for shelling out £30 per expansion that they can't even play without subscriptions, etc.?

Dark Souls has it's merits, which are all very well deserved (unlike most games these days) and I personally cannot see how you can dislike it without dislike the entire action RPG genre, it's a stellar example of what they should be like. You critsized the inventory system but never even began to say why, you claim it's all stuck in coridors yet anyone who has played the game will tell you different and also claimed it's a grind. The game is far from a grind unless you die, or like me have OCD and have to fully upgrade every piece of gear when it isn't at all neccesary. Like I said, if it's a grind tell us why you think it is, but you won't...

Because it's a grind to you because you die and have to fight through it all again...

Performance wise it's good, and with the DSfix which takes about a minute to get working from the moment you click 'download' it's one of the best lookers too. Definitely worth getting and PC is the superior version despite being a flaky port.

I'd agree with that. Out of the box it's not the best version, but with a few mods (which take minutes to install) it instantly becomes the best version you can get. None of the mods are real game changers, but they all subtly improve the game way beyond the version you get when you install it.

The better faces pack, visible health bars and the high resolution text/better UI mods are game changers imo. They are very subtle you're right but man I couldn't play without them on again. :p

Claymore far outclasses the Black Knight Sword, the sheer stat requirements alone take a lot of health and stamina away from you. Go with the Claymore and upgrade it to +10 to keep it going, and then when you reach Anor Londo turn it Lightning.

That way you can save the wasted strength/dexterity points, and get a more damaging sword with a much much better moveset.

Started a few days ago, and after a frustrating start, I am really getting in to it. Would have been nice to have a bit more explanation of the mechanics of the game early on tbh.

I just had my first invader...was standing in the side bit by the stairs on the bridge where the red dragon guards(I think that is enough of a description!) and some guy appeared and kicked me out in to the fire just as the dragon was attacking:mad:

So far, I have just gone through Undead Burg, past the dragon and in to the Undead Parish. Got the Drake Sword(which is helping!!!), killed Havel The Rock(apparently that is his name), killed that boar and Taurus Demon. I am at Firelink Shrine atm after using the shortcut from Undead Parish(was glad to see that!). Any recommendations on where to go/what to do next?

PS. I did venture in to (I think) Darkroot Basin, and killed some crystal Golem type things but was killed by some kind of water bursts I think, so thought I would leave that and try again later;)

That's brilliant for a first run!

Well the next thing you need to do, is go to the bridge with the dragon, lure it down and run under it's legs into the room below it and go right into the gardens (or else the Dragon will fry you). Then when it perches back on top of the Castle it'll fly off if you're underneath it and you'll be free to loot the corpses on the bridge and grab the Claymore. This'll be the weapon you'll stick with trust me, it's moveset + damage is amazing.

Strength and Dexterity characters are completely pointless in my opinion. Why spend 50 levels getting them to a point where the weapon you use starts to do more damage than a Lightning or Fire variant which requires the minimum stats to equip the weapons and do huge damage. That's 50 points of health/stamina/attunement slots, for barely any extra damage. I've ran them all, str/dex etc and the damage outputs are all within the same brackets.

Choose a weapon for it's moveset and nothing else, turn it elemental and put the saved points to better use elsewhere. That's my opinion anyway, you can argue that elemental weapons are weak vs elemental creatures, but they are also strong against defensive creatures whereas pure physical, scaled dex/str weapons are weak against defensive creatures, so it all evens out.

Str/dex chars are just massively gimped compared to everyone else, which tbh is something they desperately need to fix in Dark Souls 2. A character with 50 strength should do 2-3x the damage that a character with an elemental weapon does. They give up the HP/stamina/attunement for it afterall.

I can see where you're coming from, and I would perhaps agree if you were just planning on doing NG and maybe NG+. My problem with elemental weapons is that their damage is capped, no matter what you do stat wise, plus they can't be buffed. That is a huge point for me, considering how most bosses are weak to the various weapon buffs you can use, and if you're going through multiple playthroughs and continue to improve your Int/Faith and increasing the damage output of the weapon buff you use, it will very quickly start to overpower the elemental weapons, by quite some distance in the end.

Of course, if you just stuck with the base Str/Dex you need for your favourite weapon and then turned it elemental, you could put those points into Int AND Faith and turn yourself into a walking magical weapon. That's also fun! :D

Edit: Just ran some basic numbers quickly....

My current favourite weapon is the Great Scythe, and with full stamina (192 Stamina), I can get 7 swings out of it before I run out of stamina. At +15 and 40 Dex, it hits for 476 damage. A +5 Lightning Great Scythe will hit for 500 damage. With 7 swings each, a +15 Great Scythe can theoretically output 3332 damage (476*7), while a +5 Lightning can output 3500 damage. So even with 40 Dex, it still doesn't hit harder than the elemental version.

Here's where it gets interesting though. As I'm a Dex/Faith build, I have 40 Dex and the Sunlight Blade miracle. With 40 Dex and the Canvas Talisman, I have a magic adjustment of 190. Using the Sunlight Blade miracle, which is Lightning damage, I can add an extra 342 damage per swing to my weapon (Magic adjustment of 190 * Miracle Adjustment of 1.8). With a +15 Great Scythe and the Sunlight Blade miracle, I can output a total of 5762 damage with a full stamina combo (818*7). That's over 2000 extra damage in a full combo.

Of course, those numbers don't take any damage resistances into effect, but it does illustrate the limitations of elemental weapons when compared to high level buffed variants.

I did forget about buffs for a moment there, they can obviously make a scaled build outdamage an elemental but there is still the case of you losing out on stamina and health, although that only applies if you play PvP, if you are going PvE then of course the scaled weapons will win every time. I do remember running a longsword build with 40 strength and dex, tons of buffing spells and resins and no HP with a ton of endurance, it was a lot of fun in PvP because the moveset is so damn good that you can stun lock anyone for 9+ hits which is guaranteed death for all but a few. The only downside though was that there were many cases where the lag would lie about where the opponent was and they'd hit me after I missed and do damage to me, and at 15 health or something around that level you'd never survive at SL125 pvp, it was a case of you win very well or die horribly and I hate leaving my fate in the hands of lag or a single mistake, it's nice to be able to come back and still win after taking a ton of damage.

Of course when it comes to PvE it's fine, as when you start to get to SL150+ invasions are rare and you can run whatever build you like. I don't think anything beats a +15 longsword or claymore on a very high SL char. I still stick with the theory that moveset means more than anything else.

Yeah, most of my experience is from PvE as I find the lag destroys a lot of the fun in PvP (except when I had a SL120 build with Dark Bead, that was fun :D). Never been a big fan of the Claymore as I'm generally not a fan of slower weapons, but I do like the Longsword, it has a nice range of attacks. I like the Great Scythe for the same reason, as it has some nice long overhead attacks that have great range, and a lovely wide swinging attack that can hit enemies even if they move to the side of you. Very handy in a crowd, or if someone is trying to circle behind you in PvP for a backstab. I like the Gargoyle's Halberd for the same reasons :)

It definitely does, the game would be damn near tournament quality if it wasn't for the lag and the fact it's impossible to pair up with specific people. Thank god that Dark Souls 2 is going dedicated again like Demon's. I tip my hat off to you for being able to use lots of weapons, I'm pretty much useless unless I have a Claymore/Zweihander/Longsword. Have you ever used the Balder 'Swag' Sword as people call it :p? That's another amazing weapon, it's moveset is similar to a Longsword and it's scaling ranks are through the roof! Looks kinda fragile though.

Different weapons for different situations, definitely viable, makes you very versatile. Powerful 2 hander for the bosses and open areas, tidy 1 hander for tight interiors, makes the game a breeze :p. Plus there is just something really appealing about carring a sword + shield paired with a two hander, been doing it in every RPG since I played Dungeon Siege 3 :D.

The Demon's Great Axe is a complete monster, best strength scaling in the game isn't it? It's awesome in PvP too because you can face away from them and use the heavy two handed attack which is some overhead slam, they go in for a backstab and if you hold your movement stick towards them you spin around after the charge up and slam them, it's absolutely horrid! :p

Yep, S scaling when over +10 I believe. I use it quite a lot now along with a Gargoyle Halberd +5 lightning when I'm fighting in corridors. I'm having a lot of fun with the Abyss Greatsword as well with 10 humanity.

Have never tried to Abyss Greatsword, the stat requirements are nuts!

Tried the Moonlight Butterfly again... And lasted maybe a second longer this time! By far the most trouble I have had so far. I did find the summon sign for th witch(hidden away or what!), but need to work out a proper strategy fro the fight. I carried on through Darkroot Gardens and found myself in Darkroot Basin again, but once again didn't think I could take on that things that shoots the water bursts. I wandered around in the dark fro a bit, then I followed a path down and found a bonfire after barely fighting off some kind of black knight(?) and found myself in the Valley of Drakes, where I killed a few, but got swamped soon after, so atm I am regrouping at the bonfire, where I will decide where to go next.

Desperately need humanity as well!

A Drake is much, much harder to beat than a Moonlight Butterfly mate, the Butterfly is easy as hell, just roll under it's beam and homing soulmass attacks, and if your reflexes aren't quite good enough to avoid the pin missile attacks, just equip the 'Cracked Round Shield' (yep, that crude little wooden round shield that's almost broken in half) and block, it has massive Magic resistance somehow.

EDIT: scratch that, it only has 55% resistance but it's better against magic than anything else early on bar the Crest Shield from revisiting the Asylum.
