Dashcams and license plate recognition

I have just to cover myself. It makes you immune to "crash for cash" kind of scams. Also to leave it on motion detect while parked.

How many non fault accidents have you been involved in?

Fortunately I haven't been involved in an accident as a drivers so far - long may it continue.

I've had several close calls through no fault of my own however - there are unfortunately too many people who drive or cycle like planks.

I have also found it useful to review my own driving from dashcam footage with the input of more experienced drivers to increase my own safety as a driver.

Half an hour watching the (often bizarrely entertaining) dashcam compilations on YouTube will show you why dashcams owners have the stereotypes of being planks.

It's obviously a completely skewed perspective but you can't help wondering about the sheer volume of the clips that show the camera owners borderline deliberately having completely avoidable accidents because "It's on dash camera mate, it was my right of way", rather than just accepting some people drive like pricks and it's probably easier to just let them cut you up at the roundabout and forget about it.

That wouldn't surprise me, I've seen it with cyclists on YouTube - chasing after cars to record them because they felt they didn't give them enough room.

'It doesn't look like this person is slowing down for the mini roundabout, hmm do I...?

A. Slow down and anticipate the danger.
B. Speed up and hook right as fast as I can because this will look great on the latest dashcam compilation on youtube.

B it is.'

Why is that relevant? How many crashes do people have in their life?

It only needs to happen once...

It's relevant because it helps is understand the likeliness of the risk you are attempting to mitigate.

Do you mitigate other risks that are so unlikely and have such low consequences by spending hundreds of quid or is it just this one?

Well, I pay for house insurance in case the place burns down. Does that count?

I'd imagine your house burning down would cost you a bit more than having to pay your excess and losing your no claims bonus in the event you couldn't prove you weren't at fault in an accident?

I don't think you've thought this through.

There are all kinds of possible accidents though - in some cases it could be serious enough prosecution is involved and you definitely want all the evidence possible on your side.

So now we're in the realms of not only being in a non-fault accident that is being contested, we're also being prosecuted for it? I reckon i'd be more likely to win the lottery :p

You have to weigh both the consequences and the chance.

At least on the roads I drive sadly the chances are much higher than winning the lottery - for instance the number of times I come across cyclists in poor lighting conditions who don't bother with properly working lights (sometimes not even lights at all) and wearing all dark clothing is crazy - I could literally post a video on a weekly basis - often getting far too close to comfort to them under the circumstances - usually not because of any lapse on my part though occasionally I could have done better in review - but if they'd just worn a bit of high-vis, etc. it would never have been close even. If I had hit one though it almost certainly would have been entirely on me without evidence otherwise.

EDIT: Though unfortunately my dashcam does low light enhancement so the footage often doesn't reflect well just how poorly they were visible compared to the reality.

In fairness though, unless they did something completely mental, i'd have thought that dashcam or otherwise, a cyclist not being very visible is unlikely to resolve you from blame if you hit one?

Edit - if anything, if your dashcam is showing improved visibility, it would only have the opposite effect and make it look like you hit a clearly visible cyclist? :p
