Dashcams and license plate recognition

In fairness though, unless they did something completely mental, i'd have thought that dashcam or otherwise, a cyclist not being very visible is unlikely to resolve you from blame if you hit one?

Might not resolve you of blame depending on circumstances but it can make a difference - hitting a cyclist tends to be very much a one way street for a driver without any supporting evidence.

Edit - if anything, if your dashcam is showing improved visibility, it would only have the opposite effect and make it look like you hit a clearly visible cyclist?

Unfortunately yes - I had one awhile back where the dashcam footage the sky looks blue (in reality it was dark) and the cyclist is visible albeit not clear whereas in person you could literally only see the white of their socks until the headlights were on them and being a hill the headlights were off angle and only caught them late.

The guy went through very obvious red lights at full pelt lol

There are so many things wrong with that video - though the video quality is a bit poor to tell for sure looks like he stopped peddling when the lights went red so possibly he was braking to little effect on the wet surface and aquaplaned past the lights - but then his approach to the junction was poor in every regard never mind with the consideration of stopping a cycle on a wet road which can often be... protracted... which should result in even more care taken than normal.

EDIT: From reading the comments seems there is more footage that was on TV? which shows he was still peddling though some claim he was trying to reverse peddle to slow down :s still the approach is all wrong regardless.

Reverse pedal to slow down?
Can't do that unless a bike has a fixed wheel I don't think
Ie not geared though that's probably the wrong term

I don't know anything about it but there is talk in the comments it is a courier with a fixed wheel bike with only one brake.

Looking at video, if he didn't know junction (and wasn't being cautious), it looks like you could think light belonged to the pelican crossing, which they preceeded, and not both those ,and, the later oblique junction, so, he failed to stop in wet(or ran) pelican, and was then, surprised with traffic from left.
Bus driver didn't exactly have fast reactions, stopping after collision, wonder if the bike front wheel took most of the force, since he managed to walk away,
there is a lesson in, not bailing, too.

But any red light facing your direction means stop. Why is it so hard :p

You wouldnt even feel someone hitting the side of a bus like that. The driver wouldnt notice unless he happened to look in the mirror just at the right time.

I have dashcam on the front and back of my car, I think they are only 2k for the front and 1080p at the back. The quality is good enough to identify the car and if I get into an accident, I would think that means the car is close enough to begin with or he wouldn’t have hit me. If there is injury then the police will be involved. I mean I’d take pre-caution, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Sure you can take it to numberplate recognition, but why not hire 2 more cars front and back with body guards as well to act as both accident buffer and witnesses?

How far are you willing to go?

I think dashcams make some drivers worse.

they are often out there to "catch" bad driving by putting themselves in danger just to scream "I'vE gOt iT on ViDeo!!!!!!!!!!"

the number of absolute plums in those dashcam compilation videos is unreal. 99% of those close calls could be avoided but the dashcam warrior feels the need to make it a close call just to show the youtube world how bad the particular driver is.

all a bit of a joke to be fair.

if they worked how intended where people used them in case of a scam, crash etc fair enough but it just ends up being constant "it is going on youtube" BS.

I can't watch the UK dashcam compilation videos. They are cringeworthy.

The Russian / Eastern European ones, however, are far more entertaining.
I love watching the UK ones...it's like watching a soap I guess, it's trash but you just can't help watching it (mind you I refuse to watch soaps). Eastern Europe and Russian ones are amazing / scary, North America ones are pretty good. Usually a fairly safe balance between the Russian craziness and the UK cringe. :D

Same here! The UK ones are full of people accelerating themselves into situations to get onto a YouTube compilation.

Exactly this. I always try and give Dashcammers a wide berth on the road as I know many are looking to be YouTube stars.

um you mean the one going up the hill , where you ... went for it , concerned with following car rear ending.

I've yet to see dashcam coverage , which has good night time resolution/definition, versus human vision,
indeed, can that be proven objectively, if you have the lenses and sensor specification; it's one of the reasons I don't think its worth getting one.

Infra-red night vision assistance excepted eg 508 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi5ElLoRBmw
