Dashcams. Who uses them?

Saw all this dash cam discussion so I thought I'd mount my Canon EOS M on my tripod and try it out on a car journey today. Really impressed with footage straight from the camera.

Made it into a quick time-lapse also :)

I'm thinking about making a Raspberry Pi dash cam soon too, so I'll update about that in due course.

OK so time to bolt the stable door......

My A4 s line I picked up on the 7th this month was rear ended (not too badly) by some idiot trying to squeeze the wife, as her dual carriageway became a single lane (he was on the painted chevrons at time) my forward facing nextbase caught nothing but a slight sideways impact. So now I want a rear one, may get that 806 most of you use for forward facing, then put my nextbase into rear.

I see two sellers on the forest but both ship from China. Is this my only option, as I don't want to get scammed with some cheap plastic tack.

Rear ends are fairly straightforward though no? How would the camera have helped - has he denied knowledge of the accident or something?

If he was in the closing lane he can claim all he wants, the facts will speak for themselves and he'll get nowhere?

"I was in the closing lane, attempting to merge sensibly and Mrs hlxbravo moved across/slowed down/sped up/other inventive nonsense and caused a collision with the front quarter of my car'

Sounds like a lovely protracted argument to me, especially if it's someone prepared to stubbornly lie in the face of reason.

Case closed :p

The only thing that would have made it the OP's fault was if they had driven into the closing lane - which lets face it is enormously unlikely and everyone knows that, including the insurers.

Personal family experience would suggest that as much as you would think it's as simple as that, once people start the inventive lying, it can really drag out.

My mum had someone argue that she'd pulled out from behind her, driven on the wrong side of the road onto a roundabout and cut her up, hence her driving into the side of her car. In actual fact she'd come from the opposite side of the roundabout. A year that took to sort out, even with CCTV evidence showing the car coming from the other side of the roundabout.

I've had two accidents (both not at fault) while having a camera installed, and while the police and insurance case handler were very excited to hear this, no one actually requested to see the footage dispite the fact one of the accidents was heavily disputed and dragged out for nearly a year. I sent the video via email, gave them YouTube links, but no one ever used the evidence which would have solved it instantly.

I don't have one installed currently.. but I'm currently doing over 150 miles per day so might stick it back on.

I was told that it had to be the original files on DVD or USB or SD, with DVD preferred. Two reasons: if it's not the original files then the evidence could have been tampered with, and Youtube and hotlinks in emails are often blocked - indeed a hotlink in an email may cause the email itself to be blocked.

I used these guys to get mine from the UK

cardashcamshop.co.uk

Not sure if they have the 0806 though.

Even dropbox and google drive links to the original files?

How is that any different from burning the file to DVD an posting it?

If they're not blocked the time taken to download the files can be significant. The incident I sent to them was 1.5 GB, and if they have it right there on a DVD, it's much more convenient for them.

A friend of mine was recently involved in an accident on the motorway where some plank in a Range Rover side-swiped him, destroying the front offside of my friend's car. Since the RR driver's story didn't match up with what actually happened, the claim went 50/50.

The most annoying part of that story is that my friend had recently bought a dash cam and not gotten around to fitting it yet...

Yes when providing video evidence, always send it on physical media. Memory sticks and DVD-Rs for example are so meaninglessly inexpensive that you may as well send it on both to make doubly sure that it can be viewed by pretty much any computer :p

Ahh right, I suppose that makes sense! I sometimes forget not everywhere has superfast internet, plus they then need to take into account storage of the data on what are probably cheapo customer service PCs with small hard drives.

To be fair I rear ended someone in my Mini (going back about 10 years ago) and it was more their fault than mine. They were in a hire car going down a steep hill and we were both almost stationary behind a bin lorry before. He overtook and I followed but he slammed on his breaks because he was unsure of the width of his car and there was an oncoming car. There was plenty of room but anyway a Mini + downhill + surface water meant that even though I was pulling off at little over 10mph I went into the back of him... quite gently I might add.

I smashed up my rack of front lights pretty bad and he had a tiny scratch. Being a hire car they tried to invoice me for a ridiculous amount (£600 I think) and I rejected/complained. They eventually dropped it.

Regardless of rear ends I find most idiots are behind, be it tail gating, road rage etc, and it's the first 'part' of what the front cam then shows.

In other news, Kia garage (jn for a service tomorrow so thought I'd ask) quoted £220 to fit them both so that's a NO!. Who should I get in touch with locally to fit two? Independent car garage?
