Dashcams. Who uses them?

I want to get two of these but I don't know much about them.

Are they a pain to install / require holes in bodywork or anything? Do they constantly need a change of battery etc?

Kinda like the security but don't feel it's worth it for a lot of hassle.

I was thinking about getting a dashcam at some point. The quality is sufficiently good enough, it will record should anyone hit my car and may be good a providing impartial evidence should I ever need it. There are many arguments made along the lines of "Well, I've been driving X years but never needed it" etc but you can make those arguments against almost every piece of technology man has ever invented.

80% of the most enjoyed features on mobile phones wouldn't be around today with that attitude. Neither would half the features on cars/everything in life.

iDrive? Pffft, would never need that.
An alarm? Pffft, no one has ever tried to steal my car before.
Comphensive car insurance/Travel/house insurance?? Meh, why bother, haven't needed it so far. Just be more careful.
Xenon lights? Ha, just spend some more money on better glasses, blindy.
House alarm? Not needed, just get better locks.

There is always a counter argument as to why you wouldn't need something, but the truth is that high quality, smart dash cams can be fitted without any unsightly wires for a ~£120 and when we're talking this in the context of cars, it works out very good value for money and they may pay you dividends one day. Just for info, on a New BMW 3 Series £120 get's you...

- 1/3 of a CD Changer.
- 1/4 of a bluetooth system
- 1/8 of a sunroof
- Half your car with tinted windows
- Not even a single folding wing mirror
- "Extended storage"....for another £35 on top
- An armrest with sliding function....for another £25 on top.

So as you can see, a one off cost EVER of £120 for a fully integrated camera, with GPS, that watches your car when you're not with it, that might capture some funny/shocking/interesting/wallet saving or potentially evidential footage, really isn't that bad.

The other hazard of using a dashcam is you become a dashcam ******. You download all the footage and the upload some onto youtube and add to the copious amount of dashcam ******y on youtube.

so long as they save up the footage and release 5-15min compilations of original footage! ;)

fed up of seeing compilations all using the same bloomin' clips!

but then again... maybe it's good that there are fewer, new clips... means there are less accidents/morons surely? :p

I have an 0801 camera. Round here there was a spate of 'crash for cash' accidents a year or so ago. I don't have the optional GPS module. The big problem I have is that my Skoda doesn't switch off the 12v supply so I can't leave the camera permanently plugged in. Otherwise I'd have two.

Haha, Karma for that van driver. Love it :p
Not only that what about the idiot in the Volvo :D.

I once had an argument with a Russian woman, it had been snowing and the silly bint raced out in front of me and proceeded to spin her car perpendicular to the road holding me up for 15 minutes whilst she faffed on.

When I confronted her things got a bit heated, I asked what gear she was using and was told that she'd learnt to drive in Russia so knew what she was doing, naturally I was totally reassured.
