Dashcams!

Arc900 on a wet night now that my windscreen has been properly cleaned:

Very impressed, this is in the 4K HDR mode, not the Super Night mode which does not support HDR. The night mode is pretty crap, has a brighter image but you lose all detail in exposed highlights like bright headlight on numberplates etc, HDR sorts that and is just outright better as you get 4K. Super Night mode is below 4K only as is the 60fps mode.

Note the level of detail, can see guy on my left scrolling is social media :p

I've got a front dashcam on order, it shoots up to 1080p. When it came to selecting a MicroSDXC card it was such a minefield, the online user manual recommends a high endurance card designed for dashcam use. I looked at some which were relatively expensive and/or out of stock.

When I read reviews even the more expensive endurance ones had some negative reviews. I read that an MicroSDXC card is a consumable and may last 6-12 months in a dashcam, I presume that is for normal ones not designed specifically for dashcam use.

In the end I went for a normal Integral 512GB one for £38.29. In the reviews people are using these in dashcams. I figured since it has a large capacity and will record up to 48 hours it won't be overwriting data a lot seeing as I only drive once a week for an hour.

Its a risk I'm prepared to take and will follow Garmins recommendation of formatting the SD card at least once every 6 months to look after it.

Annoyingly the older general purpose SD cards are often the same spec in terms of write lifespan as the new "endurance" ones and newer general purpose SD cards are often quite a lot lower write spec than older ones. I use older Kingston Canvas Select ones in my dashcams and they last just as long as the newer endurance ones designed for dashcams and far longer than the latest general purpose ones.

Well I managed to find a SanDisk Max Endurance 128GB microSDXC at the rainforest for £35.99 which is in stock and will arrive at the same time as the dashcam. So I cancelled my original order in favour of this one. Could have ordered a SanDisk High Endurance 256GB microSDXC for £39.39 but delivery expected around 24th February and from a 3rd party seller.

The SanDisk Max Endurance boasts 60,000 Hours Endurance and a 128GB card will store 16.9 hours of 1080p30 HDR video. That's enough for me.

Well they've been dispatched...

Think I'm allowed to post this here as ocUK don't sell dash cams or endurance microSDXC cards. Ordered both from Amazon themselves as I wouldn't want to risk getting a fake card at too good a price from a third party seller. I could have also bought the dash cam a bit cheaper from a third party seller but preferred ordering from Amazon themselves.

I don't really like ordering fairly expensive stuff from third party sellers. Unless its absolutely necessary.

I bought the Lexar Silver 512Gb for our dashcam (4k front & rear, so I needed the capacity), back in July for £49.99.
It's still going strong, but I've just seen it's doubled in price (£94.99!) if/when I need to replace it.

I haven't had one totally die - I've a couple of times caught that they are having issues and swapped them out before that point though. So far I've got like 2-3 years out of cheaper older Kingston SD cards with fairly heavy usage over that time.

Nope, I've got two 256GB Sandisk Endurance cards for my dashcam, one of them is a good 4 years old. Both are fine.

If you're using standard cards then expect them to fail.
