Dashcams!

I've noticed with mine that the date and time were wrong when I made the recording above. According to Garmin support you need to charge the camera overnight at least once per month to maintain the supercapacitors clock...

https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Q4Z7UoHbmR9DZpkhHPkSSA

Thought it was going to be a hassle pulling it off the windscreen, but it quite easily pops out of its holder which is stuck to the screen. Then when I plugged into into my charger noticed the camera wanted to record all the time so I had to remove the microSDXC card to stop it.

I'll leave it on charge overnight tonight and hopefully that will solve the date/time issue.

Thanks, any chance you could provide some feedback once you have installed it, looking for real world on night time use etc.
Also are you going to use parking mode or just when driving ?
Thanks
Just received it via the post today and looking to try and fit it later on this week. I'll be using it for driving only e.g. not hard wired.

Anyone tried the 70mai A810S? Some of the cameras on market are quite chunky. I have a 622GW so a nice size, but obviously things have progressed with night quality and STARVIS2 optics.
did you get one in the end?
spotted a nice deal on it and thinking if i should get one too (£92 delivered for the front cam + CPL filter)

Finally got around to fitting my dashcam today (Miofive S1), and the seemingly incredibly useful usb-c port above the rear view mirror doesn’t deliver enough power to the dashcam…seems to be a common issue grrr

So options are, run a long cable and try and hide it; pay someone to do it properly; buy a £5.99 step down transformer that’s pre attached to a usb-c port that I attach to the wiring loom hidden in the housing above the rear view mirror

Anyone done the last option? I suppose I could always junk the cam and try and buy a less power hungry one

God knows why they deliberately choose to underpower the port. Who on earth is going to plug a phone in up there?
Just got mine fitted for £80…if I’d have done it myself I would have probably spent more on new interior trim parts

Yeah cost me £84 to have mine fitted. I'm well pleased that the one time use only, sticky pad is stuck firmly on the screen. It ain't coming off unless I want it to. It remains stuck even under the pressure of pulling the camera off its mount.

Didn't realise I'd have to remove the camera from the car and charge it overnight at least once a month, until I discovered about the supercapacitor which maintains the time/date. Hooked up my MacBook to it the other day while it was in the car and connected a 2M USB-C to USB-C data cable to it, to transfer some footage off the camera.

I discovered that it saves the footage in 1 minute pieces so once I had them on my MacBook I transferred them to my Windows PC and used Microsoft Clipchamp to join them all up. That took awhile but it takes ages to export them in the car with the engine on to my iPhone so its better this way.

Only took about 10 minutes to transfer from the camera to MacBook, about 7GB of data if I recall. Exporting a file that large would have taken about 55 minutes to transfer over WiFi to iPhone.

V useful. Thanks

yes it'll be installed in a tesla. why? because the HW3 cameras are low resolution and also the clips are limited to the last 10 mins unless saved specifically, due to EU data regs
better to have a dashcam in this case.
my old dash cam is also from 2018 so it's due an upgrade lol

One thing I've noticed this morning is that now that I've left the camera to charge overnight it keeps the correct date, however it didn't automatically move the clocks forward. So I will have to connect it to the Garmin app on my phone before my next drive to correct that.

What do you think of the angle of my camera? Am I showing too much bonnet or just about right?

looks fine to me, if you did raise the height to reduce bonnet visibility you dont gain that much - only increased skyline.
I think having bonnet visible shows if anything actually hits etc, gives more of a depth guage - in my opinion anyway.

its perfect
if you raise it up, there be too much "light" hitting the lens, and camera will over compensate

also having more bonnet is better for depth perception and i think if someone was to ho hit your car, having that much bonnet is better than none at all

Out of curiosity whats the current recomendation for a front/rear dash cam with a budget of up to £300?

Would like small, discrete. Must be reliable (it's got one job - be recording if something happens) with a decent app for viewing/downloading footage.

To fit an EV6. Not sure about the fitcamx - they seem to be easy to fit but poor quality sensor and not that reliable.

Hi can you let me know where you read the fitcamx isnt reliable. I was thinking of getting one.

Edit. Ahh found some reviews. Seems they stop recording but dont warn you. Although they do release software updates.

Just found that Viofo released a new app late last year and it allows OTA Firmware updates to the camera now (using your mobile phone), so no more removing SD card, copying BIN file and then reinserting card.

Now rocking the newest Firmware on my A229 Pro which has the GeoFencing update. Means you can set upto 3x Zones where it won't turn on Parking Mode. It uses GPS and you can set it to a 0m, 15m, 30m, 50m or 100m ranges. So I have set up my Home and Work (15 m range) as both of these have better CCTV covering the car already so no need for Parking mode yet it will turn Parking mode on when I go anywhere else e.g. supermarket

I had a FitCamX on my M340i Touring for 3 years. Worked flawlessly with no issues.

I've now got one on my Taycan GTS, had the car since August last year and fitted the FitCamX about a month later. Again, working perfectly well. I've fitted an adjustable polarizing filter to it as it was picking up reflections of the top of the dash where the grille for the Sport Chrono clock is, the filter makes the reflection magically disappear. I did consider having my OPC fit the Porsche Dashcam system but it's an ugly looking bit of kit whereas the FitCamX is very unobtrusive and looks more OEM than the Porsche one!

Only thing I'd say that annoys me slightly is depending on which type of charging you use at home, you may find the camera might randomly record footage when it's parked up and connected to your charger.

Reason being, if you are on any kind of intelligent charging tariff which 'wakes up' your car several times during the early evening/overnight in order to charge when the grid has a surplus, the camera also wakes up and records. I've got quite a bit of footage of my garage door :p

Then when the EV goes back to sleep the recording stops. I don't believe this happens exclusively with the FitCamX, it's likely to happen with any EV/Dashcam combination if your on an intelligent tariff and your camera is wired to the car.

My father passed away last week. This is me on my way to the house to meet with the funeral director to discuss the funeral arrangements. See if you can spot what almost went wrong
