Dawn of War 3?

25% off this on Steam at the moment. What do you "veterans" think who've played it for a while? Worth it?

I managed to finally give it a whirl in the past week or so, it is a solid 7/10 from me so far, if they add content it could be a 8.5/10.

I like what they have done to the mechanic of the game, it does not play like a MOBA at all. I used to play Heroes Of the Storm (got bored) and this is nothing like that game or L.O.L, I find the comparisons bizarre.

upsides

I have no problem with the structure of the game and the battles can be pretty epic. I think Relic went for 40k 'EPIC' style battles from the tabletop rather than the standard non-epic 40k games which I feel was more in line with DOW2
The army painter is cool
I like the ability to add or remove specific traits from your army and your heroes
The 'power core' mechanic is nowhere near as bad as people have made out
There is a proper come back mechanic in the game which allows you to turn the tide
I don't have a problem with the art-style and it is nice to see so many different types of minor-factions covered
The game feels balanced

The down-sides

It was too expensive at launch for the content that it offered
The battles are so balanced that they can take over an hour to resolve, not the best game if you fancy a quickie
The maps are un-inspired, it really needs some better maps
It feels like the game was rushed from a content perspective, Chaos needed to be in the game from the start and I feel plenty of paid-DLC coming on :)
Too many paid-DLC will fracture match making too much

If Relic announced a road-map of DLC content which adds better maps, Imp. Guards, Chaos, 'Nids, Necrons and Tau I think this could go from being a 'decent' game into something great. I have a bad feeling however that as well as charging a big entry fee they will be wanting big bucks for the DLC. I hope I am proved wrong.

The campaign is a disappointment but I think that boat has sailed now and I can't see Relic going back to fix it.

If you are on the fence I would ignore the negative PR, much of it is from the previous players of the game and try it for yourself. You might find yourself as one of the converted.....or not :)

The problem you have is that the core market for this game was the exact people who bought the previous games. Sadly however, Relic ignored them and decided to create a very different beast.

What they should have done is more of the same with a great campaign with say four different factions (For me its Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Chaos and Eldar) to choose from with their own stories, weapons and armour drops etc.

They should also have engineered it so that units such as a ten man squad of Imperial Guard soldiers could, over the course of a level, increase in effectiveness. Much like C&C Generals did, the more they fight and the more they kill, the better they become and the more effective they become on the battlefield. You should also have been able to upgrade them more mid game with more diverse weapons. That way, you feel much more connected with the units you create rather than using them simply as cannon fodder whilst your overpowered cartoon hero bounds around the map like a squirrel on crack.

The graphics i dont have a problem with but i am sick to death of games being churned out and being too heavily focused on PVP rather the epic campaigns of old.

Downloaded this for the free weekend and have to say it's performance has massively improved. On release it struggled in a big way even at medium type settings whereas now ultrawide on maximum I can get 30-50fps.

Gameplay seems a bit better, I do miss the cover technique but overall it doesn't seem as bad, probably going to purchase it again.
