Dawn of War II Beta Thread

The new RACE is ok, although nothing like what they should be. Tyranid are a horde race which should be overwhelming you in numbers. They are much better suited to DOW than DOW2. Plus they missed out the Genestealers?
 
This thread confuses me, i dont understand why people care that you can no longer build base buildings.. what did they do that i obviously didn't get other than build your units?

1 building or 5 buildings it makes no difference if they build the same things

Same thing with the squad sizes, in the total war games you can raise or lower the size of your armies, but it has no actual effect on the game, your units still die just as quickly, it just gets more messy

Ps. add me to gfwl i also love the assault marines they are just brutal

You missed the point my friend. Many people don't just play games for the actual game. I'm sure many ,like me enjoy the spectacle and the story and the games abaility to draw you into a story or other universe.
 
Considering the performance people are getting currently I am quite happy with the number of things going on on-screen. Theres enough people out there that the game keeps telling me have their settings too high..

Also, the scale isnt that bad. You have a proper battle in it and it easily fills the screen. Had some really good battles where 4 teams have converged and just had a massive battle.

Of course if you are losing your units and only ever have about 3 squads then you probably will think wtf are all my troops. But I play as Orks and usually have 6 squads. GREENSKINS!
 
The one thing I dont like at the moment is the map design. It almost encourages individual battles during 3 v 3 matches, with each player trying to hold their own 'sector', instead of collaborating on a mutual front line.

Agreed. Maybe the other maps with the retail package will be better. The team map in the desert is slightly better at funnelling players but it can also easily remain as three separate 1v1's going on at the same time. There's slightly more overlap on that map than the jungle one (something plateau - can't remember the name) but it would still be nice to be fighting collaboratively more.

Dont get me wrong for a purely visual point i agree with you more units = more epic battles , im just saying for a gameplay standpoint having larger armies would make them harder to control, make it harder to tell what the hell is going on and detract from their every unit is special approach to the game

I agree. I don't want it stupidly large but 3 men to a space marine squad is silly. They should have at least made it 5/6.
 
I don't think that squad size really matters tbh.

Bigger squads would need bigger maps, which would change a whole bunch of thinngs aswell. And we'd be back to dawn of war 1 tbh.

Can't wait to play this on the 28th!
 
Does anyone have any idea why when I try to log in to GFW Live it asks me for a product key?

Try the product key from DoW 2? The one it tells you to write down when you load it.

I say that but could be wrong as I wasn't asked for mine just a guess :D
 
After checking looking at my routers config page, i happen to notice a bit of an annoyance with dow2, it opens up a port using UPnP for GFWL yet does not bother to close it when the program is closed. Proberly wont cause an issue, but its bit of an annoyance that things like that happen as it means i have to close that upnp entry manualy each time.
 
So what are the unit caps for each race?

There is a global unit cap of 100. For e.g. a squad of 3 Terminators costs 24 population, a squad of 3 scouts costs 6(?) population by contrast, giving you 30 out of a possible 100 pop. Basically the more powerful the unit, the more pop it costs. You could in theory have 16 squads of scouts (if 6 pop is correct). Infantry and Vehicles use the same global cap. This severly limits the amount of units you can produce and 'forces' you to use them wisely. I think it works well, but it took me 30+ games to get into/adjust to. I is completely hooked now.

Ok I managed to find the key by looking in regedit.

I have an annoying problem though - all interface sounds are delayed by about half a second from the moment I roll over a button or click a unit. Solutions?
