DCS:- Black Shark 2

Let me get this straight , they sprung something on us last minute
which was basically getting people to pay twice for something
and people are quite rightly annoyed about it ....... and you think they should share less info ....................

Contgratulations on missing the point entirely and totally failing to understand my post.

Never meant to insinuate it didn't. And I don't have a 'crew', I've been an active part of many areas of the community and many VFWs going back a good while now.

I've seen many developers and titles come and go, and imho ED are the only people out there at the moment keeping the study sim genre alive. The actions of some people who seem to want ED to fail just because they don't agree with everything they do are misguided at best.

Oh dear God , dumb at best

NO ONE WANTS ED TO FAIL , we are trying to steer them in the right
direction so that they do not FAIL.... but it is really hard when retarded decisions like this are made.

I think many people would have seen it differently if there was a news post about it many moons beforehand which fully explained the change in circumstances, myself included.

Something along the lines of:

Due to a recent reassessment of our plans for the DCS series, we regret to inform you that future compatibility patches will become paid upgrades. However, we aim to also provide extra and enhanced content in these upgrades as an additional incentive to purchase and support our development team - securing a strong future for the DCS series.

We understand that you may have concerns about this new model, however we hope that this is temporary measure until we can find an alternative that is fairer for you the customer, and our development team.

The first title to utilise this new model will be DCS: Black Shark 2, which will bring the much anticipated online compatibly between the Ka-50 and our latest addition to the DCS hanger, the A-10C.

Using the new graphical capabilities that we introduced in DCS: Warthog, we have made the playable world a much more pleasing and hopefully immersive place to fly in, utilising new fire and smoke effects along with HDR.

As part of the extra content in this upgrade, we have reworked the Ka-50's cockpit with higher resolution textures and cockpit shadows. We have also added a new, much more realistic sound set to the Helicopter. For a full list of the extensive changes and bonus enhancements, check the log below.

Please note that as part of the upgrade an internet connection is required for LAN play. DCS: Black Shark 2 will be released on dd/mm with the 1.1.10 patch for A-10C to follow at a later date.

<<insert changelog here>>

You cannot deny that this release was very poorly handled. They didn't try to sell the upgrade at all. I get the impression it was simply dumped out there for people to buy without any marketing or proper testing (the borked installer for example). RPS hit the nail on the head.

How not to manage a sim franchise.

It hurts to watch them making life difficult for themselves.

Put yourself in ED position for a minute. In the past they have told the community what their plans were, and when their plans changed (eg planned release date slipping) elements of the community went mad much like they are now.

That is the nature of development though. Keeping people informed is generally a good idea, there will allways be people that complain about slippage and changes planned releases.

And again this time, ED had previously said that the PLAN was to release a free compatibility patch fo BS. When that plan changed and BS2 was release, again elements of community start throwing insults.

That is basically asking for trouble though, when they discovered it would have to be a paid upgrade they should have informed the community. If they fully detailed the reasoning why it would have to be paid, then the majority would accept that information. Yes you would still have a negative reaction, however I'd imagine it would have been much reduced to what you have at present.

And I'll say, while you and other have seen BS2 as a negative, I honestly don't think ED did. They saw what they did as a positive. When they decided they would have to charge for the upgrade, they elected to include additional features that were not originally planned (such as the EDM cockpit) in order to give more value for money. I'd argue that many other developers wouldn't do so.

I actually see BS2 as a positive, from the view it advances BS1. Oh there might be questions about whether it deserves to be Ver 2, and that it isnt really a new and improved BS, but on the whole if it improves the game its a positive. The negative comes from surprising people (in my view), also there are questions on how this release affects the overall development of the series.

To be honest, after the events of the past week I'd be suprised if ED release any information about their plans again, instead I suspect the first the public hear about a new project will be when it's released, or at least VERY close to release.

I personally think this would be a mistake, although if they hadn't of said there would be a free compatibility patch then much of this would have reduced. Generally its better to keep people informed.

You are aware ED are a company and not a person?

Thank-you kind sir! :D

It's all about how you treat your customers and how you sell your products to them after all. Word of mouth advertising is all that ED has really, and to screw some of your customers will negate some of the positive stuff people have said. I'm not angry or mad at ED, I'm just disappointed and disgruntled with how they managed this release. If I was writing a school report for them, the closing words would be:

Could do better. Must do better.

@Eddie, I think he was being metaphorical in the sense that that is the best way to express his thoughts. It's a good metaphor actually.

I bought DCS:A10 and loved the sim its self, but couldnt get on with the shoddy looking ground textures and ground mesh, looked like something from 2000, this needed a lot of work.

It's a matter of scale I suppose, it can't really compete with something like ARMA, for example, as the Map is huge compared to ARMAs. But that said, there is room for improvement, and there is a new terrain engine in the works, with Nevada as the first location to use it.

Nate is the blackshark printed manual still very relevant to BS2,is there many differences. ie still worth a buy.

cheers jay.

The operation of the aircraft and it's systems is still the same, so yes. However some gameplay specific sections (such as radio usage) will have changed.

Cheers Eddie I may treat myself was going to first time round but never did, on a side note loving the new performance and look e.t.c for me.
