I am upgrading right now I have my mind set on DDR3 not just for today but for the future in mind.

I will probably get 2GB because 4GB is too much at the moment
but would you get DDR2 now or DDR3?(bearing in mind the future the most)

Justify please!!

no its not worth it now if u not using nehalm cpu (they now out yet). they will be worth it 2009 q1 or end of 2008.

i wouldnt bother to be honest

todays ddr3 isnt going to be the same as the standard used in nehalem [going off rumours] anyway

Hi there

Nehalem uses current DDR3!

I have a setup here with the Cellshock Blue running at 2000MHz 9-8-8-16 and it scores over 19,000 in Everest. DDR2 can't come close to it and todays DDR3 is absolutely fine, well the decent stuff rated for 1600MHz and higher is. :)

i read an article [not sure if i can say where] saying that there is going to be a limit on ddr3 bandwidth

stand corrected though gibbo - i say the nehalem rig benches you posted though and they did look mighty fine!

4GB is to much what, money or memory?

I wouldn't say 4GB is to much memory, nowadays with Vista and games/programs eating up so much ram it's almost getting standard.

I wouldn't go back to 2GB ever. The OS is so much more responsive and stuff starts / stops so much faster. And if you get DDR2, it's not like it's slow memory ;)

as gibbo said nothing wrong with them but newer and better ram is coming out as gibbo uses cellshock i bet even later on we will se even tighter timings and lower prices. its not worth it now if u dont have nehalm and nearly no one does

No, its far to expensive IMO.

Nice to get all your general thoughts but it is this Nehalem that I would be looking to get eventually.

But the problem with this if I don't get a DDR3 board right now I will have to rip open my case and change the whole board to accommodate for this type of memory. I am sure there are a lot of people on here who wish to upgrade now wondering about all of this.

At the moment I am using the old PC2100 type memory and I am very sure even with low end DDR3 I would see a significant performance improvement.

But in theory the current ddr3 is compatable but pointless for the i7 chips as its triple channel so the triple channel kits would be worth waiting for instead of the duel channel out now? as you would need another stick to operate at optimum

The main problem you have is that i7 will use a completely different socket so unless you already have a DDR3 board running DDR3 memory and just want to add a bit more it is not worth it. You will have to upgrade to a new motherboard anyway when i7 comes out so might as well stick to DDR2 for now.

tbh, most people don't upgrade for a long time, (like me) so i'd go for ddr3 as it's the way forward and will last longer than ddr2. I mean how many people still use 768mb of ddr in their system(again, like me)?

Uhh no, the CPU is what gives the performance improvement. As long as you have DDR2 that can give the best from the CPU (run at sync with the FSB or above) then it'll perform optimally. Going above the FSB gives minor benefits in a few applications and little elsewhere, for games (what most of us on here do with the PC) it is pretty much pointless.

The argument of DDR3 being more future proof is not proven at all, does anyone remember how mega-fussy AMDs first integrated memory controller was about mismatched sticks (even if they were the same model)? Compatibility was a serious issue and I'm really not sure that it will be as simple as buying a third stick and pairing it with an existing dual channel kit (for Nehalem tri-channel).

DDR2 is cheaper and does the job, the argument for is proven. DDR3 it isn't. It is your money though so do what you want, maybe you'll be the one laughing in a year or two (but I doubt it, DDR3 will be cheaper then anyway).
