It's a 10/12 hour game be real.

Really wish I still had the game to take a picture of my 5 hours and 25 minutes save file of a cleared hardcore run.

and of course I took my time, I had 3 saves for the ENTIRE game, I'm hardly going to be running through guns blazing without a care in the world am I? Every crate got opened, every necromorph got looted and I went out of my way for nodes and logs.

Maybe I'm just not bad...

Excellent I will rent it again when the DLC is on offer in about a month. Pointless buying full price dlc these days it's always on offer fast.
 
Finished this on Sunday, but on chapter 13 I had to drop the difficulty from zealot as there was a part that was doing my head in.

Still got a save from just before I dropped it so may give it a go some time soon.

Would like a play through on normal. Don't know why I try the harder difficulties on games as it sometimes just does my head in to the point that I start to hate the game :(

I pick up just about all my DLC on offer these days as they come up so quickly and often.

This may sound a bit stupid, but I went through the entire game and I still have no idea what the relevance of the marker is with regards to the necromorphs. Anyone care to explain?

Probably should have read those few hundred logs I picked up :D

[POTENTIAL SPOILERS]

No one other than the writers truly know yet, that's kind of the point. The marker is still a mysterious creation, especially the 'black marker' that was discovered on earth but went missing hundreds of years before the events of Dead Space. The 'red markers' we see in the games are actually man made copies of it. I'm assuming the outbreak reoccurred on the sprawl because of the Ishimura being salvaged. It says in one of the logs that there was fleshy masses all over the Ishimura that 'became active' as they approached the red marker on the sprawl. So as it docked they likely came back to life and invaded the sprawl, which makes sense as it was docked relatively close to the civilian district where the game begins.

It turns out the black marker actually had properties that STOPPED the necromorphs from approaching, it effectively killed them from a huge radius. The red markers also apparently give off this 'field' too but to a much, much smaller extent. The red marker on the planet in Dead Space 1 had its 'field' amplified by the platform it was placed on (this is outlined in a graphic novel), hence why the hive mind and necromorphs became inactive the moment you put the marker onto the platform. I can only assume that there were necromorphs 'trapped' on the planet in Dead Space 1, dormant due to the red marker on its plinth. The moment the unitologists on the Ishimura moved it, they came back to life. The question remains though, how did they get there? Why were they there? Did humans hundreds of years before hand copy the black marker to create the red marker from DS1, then use the code on it to create the necromorphs? Then realizing their mistake they built the plinth to trap them, dormant on that planet perhaps?

One thing that puzzles me is, the writing on the marker is apparently the genetic code for the virus that causes the necromorph infection, yet the black marker, the original, was clearly designed to repel them. Perhaps the necromorphs were originally an intergalactic biological weapon, used by a very advanced race before the existance of man. The black marker allowed them to create necromorphs, but in turn protected them from their creation.

Dunno, lots to it, lots of back story in graphic novels and films based in the Dead Space universe.

That bit in bold was the bit that was confusing me from playing it - if it is supposed to repel them, what the hell is the end about? :D

I think some kind of imperfection occurs in the copying. Perhaps the 'making us whole' concept of Isaac dying would complete the red marker, making it repel the necromorphs effectively without a plinth like the one in DS1. Perhaps they rushed there to try and stop Isaac from getting there and being killed by the apparitions to make the marker whole? At the moment when Isaacs mind is 'unlocked' by the dark machine, the ubernecro appears, as if it's attracted or seeking him for some reason. Perhaps it could tell Isaac was now capable of making the marker whole again, or it could have course be because he was now capable of destroying it. I don't get this convergence lark though.

Maybe the red markers are just an evil version of the black markers? An error in copying.

[EDIT] Actually, i wonder if convergence is the combining of many Necros to make another Hivemind? Did you notice that the ubernecro had the same head as the Hivemind? Perhaps he was the juvenile form of it, travelling there to create the final form. The red markers might be something that is required to create a hive mind, or perhaps they were creating the hivemind there in order to protect the marker from being 'completed'. Keep your enemies close etc...

Great games though they are, I have to say I have always considered the storyline to be absolutely massive ********. Like MGS level of ********. What exactly is going on and what the different faction's motiviation is is a total mystery to me. I know the unitologists want everybody to be a necromorph and yada yada but why exactly they want that (wipe out all human life....profit?) is never made clear. I sense a grand Lost style revelation in part three that will make even less sense than what preceded it.

Honestly I wish they have left the setup as 'Space!' 'Monsters!' 'Go!'
 
The thoughts behind unitology are that it is a way to unite humanity, end famine, poverty, disease, war, etc. I don't know how many members know that this means they won't be human when this happens or what. That Dr Mercer from DS1 knew and saw necromorphs as an improved way of life. But what the founder, Altman, thought I don't think we know.
 
DLC only took me an hour on zealot which seemed a little short :(

Dead Space 2 is between 5-7 hours though so it doesn't seem that bad really.

5 hours and a bit for me on hardcore. An hours DLC isn't that bad in my eyes, as long as it's quality which apparently it's not until the end.

I'm on chapter 10 after 8 or so hours, so 5-7 doesn't sound like the norm to me.

In any case, I'm finding this game annoying quite frequently now. They regularly throw you into a room filled with stupidly fast enemies whilst you're at your most vulnerable - low health and/or ammo - and somehow expect you to survive it. Other times you're given a bit of health and then it's immediately gone again when you're attacked out of the blue. The first game managed so throw lots of enemies at you whilst still giving you time to attack each one, I don't know why they decided it needed to be made much more frustrating in the sequel. I can see why they've put the difficulty option into the in-game options menu, but it shouldn't need that in the first place.

Also not enjoying the lack of atmosphere compared to DS, the seemingly ineffective weapons even on lower difficulty levels, and the characters and voice acting are dull and uninteresting.

It's immensely disappointing, because I adored the first game and really, really enjoyed playing it through again just before DS2 arrived. I just wish they'd looked more closely at what made the first game great and worked on those areas, rather than adding more nonsense in for the sake of it.
