Death/Dying

About 10 years ago i had a huge heart attack. I was gone then zapped back 3 times, doc said last one was long time. I oviously didnt twig i was gone first time, but the other 2 i remember it being black nothing. Get scares occaisionally with chest pains, but at least im sure theres no everlasting hell or heaven waiting for me. So im no longer scared of the afterlife. Also had triple heart bypass very painful op !

Heres to your continued good health.

It is a pretty logical thought process to deduce that life after death is the same as before life, nothingness.

This creates a paradox for human minds, as nothing is still something as it can be given a name..

All we know for certain in this life, is that you have existed in the abstract concept in which we understand what existence is..

From this, it is not unreasonable to suggest that you (not really you) may one day experience sentience through another concoction of atoms.

After all, we are all merely the universe experiencing itself.

Well, back on topic..
Cant say i am scared of death. Im old enough now to understand a little of my mortality.
I lead a lifestyle that isn't exactly conducive to longevity, and although i could probably change, i cant say i am really that fussed or motivated to do so. I would be happy to live long enough for my daughter to be able to stand on her own 2 feet in this world, so another 8-10 years should suffice. Also, Im pretty certain that my best years are behind me already.. its all down hill from here :)

Life is what you make it. Look up not down and much more happiness, truth, beauty and wisdom will come your way.

The Day I start believing in afterlife/reincarnation or alternate universes is when the 1st alien turns up!
until then, im alive, I appreciate people who appreciate me in their lives, from my point of view the world will end when I die, and im sure there are some that might feel the same when I go,
till then I have been enjoying life and will still continue to, I would never let religion or faith or gods define how I live, your life is your own, so own it, don't let others do it for you
I guess weather there is any afterlife is just down to your own fantasy about it all, you will know when your there, failing that, it will be a long long sleep which im looking forward to :)

Well the OP was who is scared of dying.
I do not think I am, I do not think there is any 'hell' to worry about.
If my consciousness happens to appear somewhere else after this one, then no doubt it won't be too bad.

I have a relatively healthy fear of pain, however. So I won't relish a slow painful death, and I would rather dread losing my mind in stages of dementia. This would be something I would rather avoid, and think by then hopefully some euthanasia option might be available.
Burn me to ashes and shoot me into space, or add me to a firework and explode me, after harvesting any useful organs...

As a proud and confident atheist I must agree. Once I'm gone I'm gone. Do what you want with my mortal meat sack. If it can help others then so be it, otherwise put me in the ground and let my constituent parts rejoin the ecosystem that spawned my life. :)

No ,I Feel Life is far to long,,

The older you get the less fun life is.....:(

Not true. The older you get the wiser you get. Life is what you make it. Live it and have fun because soon it will be over.

Try and leave this world a better place than you found it. Sounds simple but takes effort. :)

Death does not worry me too much, I'm more scared of being old sitting in a chair dribbling and weeing myself

Similar, Im more worried about how my mind will deteriorate as i age to the point i doubt ill even remember the point of life or even who i am (Alzheimer's runs through our family unfortunately) the death part is the only comfort that if i do get stuck with this terrible illness that the end fate is always the same.

A different way of looking at it i guess

Now i missed all the deleted threads ??, i was drinking 8 cans of stella, watching football, and smoking like snoop dog.

People stop bringing religion into a life and death thread.

Religion has absolutely nothing to do with life or death.

You don't see a lion on the Serengeti praying for its next meal to be an easy catch. :D

You live you die, you cannot have lived until you have died.

You cannot die until you have lived.

See the paradox, the question should be? What is life for death to exist? ;)

Disagreed.

I don't think you can discuss the feelings one has toward either life or death, without considering religious, scientific, or any other belief that concerns itself largely upon what comes after life on earth (or indeed what life actually is).

For example, for the religiously inclined; the comfort of knowing in their heart that there is life after death could totally eradicate the fear of death completely if the faith is strong enough.

On the other hand, the scientifically persuaded may take a lot of comfort from the fact that the components that make up their physical form will go on to contribute towards new life, or new natural constructs.

Personally I don't fear death. I don't see the point in fearing death. However it happens, whether it is sudden, painful, painless, ongoing or planned...Pain and death are part of the Human Experience, and without death (as you quite rightly said) there is no life. Without pain there is no pleasure etc etc etc. It is an honour to be able to die purely for the fact that one has been able to live.

Let's go back to the OP

So who is scared of death/dying?

It's an interesting topic, that has many varied opinions.

So the varied opinions are that religion can be for billions of people, a very big part of life & death.
