Death row final statements

So a thread about death row final statements, and all you pick up on is the race of the offenders. Go OCUK

We can pick up on whatever we like about the offenders. We have not put opinions into the argument, only observed that the blacks and Mexicans on death row are significantly over represented in comparison to their percentage of the state population.

I actually had a discussion about this with a man from a global car manufacturer during a visit to Detroit not so long ago.

EDIT: Spelling corrected :)

So they give these statements while strapped in the chair/bed then?

"You're not about to witness an execution, you are about to witness a murder. I am strapped down for something Marcus Rhodes did. I never killed anybody, ever. I love you, Mom. I love you, Tali. This is wrong. This whole thing is wrong. I can't believe you are going to let Marcus Rhodes walk around free. Justice has let me down. Somebody completely screwed this up. I love you too, Mom. Well Warden, if you are going to murder someone, go ahead and do it. Pull the trigger. It's coming. I can feel it coming. Goodbye"

I'm reading the incident reports and that still doesn't sway my opinion that these people shouldn't be executed.

If thats the first thing that springs to mind when viewing the material then you have issues.

If it makes you feel better the first thing I thought of was to go to the people released from death row to see how many had had their convictions overturned.

Too many to justify the death sentence imo.

I read the first statement, I don't know what he did, I didn't look...but I was struck by the fact that the State has just taken the life of a Childs Father, a Wifes Huband and a Mothers Son, ...now I assume he was a murderer and you could argue he potentially did the same at some point in his past (going by his statement)...but it doesn't sit right with me....not one little bit.

I couldn't bring myself to read any of the others.

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
I found the whole thing quite interesting and genuinely think the death penalty is needed for people who are don't deserve to live.
The stories are strange as you know these men are all now dead, but the world is a better place without them.

If you don't want to be put do death, then don't rape/murder/turture anybody.

Who's right is it to decide who "deserves" to live.

Yeah, certainly isn't easy reading for me...

What if the sentence was wrong?

When and where do they gives these statements?

Immediately prior to execution.

I think they and the crime statements together actually illustrate the pointless futility of the death penalty. The crimes are barbaric, but the executions are often state staged drama for people who would watch animals being tortured and laugh.

There are a disproportionate number of blacks and hispanics on death row not because they commit a higher percentage of crime but because they often are less likely to be able to afford the defence that causes the sentence either to be taken off the table at trial or commuted. They are also more likely not to be able to fight or contest a wrongful arrest because, again, they cannot afford to have anyone able do that. The white people on death row are also usually from the lowest income groups. Anyone who thinks Texas has a racially balanced or non prejudiced, non money based justice system in regard to execution really has to be not reading anything balanced about this subject.

They should do away with the death penalty, it condemns the society that uses it.
