Decent game controller?

Was supposed to be since 27th July but it's out of stock on the official site it seems.

Just did a quick test with the dual sense features out of the box, in Days Gone and I assume others will behave the same way, has to be wired on PC and disabling Steam input allows adaptive triggers to work nicely as these games support it, the touch panel works in either mode. Steam input off = adaptive triggers but vibration doesn't work, Steam input on = vibration works but not adaptive trigger.

Double meh.

just for the PC you're not going to get G7 Pro levels of performance. Obviously best suited to consoles.
You can just overclock the polling rate with hidusbf, you need to set it to 8000 to get a polling rate of 1000Hz. It has an average analog stick latency of around 2.5ms and a button latency of 2.3ms when using it wired with an overclocked polling rate, so it should easily match the G7 Pro in performance for competitive games.

Voids the warranty though and you need to install it as a driver and some such having had a look at it before when I explored using a dual sense in Last of Us for the adaptive triggers. I don't think the faff of having a cable attached, no PC geared remapping options and missing haptics if not using Steam input (which then means no adaptive triggers) is worth the effort vs just using the Gamesirs.

Hexgaming has said it will look to improve support for PC platforms though so hopefully they release a version that is more PC friendly, given they market it for PC as well. Ironically Bluetooth is polling at 500Hz whereas wired is 250Hz, but controller connections via BT on PC are anything but reliable.

Where did you read that it voids the warranty? It's not changing any settings on the controller, it's just telling the USB port on your computer to check for updates more frequently, it's up to the controller whether it responds or not. For example you can set the polling rate of an Xbox controller to 1000Hz and it won't respond because it's limited to updating 125 times per second. I used to find wired a bit of a faff until I found a nice flexible cable, and realistically most people wouldn't want to use wireless in competitive games anyway.

Hexgaming said so, on a controller that offers lifetime warranty, being denied warranty in future if they find out it was OCd might be a concern when spending £250 on a controller. Anyway I'm playing on PC games, nobody on PC games playing competitive is going to be using a controller, if they are those numbers must be tiny. I prefer the comfort and freedom of a high performance wireless controller instead on the few games that feel nicer with a controller.

I don't see anything on their warranty page about the warranty being void if you change the polling rate of a USB port on your computer. However if that is the case then just don't mention it because it's not like they'll be able to check the polling rate of the last device it was connected to. It's surely game dependent on whether you'd want to use a controller for competitive games, for example I believe most pro COD players prefer a controller with aim assist over keyboard and mouse.

Yeah COD and Apex are just better on controller at this point. The Apex pro scene supports both inputs but all the pros are now using controllers.

Any recommendations for a wireless gamepad for use with steam for about £50? I’m currently using a Nintendo switch pro controller which is pretty good, but I’m sure there’s something better out there.

You know what? I get it now, I've said before I am not a console gamer, my PS5 experience is probably 1 hour at best to date lol, so when I got this hexgaming phantom and realised they sent me the potentiometer version not the hall effect, I wasn't expecting much, but actually, the more I've gamed with it now, especially in FPS games, the more I realise it's genuinely excellent. The fact that you can adjust deadzone/drift via the dials at the back are a bonus for when that time comes round.

Also, the 250Hz and low resolution points don't seem to matter in actual games, very responsive and very precise, I do note that the sticks on dual sense travel a longer distance than any third party controller on PC, and this is what makes them feel more precise I think because you can be more granular with movements, whereas the other controllers are either very linear, or if you apply a custom curve with GameSirs, then tweakable to your liking.

Here's what my tests found with the Phantom non HE:

The G7 Pro is over 3000 in resolution, but I've found that in FPS I can be more accurate with the Phantom, which as mentioned, is a Dual Sense Edge as it uses the Sony internals.

Hexgaming said they will send me the hall effect version at a later date, so I think this will replace the Tarantula Pro for me as I do like symmetrical stick layouts, and it's also nice that the touchpad and adaptive triggers are supported on Sony titles which we now are seeing more of.

I'm also using it wired as realised I had a very lightweight cable that is perfect for the job from a previous gaming mouse, so just connect it to my monitor's USB port when needed and it basically feels wireless as there's no clunky cable snagging on anything.

The Sony haptic motors are also very nice, so another bonus. I also like how light the main buttons are , almost no force is needed to actuate them,. but I never find myself accidentally pressing them either, so with that in mind I don't miss them not being mechanical buttons, but dso miss the mouse click sounds of meh buttons when using it lol.

You should try KontrolFreeks if you want more granular movements, I use the CQCX on the left stick and Vortex on the right. The PlayStation version fits the Gamesir Cyclone 2 as well.

Definitely worth changing the polling rate with hidusbf if you're using it wired, it will feel more responsive and accurate in FPS games.

I don't think control freaks are needed on the Phantom as it comes with 8 sets of concave/convex and higher stem stick caps, the rubber is the same quality as first party controllers and what Gamesir use too so very nice quality, personally not a fan of KontrolFreeks and similar having used them before as find anything that adds too much height a bit odd.

Results tested just now after setting to 1000Hz, doesn't seem to support anything above 1000Hz btw, I assume this is normal.

Still the same resolution, but lower latency/higher polling, played some RoboCop earlier and feels about the same still which is fine, I don't play fast paced online shooters though.
