Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter

Surprised they haven't hit the target already tbh given the popularity of this title.
+1

Though I haven't seen this kickstarter mentioned on any of the major gaming sites yet (IGN, Kotaku, Joystiq or Eurogamer). Hopefully if they cover it the money will come in faster.

Yeah, thought this would be doing much better than it currently is.

I'm a little concerned that they will only hit the 250k goal. Meaning they will still take the money but only be making a 8 level expansion for DG1.
I donated because I wanted DG2. If it's just the expansion and improvements to DG1 I don't think it'll be worth it. I'll probably cancel mine near the end if they don't get enough for DG2 :(

I enjoyed DG a lot. Well, some of the levels anyway. Many seemed pretty uninspired, the expansions seemed a bit weak, and I always expected a level editor to be released which could have added lots of longevity to the game.

I'm frankly shocked to find they didn't make enough to fund a sequel, and for that reason I'm staying clear... it all sniffs a bit of poor management.

So dump the silly voice stuff & 'plot' and just churn out a load of maps. Sorted. :-)

They're doing a twitter thingy to try and attract more attention.

- Let's all set our reminders and tweet about The DG2 kickstarter (http://kickstarter.hiddenpath.com) this Monday, July 16th at 2pm EST / 11am PST. Having a large number of backers all tweet about the game at the same time will draw attention to the campaign around the same time that other press is going to hit and we can bring in more folks to the kickstarter who would want to join in making it more successful for everyone.

Just to note, that's 18:00 hours our time tomorrow.

i really like having a plot and voice acting :x
Yes, but they can't have actually spent much money on that part, can they? The plot is... er, well... back of a beer mat stuff, and the voice acting could have been done by someone's cheesy, amateur dramatic parent.

Maybe I'm just being unsympathetic, and failing to grasp how much money it costs to develop an engine as pretty as that, but that thing sold like hot cakes in the Steam Sales, even if it didn't shift enough units (I presume) at full price. And of course it's on the XBox too. Maybe that's where all the money was wasted... porting it to there?

Anyway, I can't be the only one who feels like this, otherwise their kickstarter would have more kick and less start. I wish them well, and would happily fork out a fiver in a sale for a sequel (as I did for the first), but that's my limit for a tower defence game, no matter how much bling it wears.

Actually I just watched the video they put out about it. I'm amazed the team is so big for such a "small" project. That explains why they need the money... or a pay cut. It's a tower defence game, not Skyrim. :-)

Yeah whats with all the hate for the voice actor ><

Its creeping its way up. I must admit this is the 1 kickstarter I've genuinely cared about so I probably will put my money in at some point, just not sure how much.

Tempted to cancel my pledge with this. :(

I really wanted DG2, but it's looking shakey to wether or not they'll even hit the bottom target for an 8 level expansion. If that's all they make, my pledge isn't value for money...

I'm also concerned by all the AMD and Razer tie ins. They could probably back half the game if they wanted, but instead they seem to be getting a load of in your face advertising in exchange for some mice and cards to give away...

Just take the latest update.. They could have put some concept art up or something, but there's just this:

I think the other thing that is probably holding a fair few people back is just the fact it's a tower defence game - how much different can DG2 be to play compared to DG1 really? Enough for it to be worth a sequel? I suspect for many people it's debatable and they don't really see the value in a DG2 when they already have DG1.

I think the biggest problem is that they've been wildly optimistic in their expectation of high-tier backers.

Total amount of funding they hope to obtain for tiers of $250 or above:

$768,750 [over three-quarters of the stretch goal total!]

Total amount raised from those tiers so far:

$5,950 [less than 1% available from those tiers!]

I wasn't sure they'd made a mistake with their goal structure initially, but I am now.

Hopefully the fact that this is heading to be one of the highest-profile Kickstarter failures to date will, ironically, provide some much needed publicity/sympathy/backing.

EDIT: Actually, "failure" is too strong a word in retrospect. But after reading the KS comments, it's clear that the convoluted and arcane DLC>Multiplayer>DG2 goal path has been harmful to their efforts. I can't shake the feeling that if they'd just said "$15 gets you DG2 at some point. Pledge more and get it sooner (along with some special deals on hardware)", they'd be having more success.

I think I'm going to cancel mine, it seems like the entire thing has stalled, it doesn't even look like they're going to hit the first target, let alone $1,000,000.

It seems like all that might come of this is a costly expansion, it's kinda sad as I'd love to see a sequel. Hopefully they'll learn from this, go back to the drawing board and come back in six months time with a more successful attempt.
