Hey,
I'm using Windows Vista's defragmenter tool. I have a hard drive with about 180gb of used space. So far I think it's been running for about 2 hours - is this normal? My system is only about a month old too.

It's not a particularly quick or effective defrag application, to be honest. If you're just looking for something fairly straightforward, Defraggler is worth a look. I use PerfectDisk myself, it's been very good.

Try Defraggler instead. The Windows defragment tools have always been notoriously slow, and not very efficient. I don't know about the Vista one, I have Vista on my laptop here at work but still use Defraggler as it does a good job.

Defraggler is available from http://www.defraggler.com/.

no it'll finish the file it's on then stop, don't worry

i'd use a 3rd party defrag tool, like o&o defrag (pay for), or jkdefrag

So what benefits does defragmentation have? Fast loading applications? A more responsive OS? Maybe game frame-rate boosts? Less memory consumption?

Fast loading applications A more responsive OS, faster loading game levels

basically with fragmentation, a file gets split into sections on the hard drive, so say a file is 4 parts, 1 could be stored at the end, 2 at the start, 3 at the end, and 4 at the start

so the drive has to move from each end back and forth to read the file (which will take a bit of extra time)

if the file had all parts 1234 right next to each other on the drive it'd read it in 'one go'

so de-fragmentation is important

give o&o defrag a trial, works wonders!

Defraggler says I have 51GB of fragmented files. Does this mean that once it's finished I will have regained 51GB?

Edit: Ah nvm, that's probably a really stupid presumption.

no it just means that 51gb of your files will be accessed slower than they should be :)

disbaling system restore before defrag is a good idea, that wastes TONS of space

Using Diskeeper at the moment and i've been experimenting with the Automatic Defrag and the IFAAST settings.

Automatic Defrag works well, an analysis with Defraggler on the drive shows no fragmented files.

Does anyone else use these features? Any comments ?

i didnt defrag my drive for about 3 years. When i finally decided to give it a go it made no difference whatsoever. I therefore conclude with my case study of 1, its useless :P

XP defrager was a cut down version of a 3rd party one (think it was Diskkeeper), not sure on Vista.

And I know peeps who never defraged for year(s), then decided to do so and broke HDD.

Defraging is needed in FAT and NTFS (esp if you add/change/remove files all the time) no matter what anyone tells you, if you dont want to defrag buy a MAC.

I have Beta tested them all and PerfectDisc was always the best but until 2008 build I was stuck for Stealth one like Vistas (runs in background when PC idle) and I tried Diskkeepers new one and it did basically nothing.

It claimed HDD was badly fragged but defragged it in 30seconds (BS), so I installed my Perfectdisc 2007 and it took like 45mins to defrag so it was working.

I held out for 2008 final and now happy again.
