Cars you could be looking at in that range are:-
Clio sport 172/182
Civic type r
Golf GTi
Leon FR or Cupra 1.8T

All of the above are a higher insurance group than the fiesta but they are all in your price range

I literally just went through the same process, albeit with a slightly higher budget. I'm picking the ST up this afternoon!

With regards to the other cars mentioned above, basically the ST is slower than the Type-R and Clio 182 (and likely the Golf and Seats, but I've not checked) but is (in my opinion anyway) the better looking car and a nicer place to be if you're doing a few miles. The interior is definitely leagues better than the Clios which would be its nearest competition, but it will lose out badly on raw performance if that's what you're looking for.
Insurance wise I got the ST down to just over £900 a year comprehensive (21 years old, 3 years no claims, parents on the policy, tactically worded), and the Clio was just over £1300, and the Type-R was around £1800, so that's worth bearing in mind on your budget.

I'm sure you can pick up a nice example the ST in that price band. Make sure to ask here for any question you're unsure about, they were great in helping me choose!

You're pretty much in exactly the same boat then haha. :p

At the moment I'm leaning towards the ST, quite heavily tbh. The other cars I could consider are just to expensive to insure. The ST will provide a fun, nippy and very comfortable car while still being affordable and look good.

It ticks all those boxes perfectly. Also you can assume it to be more reliable than the Clio hopefully, and should cost less to repair. It really is just a trade off of performance for those things really.

It's still a very nippy fun car, just not quite as quick as others in its class, but if you can live with that, it's an amazing car. If you can find one with the extras (tech pack (folding mirrors, auto lights/wipers, rear privacy glass), full leather seats (heated fronts) then it's even nicer again.

Get a Clio :)

My friend had an ST, I never drove it but I really disliked the interior of it in comparison to the 182.

The clio's aren't any more unrelliable than any other car and I'm sure that the ST's have their problems too.

The fact that they were rarer (near me) and also handled fantastically swung me to the 182.

only get a clio if you are a hairdresser.

tin and very badly made.

St all the way!! and i own a garage i have drove both cars.

Me too.

It is :

More economical
More space inside
Better spec - leather seats, heated seats etc

the best part - It's not french :p

Yes I agree on all points.

However I do appreciate the handling and performance credentials the Clio has. I just don't believe it is the better all round car.

The handling and performance is where the Clio has over the ST. That's it I think. I can live with the ST day to day more and spend more time inside it than the Clio.

I'd agree with that though I find I prefer the looks of the Clio.

If you're buying a car to enjoy the Clio wins. To live with day to do on a commute more than 5-10 miles I personally find it a bit much due to the stiff ride. However lots of people don't find it a problem at all though I guess it depends which roads you have to drive. Economy wise it'll return 42/43mpg on the motorway @ 65/70mph.

I would quite like to drive an ST actually so that I could form a proper opinion.
