delidded 8700k suddenly getting hot

I bought all my components last year from overclockers and got a delidded 8700k (I got the 4.9GHz option I think) but overclocked to 5GHz

I periodically use HWinFO and Core temp just to check things out when I'm gaming or doing anything intensive. When I initially overclocked my idle temps were 29c and maxed out at 75c. A few days ago (day before the heatwave) I checked the temps and I was hitting 78c in GTA V online. So I did a stress test with prime 95 and had HWinfo open my CPU is getting into low 90s but gaming high 70s. idle temps are now 33c I dont think my cooler is failing (fractal s360) Any ideas?

Just to check from new your temps have changed

Idle 29 to 33
Load 75 to 78

Is that right? If so that's completely within the realms of variance depending on what the ambient temps were when you first built it and just a bit of dust build up on your radiator.

One core just hit 80c on GTA V online also that same core is getting into the 90s when stress tested. It was never like that before. The highest temp I ever got under stress testing was 78 which is what its hitting under normal gaming and I cleaned out the cooler just to see if it helped

Also to add when using the selector on my cooler to go from pwm to auto to see if it made any difference I noticed a slight movement in my cooler and had to tighten one corner to the same as the other three screws I'm not sure how its became slightly slack but could this have caused anything should I have taken the cooler off and reapplied paste?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the ambient temperatures at the moment a lot higher, thus your CPU temps would increase by approx the same amount?

So if it's 5° hotter then your CPU will be that much higher?

yes I accept that ambient temps are higher at the moment, maybe I'm not explaining myself right. My main concern is that the one core thats hitting in to he 90s when it never did that before that core never went past 78c when stressed

Ah right, so that's the real problem then? As your other temps seem fine

Personally, I'd take the cooler off the CPU, clean them both up, re-paste and re-seat the cooler, then go from there

yeah I think I will. MY CPU core temps when at full stress are mid 70s to mid 80s apart from core 5 which is in the 90s

Can a dellid go wrong?

It shouldn't do though IIRC there was some talk that the liquid metal may need re-applying after a period of time, best have a Google on that one

Thanks I will do. With the cooler I used the paste that was preapplied where as in the past I have always used NHT-1. Probably the paste on the cooler isn't that good either.

Yeah, I only use Thermal Grizzly stuff now, much better temp transfer capability, OCUK sell it

I'll need to get some isopropyl alcohol or arti clean too. I'll have to wait till I get paid on friday but will monitor rhw temps to se if anything changes. I just hope I dont have to remount the back plate becase it was an absolute **** to fit

I just put some thermal grizzly on and I'm now getting idle 25-28c but thats at stock as I reset back to defaults. I'll give it a few hours before I overclock again

nope still getting way too hot. idle temps are great, cinebench i get 86 on the hot core, prime fft 1344 gets to mid 90s on the hot core

Under warranty, contact OCUK, if not then next logical step would be to crack it open and see if the liquid metal is ok?

overclockeers have said they will take the chip back to check and reapply sillicone even though its out of warranty which is great.
