Dell Vostro 1500

Just had a bash on CSS, 1280x800 with everything on high. Averages around 100-140fps, didn't take notice during a firefight. It's VERY smooth, I'm well impressed since the last time I played CSS was on a ti4200 and I got about 30fps :)

As long as it plays San Andreas on full draw distance, I shall be quite happy. I've got a ruck of older PC games to get through. LOL.

Mine also arrived today, ETA was 31st August.

Very, very pleased. Only played Oblivion so far but at 1440x990 with the highest settings in game (HDR but no AA), got 35fps constantly in the dungeons bit.

Have yet to get outside and see how it copes, allthough i hear newer drivers improve performance a little as well.

Mine seems to suffer a tiny bit with the famous grainy screen but its only when you get a white screen like word and drag it over the desktop you can see some little specs, but its nothing major and unoticable in most situations.

Has anyone else experienced songs skipping at all? Apparantly its a well known problem in vista and microsoft are working with dell to fix it:
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_audio&thread.id=35264

I turned off audio enhancements and updated wireless and audio drivers and that seemed to do it, but no one thing alone seems to fix it, odd i know.

But other than that fantastic, the battery fits well, it protudes a little due to it being the 9 cell mentioned by the OP.

It responds pretty quickly to everything, and i've even got folder sharing working between Vista and XP so all seems well so far!

It's a better looking laptop in person i find, it is a little bit big and heavy, but the solid feel to the build quality is worth that i feel.

I'll stop rabbiting on now, but overall very very happy.

Its nice to hear all the great reviews, the one I ordered was due on 7th Sept and I've been called and told to expect it on Friday. Should give me just enough time to play with it before the gf's birthday!

Good news about the gaming performance, one of my hopes was that she could play EQ2 on there.

I'll keep you posted

Min

Playing oblivion again it's actually hovering around the 45-50fps mark.

I am still yet to get outside, i had forgotten how long that beginning section is!

Plus i keep getting distracted and wanting to do something else with my new laptop!

For those with a vostro 1500, does anyone know what those three padlock symbols next to the power button mean?

One has got the number 9 in it and is lit up on mine at the minute, another one has got 'A' in it and the thrid and closest one to the power button has got a down arrow in it, both of there are not lit up at the minute.

LOL!!! I feel like such an idiot now lol! It makes perfect sense now you've said it. *insert embarrassed smiley here*

hehe no worries mate. im loving my vostro upto now. more getting used to vista personally. btw where are people getting driver upgrades from etc?

If you are talking about the audio and wireless drivers i dont know, as i have heard a little bit of song skipping but nothing major and would like to try and get it sorted out if possible.

I thought it was just my music or something at first until Ranek mentioned it, i hope a fix comes in the form of a windows update or something soon so there is less fussing about to do.

If you go to the Dell UK site, under Support & Help, Drivers & Downloads. Then just choose the model etc.

I'm not convinced it's entirely sorted the problem, though it may now be me listening for it and just trying to do too many tasks at once.

But there was very definite skipping, apparantly it tends to occur only in playlists of more than one song, and in the last 20 seconds of a track worst.

Something to do with a buffer area of memory becoming full, only thing i can think of??? Hopefully a future driver update, but some people seem to think it needs a Vista update such as Service Pack 1 later in the year.

Hi. Thanks for the write up. After cancelling my inspiron order I'm now looking at one of these.

Can you tell me does it have a scrolling area on the touchpad?

Ta muchly.

Id love to know how this secruity camra works.

You said it emails you when it detects motion.... So if your on holiday and you leave the laptop at home to look over the house.... it will email you for when you get back so you know uve been burgled lol.

Or if you leave it to watch over anywhere you need to be at a pc to know its detected motion anyway?

Might be useful if it takes pictures and emails them to you, leave the laptop running in your bedroom for example, and when the burglar comes to pick it up, a nice mug shot for the police.
