Dell Vostro 1500

Thats the Quicket power settings setting the display brightness.
I just spoke to my mate who also got his Vostro yesterday and apparently this is not an issue with the nVidia drivers that are supplied on the bundled Dell drivers CD...

That would explain why I get it and he doesn’t : D

Im using the drivers from Dell and I get it. My old dell laptop goes it too and that uses ATI. Im 90% sure its when the monitor settings are applied as quickset loads up.

Yeah, it is.

If you disable the nvidia startup entires (around 4 of them), it eliminates the black screen flash.

Doesn't bother me so I leave them alone.

Btw, nice to see Spie has created a laptop/PDA forum.:)

What’s everyone’s experience of using this laptops wireless adaptor?

Mine is fine connecting to my router, giving me internet access and allowing me to see recourses on my network, but it won't let me access them

The laptops wired connection is fine - everything on that works!

I'm not sure whether its a Vista/XP issue, an adaptor issue or a problem somewhere with the wireless part of my router, a Speedtouch 585 v6.

Any thoughts :)

Cheers,

SW.

Wireless has been pretty flawless for me.

At home, I'm mainly wired. But when I do go wireless, I have no problems with my Linksys WRT54GL router (flashed with Tomato firmware).

When I'm round the girlfriends house, I get no problems with the Netgear wireless router there either.

Hmm. Looks like I might have to dig out my auxiliary Netgear then and use it as a wireless bridge :D

I'll give that a go tomorrow.

Thing is, I could understand if the adaptor wouldn't connect at all, but it connects, and it’s a solid as a rock - it just won't let me browse my desktops shared folders :(

SW.

Sounds like a windows network setup issue.

Can you ping the desktop machine ok from the laptop?
Aye. I can see the resources I want to access too! But when I try clicking on them though (shared folders - form the desktop) nothing happens, then after about 40 seconds I get the, "You do not have permission etc" message :(

If I plug my cat5 in, it works straight away

How are people finding gaming on the Vostro?

Purchased the Orange Box from Steam the other day and I'm addicted to TF2.

Very playable at 1280x800 (no AA) with all options on high.

Going to change from the 163.44 drivers as they're causing problems with the game. Going to give the 163.75's from laptopvideo2go a whirl.

Got my Vostro 1500 yesterday, I ordered the following spec:

V1500 CORE 2 DUO T7500 2.20GHZ, 800, 4M
VOSTRO 1500 15.4 WSXGA+ TRUE LIFE
VOSTRO 1500 BLACK COVER CAMERA
2048 MB 667 MHZ DUAL-CHANNEL DDR2 SDRAM
HARD DRIVE 160GB SERIAL ATA (7200RPM)
FIXED INTERNAL 8X DVD+/-RW DRIVE
PRIMARY 9-CELL 85WHR LI-ION BATTERY
256 MB NVIDIA GEFORCE 8600M GT
EUROPEAN - DELL TRUEMOBILE 355 INTERNAL
DELL™ WIRELESS 1390 802.11B/G MINI-

Having placed lost of orders with Dell previously through work, I was rather surprised with how sensible the size of the box the Vostro came in was!

My initial impressions after opening the box was that the V1500 was pretty huge and rather heavy but from reading here I was already expecting that anyway. Going from a Latitude E620 to a Vostro I was expecting to notice a little less 'quality' in the build design but to be honest this couldnt be further from the truth.

My gripes with the Latitude D620 were that trackpads were awful and the keyboards were not a lot better. I can honestly say the trackpad and keyboard in the Vostro are superb!

The best thing I love about this new laptop is the screen. I went for the WSXGA+ panel which supports 1680x1050, its got a glossy finish and looks absolutely superb! The only issue I have discovered so far is that the wireless card doesn’t seem to get on too well with one of my networks at work, having said that, my Latitude didn't either so perhaps its a config issue but who knows?

On the whole, I'm very, very pleased! What a superb model. I would seriously question if the Vostro range can be beaten in terms of money/performance!

It looks like the router was the issue...

I'm happily setup now using my Netgear :D

How many of you Vostro owners have ditched McAfee?

It took 2 days to annoy the hell out of me, took about 30 seconds before it annoyed the missus:D

The difference now its gone is quite significant.;)

As a first time Vista user i have to say, so far i`m impressed. Its not too far from XP as to render my knowledge useless, but new enough for me to enjoy playing around with it.

64 processes running ATM. prob a bit high, but i will look into it further when i have time.

Held off buying a laptop for years. I simply did not think we would use it. Since we have had the Vostro, i have hardly used my desktop. :)

Are the 163.44 drivers the ones that Dell offer on their website? I've been playing HL2:EP2 for about 30 minutes now and my screen has gone all garbled. I've basically got the game world without any textures!

Don't know if it's a driver issue or a GPU overheating issue!

Got an annoying issue here with my Vostro 1500. Most likely Vista/Firefox related but here goes:

When I load up the laptop, and enter the desktop, I have to wait atleast 1 minute before I can attempt to load Firefox. If I try to load it too quickly Firefox never loads, but the process is always visible in the task manager. If I try to close the process, it doesn't go away.

This means that I have to reboot the laptop and wait for sometime before I load FF. Does anyone else have this problem?

Also, is the DVD-RW dual layer?

How do you get the USB working properly on this thing??

Device manager shows that there is aproblem with all of the USB and USB2 controllers, and whatever drivers I try to install, they don't work.

I've tried drivers from the dell website, and the ones on the cd, and random ones from the internet. How do I get this working properly so that the webcam works?

(All the webcam software is installed, it just tells me I need to plug the camera in!!)

I have this problem on my work Dell desktop (with XP Pro) but I've never been able to solve it so I just wait before starting FF.
