I just wondered how do I check if it is an LG screen or not?

I have looked at the devices page and the monitor is only listed as Generic monitor.

Any ideas how to check?

Many thanks

Deks

Deks, the way to check is go into device manager, then properties of the generic monitor. Then click on the details tab, then drop down the box and choose hardware id. It will then show the panel you have.

Many thanks djay, i'll check when I get home.

Just to say i'm not displeased with the display or anything it's more out of interest knowing which panel it is. I have to say first impressions of the laptop are very favourable. Even with all the bloatware from Dell and even tho its running Vista it feels very responsive.

I am seriously considering installing XP tho as I just do not like a lot of things about Vista. The windows explorer is just terrible compared to XP IMHO.

Thanks again

Deks

How quick are Dell with delivery? I'm annoyed as you pay £60 for delivery and they've estimated a delivery date of the 15th May, AGEEEESSSSS away!!!! :(

Still not received it yet, it's in the Pre-Production stage and the delivery date is still estimated as 15th May :(

My M1530 arrived yesterday, specs are:

Core-2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz
4GB DDR2 RAM
160GB SATA 7200rpm Hard Drive
256MB GeForce 8600GT
15.4" Widescreen TFT Display (1680 x 1050)
9-cell battery

Samsung screen, doesn't look grainy but it's not very vibrant (a tad washed out) and viewing angles aren't great, but I'm very happy with the machine as a whole!

Might try and see if I can get the LCD swapped for a LG in the coming weeks, chances look slim though :P

Am I missing something here. I have specced the two systems to near identical, the Vostro actually has the lesser of the two processors, yet it costs over 100 more

There is some pretty tempting deals on the outlet.

As soon as I see the desktop deals my mind goes blank, as it has been a good few years when I have been completly out of touch with the CPU scene and the sort of prices that I should be paying for a decent system.

I suppose when I actually have the cash for a desktop system I will realistically start looking all over the place for a decent machine, like I did around 4 years ago and then the reviews to back them up.

Knowing how I am with technology and wanting it to last, I can easily see myself paying around £1,000 or more!

just looking into buying one of these, but thought I would just check the included accessories stuff, apparently you get this little lot with it:

"The Dell XPS M1530 also comes with a lot of accessories. E.g., there is a wrapper, which make it possible to easily transport the notebook. However, it's can only take the notebook itself. There isn't even enough space left for the power adapter.
Besides some tools and driver software, also an operating system (Windows Home Premium on a DVD) is included. But this still is not all. In order to provide a special incentive for XPS buyers, an elegant briefcase for the provided CDs and the comprehensive user manual is included. A remote control of ExpressCard size, headphones by Creative, and also a micro fibre cloth for cleaning the notebook are also amongst the accessories."

Can anyone confirm this ?

The spec I am looking at getting is:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 cache)
Vista® Home Premium - English
Memory 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
Video Card NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 8600M GT with 256MB dedicated graphic memory
Hard Drive 200GB (7200RPM) SATA Hard Drive
Optical Devices Fixed 8x DVD+/-RW Slim Slot Load drive, including SW
Primary Battery Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)
Colour Choice 2.0 mega pixel Camera & Tuxedo Black for CCFL Display
LCD 15.4" Widescreen™ WXGA (1440x900) TFT Display TrueLife™

couple of questions, having read the entire thread, it would appear that the upgrade to the 1440 x 900 screen is almost a must ??

Also, does the 7200 rpm HDD really make a difference performance wise ?
I was told it would delay the build by 10 days to add the 7200 rpm HDD...wonder if its worth the wait ?

Wrapper - the guy means slipcase or sleeve, basically like this one:
m1330_sleeve_th.jpg

It's handy for slipping the notebook into and then putting into another bag, but it's not very padded so you might want a proper notebook bag if you plan on carrying it around a lot.

Briefcase - more of a small leather document wallet thing, with space for CDs and the manual etc.

The rest is all correct, the remote fits into the ExpressCard slot quite neatly, you get a set of Creative EP-630 earphones that come with a small carrybag, and the cloth.

Hi All

I have recently noticed that my Dell XPS m1530 doesnt really give me any warning when the battery is running low. It does prompt me when it gets to about 15% left, but just puts a little box up in the Left-bottom corner.

Is there anyway that I can make it play a sound or a continuous set of beeps when the battery is really low ?

R

Well, having been on the phone at work *cogh* :P for a fair while and haggling with 3 yes 3 different agents I think I have my deal sorted.

£630 inc Vat and Delivery.

not a bad price, but they were a little stuborn and I had to use my secret 10% off voucher early on in the negotiations. It was either that or they would take off the delivery charge £60, but the 10% was worth more.

At least I get my Penryn and the 1440 X 900 screen...just a little dissapointed I couldnt squeeze a little extra cash out of him. I hinted at the backpack, but nothing doing

Only had my XPS M1530 three weeks and im just about to upgrade the cpu from a T7500 2.2GHZ to a Penryne X9000 2.8GHZ. Got my tracking number now. Should be with me tomorrow. Cant wait :)

Rather than start another Dell thread, thought I'd add this on here.

Bought a Dell Inspiron 1520 (Widescreen) about 5 - 6 months ago. Is it just me or is the display quite hard on the eyes? I find the tft display is very shiny and much harder to adjust my eyes after focusing on the screen than my previous laptop (a Compaq Presario) or my desktop monitor (a Samsung Synchmaster). I've got brightness turned round very low, about 30%, and have played around with the contrast but still not a comfortable display at all. It's almost as if there's a thin "glaze" over the normally matt TFT coating.

As the Dell was about £150 cheaper than its equivalent in any other brand, I do wonder if one of the corners that may have been cut is the display quality.

Must admit I've really scaled back how much I use it at present. We only get the one pair of eyes and I'm sure that working surrounded by VDU's, then coming home and spending a large portion of leisure time looking at TV/PC/Laptop screen can't be good for them particularly if aggravated by poor display quality.

How do oyu go about upgrading parts?

The CPU is easy on the XPS. Just take the back cover off ( a few screws) Then take off the heatsink which is just unscrewing 7 screws. Take the old CPU out, stick some Arctic Silver 5 on the new CPU. Slot it in. Replace the heatsink and tightenthe 7 screws back up and bobs your uncle. Job done in 5/10 mins.
