Bit silly to jump down Samiones throat for passing a perfectly valid opinion, to be fair, hes right.

Samione - purely out of interest, do you have any examples of your work? E-mail in trust if you don't want to post it up here for obvious reasons :)

I disagree. Im sure there are many of people in this thread who would say the same.
You can plaintly see the effort people are going to, and to be told that there are no creative ideas here and this kind of stuff "devalues actual design" is not exactly constructive criticism is it? People were ASKED for their efforts. The whole point in this thread isnt it?! Someone coming on and bascially saying these are all crap without posting anything of his own is a bit sad even if it is just his tuppence worth.

gord, is that really a professional opinion, or a professional opinion heavily sugar coated by the context? :)

I don't think anyone's trying to be nasty, but this would prospectively be the actual logo of an established company, so they should be evaluated at that level, and not "forum competition" level.

I'm really impressed with some of the work in here. At least 3 of the logos designed so far would look great on the web page.

Exactly.

Now I know my submissions are well towards the bottom of the pack but I enjoyed having a go and posting them up here. Even so, i was quite offended by the comment made.

It seems to me that people are missing the sentiment of the whole thing. OcUK is a community and personally I think it shows great faith in us that Spie has asked for our efforts in designing a new logo for his company.

I don't know about you guys but for me it's just a bit of fun and an opportunity to give something back to the forums I've been making use of for the best part of 7 years.

This had made me think about how much thought people have put into all the possible uses?

Whilst something may look great at the top of site, how will it transfer to the bottom of a product advert in a magazine when it's about 2cmx1cm in size at the very most? How will it look on letterheads? On the front of a building?

Not to mention being transformed onto clothing ! ;)

That's definitely something to consider. A lot of the designs with loads of gradients and shiny surfaces won't work on clothing. But I'm sure it'd be relatively simple to modify the design for different purposes.

Sorry Burnsy, you arnt on MSN.. am I allowed this.. went for lunch in the middle of posting so its a bit delayed.

your 'professional' opinion? yet you fail to notice the poor consideration of typography in each logo? 3d and gel effects aren't design, let alone the fact that half of them won't look passable in 1 or 2 colours, have you heard of pantone? If you're offering brand and corp id services you damn well should have. Nearly all of the marques are uninspired stockart level peices of work. It's plain to see that no one has bothered to actually design a logo, had any consideration for it's application or pretty much anything else. Jumping straight into a photoshop/illustrator to design something is extremely bad practice, this is one of the first things you learn if you have any sort of design education. I'm confused as to why you keep commenting on ideas, you like the ideas. I see no ideas or thinking, let alone creative thinking at practice here. If anyone followed any sort of design process the first thing you'd do is get rid of the cliche crap such as flames, rev counters - or atleast think or some way that isn't cliche to incorporate into a logo.

cut to the chase, save yourself some time;

sorted.

CHILL WINSTON!

You may be surprised to hear that I actually agree with you. If I were to put my proper professional hat on I would be pretty close to your opinion. What you seem to have forgotten though is that this is still just a GD competition.

There is no point in mentioning pantones or the design process. People here wont/dont care. There have been very few questions and I doubt anyone has even touched pencil to paper, which I cant live without during logo design at work. But this is me on a Saturday morning, not at work, offering my opinion on the designs thus far.

I'm interested to know where gord got his "professional opinion" from, because he hasn't touched on anything substantial in any of these logo (typography, readability, brandability). All he has done is cast a really simple and rudimentary opinion on each.
I have gotten it from studying graphic design, being a fine artist and working in the design industry. And yes, I have provided a "really simple and rudimentary opinion" on each.. because its Saturday.. and I dont feel like writing an essay describing each one's pros/cons. But I'm not a complete **** and I admire that people are putting in the effort. I'd like to point out that I have touched on all of the aspects you note where appropriate.

gord, is that really a professional opinion, or a professional opinion heavily sugar coated by the context?
I would say yes. I have adjusted my opinions to meet the context as explained above.

Kizz, your last few logos remind me of Pepsi.

It's those damn colours we have to stick to!:p

But simplicity is the key here! :)

Here's something interesting I've found on the net when I was researching for creating a logo a while back.

Apple logo, Google logo, BMW Logo, IBM Logo, Yahoo logo, Nike logo, Pepsi Logo, Toyota logo, CocaCola logo, Harley Davidson Logo are some examples of world famous logos. You would definitely want your company logo to stand in line with these famous logos.

What has made these logos so famous?

One thing that is very obvious in these logos is that these logo designs are very simple. No fancy or complex graphic art work done. But yet they are excellent memory triggers.

Elements that help in making Logos famous:

Whether you are planning to operate internationally or want to market your product and services regionally. The elements of designing a logo would remain the same. Let’s take a look at these elements:

* Logo design should be simple and should not create confusion.
* Should follow the designing principles of color, form, consistency and clarity.
* Should be effective in full colors as well as in black and white.
* Should not lose its look and feel if reproduced on different objects.
* Should be able to project company’s image, strength and integrity.

Whether your company belongs to hospitality industry, consumer or industrial good and services industry, Education, Religion, Travel and tourism industry, Estate and property etc. your logo design should contain all the above elements. These elements will help in making your logo stand in line with famous logos.

Some of these look amazing! Even if they aren't "professional" Great Idea to get the community involved, I would have had a go myself if I'd been a little quicker, but now I've seen some of these fantastic designs, I'd feel a little overwhelmed lol
