Moan moan.

you proved him wrong. what was the point of your post out of interest?

Samiones is clearly to get people to step up their efforts and make a logo worthy of such a great compan. why people are complaining what he has said i don't know.

is this competition to replace the logo on the left or the actual text in the middle, or both? if it's to design a new logo people seem to be recreating the logo in the same way as the current text, so it would show as overclockers, only the best as a logo, then next to it, overclockers, only the best...

might be wrong but something to make sure of as wouldn't want people to waste there time.

Alright then some basic constructive comments;

Start with a pen and a blank sheet of paper, write down OcUk in the middle, now do an uncensored brainstorm about them- who are they, what do they do, what do they sell, whats their USP - anything related to the company you can think of. They sell electronics - so write down all the things related to electronics, it's important not to censor anything at this stage.
Once you've done this you should have yourself some ideas if you don't keep goin. Your page(s) should be full of notes, little drawings and such, your mind should be teeming with random bits and bobs. Now you do a bit of research to inform your ideas, look at competitors, what are they offering, what's different about them, do their logos work? If so why? You may think you've already thought about this stuff but it's actually really important to write it down, this process alone will refine your own ideas and your entire process. Now start developing your initial ideas, start sketching up ideas for type, any graphics/marques, start sketching those in with your type, you need to think how this is going to work as a 1 colour image, if it will print well at different resolutions, what's it going to look like on uniforms, as many possible eventualities as you can think of - at this point if you feel you've got a solid idea/concept/type treament you can mock it up on the computer. Through this process you should be constantly evaluating your work, researching, coming up with new ideas. The point of staying away from a computer aslong as possible is that people rely on it to think for them and it does not work anywhere near as fast as your brain. Sketching stuff is a much better way to get ideas down as it removes the brain to visualisation filter than can kill an idea stone dead.

Perhaps its time we left this garbage behind, I don't think anyone is coming out looking any better for it. There have been some highlights to this thread but stuff like this is bogging it down and should be laid to rest.

@ samione, that wasn't so hard was it? That's some pretty useful advice for people not used to designing - I do hope you realise that whatever your intentions were before, it came across as hostile and condescending in its delivery - particularly the mocking images :S

I can't win, I covered it because it's one of the most important parts of the process, people often forget not to censor what they think, however crazy it seems.

After hours and hours doing the above, I came up with this...

OK, so I lied. 5 minutes max :p

Sir Alan Sugar would love you ;)

the P.C. brigade (no pun intended) jump on our countrys flag as a symbol of the BNP

It wasn't that so much as some of the entries do look remarkably similar to the BNPs logo.

It was never a case of 'Union Flag = BNP' but there is the issue that just dropping it inside the letters of OcUK in the same way as the BNP do might create unwelcome connections. As it stands now is fine, as it looks quite different.

I think you've completely misinterpreted the point being made (well, at least the point I made) in your haste to decry 'the PC brigade'.

I actually did do this yesterday but came up with an absolute creative mind block. :(

I agree. imo I think the mods should delete all posts in this thread that do not contain entries or are not directly referring to entries. There's just way too much crap in this thread and I feel sorry for anyone joining the thread at this stage having to trudge through all this nonsense.

Samione those graphics design school procedures are great, but just because that's how you've been taught doesn't mean doing it any other way is wrong. There's no single formulaic way to graphics design, so if people want to make submissions using trial and error methods, why not just leave them be without mocking them and being a sarcastic git?

Most people here don't necessarily want to sit down and sketch out several pages and make a bunch of notes just because your school taught you thats how it should be done. The point of this competition is to get a multitude of different designs from different people, with the sheer number of people on this forum we are bound to encounter some excellent design examples, even if by accident. It's all a bit of casual fun and you're obviously taking this activity far too seriously. Just let it go, you don't have control over anyone else's actions, and they will use their graphics design software however the hell they want. If they look rubbish, then they won't be picked by the judge, simple as.

At what point? If that happens you should try looking for inspiration, even if it's in completely different fields of art/design. Taking a break and doing something completely different and unrelated often helps aswell. I get ideas on the toilet a lot. Particularly doing No2's. No Joke.

@Heofz
You're right there's no formula for design, but there is a thinking process, you learn that the hard way, any designer will tell you the same. If you have a process your work will improve much quicker, you can only go so far with trial and error.

Is that a subtle way of telling us you have **** ideas? ;)

Ah... the thinker. :p

As I mentioned before about the icon logo idea, I couldn't think of a similar idea to represent OcUK that either hadn't been done or wouldn't look incredibly tacky.

I'm sorry, but I'm lolling that most of these entries contain the same colours as the original logo. Be creative people!

"1 - The New Logo must contain the red, white and blue colours that suggest but not necessarily show the Union Jack flag."

There is a reason behind that :p
