How do you rip your Blue-rays, and in which format?

I rip my blu-rays with a program called makemkv. Its free whilst in beta, which it has been for well over a year lol. And it allows you to rip just the film with no loss in quality. The film itself is a 1:1 copy and it also allows you to select which audio source and subtitles you wish to keep. I usually keep the English subs and the HD audio track.

I then store these rips on my microserver where XBMC can pick them up over my gigabit network and stream them to the HTPC. XBMC will also download all the movie info and cover art. The rips aren't small though and a rip of Avatar is 41GB as a file. This is why I have so much storage space. The files themselves are in MKV format and can be played by nearly any media software.

I haven't read a copy of Games Master for about fifteen years LOL don't notice it in shops any more either - good to see it's still going strong :D

And I also am impressed by that monitor - looks awesome!

Unfortunately however, you have your mouse on the wrong side of the keyboard... sort it out lol

I'm so jel.... I want that monitor...

Thank you sir, yes it is quite sexy ;)

I used buy loads of mags, not much need nowadays though......still buy Gamesmaster as its a decent multiformat mag and It's a good read on the bog.

As for the mouse issue and even though I'm right handed, it feels unatural in the right hand! Always been this way since the mid 90's, cursor keys for movement :p

Thanks all for the kind words. Its a 84 inch screen and I love the immersion you get from a good projector and a good sound set up. Nothing beats it. I have a rather expensive taste for good computers and good AV equipment it seems. I just wish it wasn't so expensive :D

Yeah I fell in love with Moon when I saw it at the Odeon a couple of years ago. A great film with a brilliant twist. Loved it!

Out of interest Phil whats the product code of your Hp servers ?

My micro servers are the NL36 variant. There is the later NL40 on the market now and I dont think you can buy the NL36 anymore. The only difference being, the NL40 has a 1.5ghz processor instead of 1.3ghz and also 2gb of ram instead of the 1gb that mine had. It also comes with a 250gb hard drive that you could sell on eBay for around £20 - £25.

Also I have noticed that they are selling for £240 on another retailers site and they also have the £100 cash back offer through HP still going. That means you can have it for £140 once you claim the cash back. My cash back took two months to come through as a cheque. It was a very easy process. If you need to know anything then just ask.

What XBMC addons are you using and what skin? Aeon I presume? Also, how do you make it so that all the movies show as that in the menu?

Mine is an N36L aswell, and it was bought maybe 3 months ago. The 40L wasn't available here and neither was cashback, paid +/-250 for it.. Which is still a bargain compared with most of the 6TB+ NAS systems around. If you want to run WHS2011 on it you would need to upgrade the RAM to 2gb.
The N36L is plenty powerful enough for media use though, I use it for DLNA and storage for an HTPC.

This is my room in the downstairs of the house.

The AV cabinet has PS3 and a HTPC that has XBMC on it for playback of all my Blu-ray rips. I dump all of my Blu-rays in the attic for storage.

Haha yeah that would be awesome. The closest I can get to that is having my girlfriend to bring a nice tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, or a bag of sweat popcorn fresh from the microwave to me. After getting this projector I barely venture to the cinema anymore. I love the fact I can relax on the sofa and just enjoy a good film with no distractions from teenagers and chav's.

I have the Aeon Nox skin running and for the films to display as I have them, you change the viewing mode to infowall.

I still cannot make it look like that. I have changed the skin to the latest version and I am using xbmc beta and enabled infowall but it is still just a list with the filenames and the case picture on the right. How do I make it look like that with the case pictures and the info on the right? Is it an addon?

On viewtype, what do I enable? Just infowall?

As Ezah has mentioned, you need library mode on. My version of XBMC is only version 11 rc2 but I have had it looking like this since 10.1 with the Aeon Nox skin. Also I have no addons and am only running stock XBMC. You can definitely do it, but probably have to play around with the settings a little.

Just moved into a bigger room:

Planning a few more things:
  1. Add a DAC to my Rokit 6 monitors and dedicate them to my PC and mount them onto the wall beside the TV tilted down towards level
  2. Add another 5.1 speaker system (Boston Acoustics Soundware XS) to my amp for Sky/Xbox/WMC, mounted on the walls too
  3. Add an additional 17" Dell E1709W in portrait beside my Dell U2711 and mount them both with a dual-arm
  4. Clean up a few rogue wires
TV is also dead centre to my monitor though it doesn't look it from this angle -.-
