Sorry to jump in, but I answered his question already... you will have a hard time finding them in the shops ;)

custom made speakers are always funky

Muchos Gracias on the respect fellas.

Raikiri is right about the speakers and HTPC case. They're DIY, done by myself.

The temps for the PC are about 60c full load with an E6850 @ 3Ghz. Idle temps are in the mid to high 30's. The two HD3870's reach around 80c full load and mid to low 60's when on the desktop.

Damn ShinOBIWAN those speakers are a work of art :D. How much did they cost you to build them if you dont mind me asking.

Ohhh you just bought them?

Yup! I fired up the PS3 game Uncharted and was blown away, birds flapping about behind me, awesome!

Shall be replaying Crysis! I got a Audigy SE and a Antec P182 today also, the Antec is SO much quieter than my Coolermaster Centurion 5.

Ain't got the Z-5500's positioned properly yet, gonna be mounting the rear and center speakers tonight. :)

The sub is in the middle of the room atm haha, but yes I tried some music and put it on boost 11 and it was great! My leg was shaking.

Really looking forward to mounting and getting them all set up in a bit though, thinking of games to play now with good surround sound!

You did not have the sub on full did you? At that level its so loud you wont be able to tell if the subs bottoming out.

I'd recommend CoD4 and any of the HL2 series. All those particularly impressed me with the work the developers had done on the surround side of things.

Cheers. It was around £4k for the pair of speakers. If you bought something equivalent from a dealer I guess you'd be looking at £20k+. Hi-end hifi is a rip off so that why I build nearly all my own stuff.

Minus the cost of the drivers, building the perfect enclosure for speakers is an exact science and can also depend on your own taste. I will assume he's in the trade and maybe has a degree in sound engineering.

I'd love to do something similar, has always interested me. Anywhere you can point me for info?

Most of the cost is in the drivers. They came to £2.2k. Then about £700 for construction materials such as MDF, plywood, glues, felt, lead sheet, bitumen sheets, foam and bonded acetate fibre. Paints and consumables cost another £500 and finally the miscellaneous bits such as internal cabling, connectors and speaker cable come to £500.

There's more to the speaker than the externals would suggest:

If the mods or other people think this is inappropriate stuff to be posting in this thread please feel free to move or delete as you see fit. A couple of people have asked so I'm happy to show how they were built.

Here's more indepth look at the construction:
