Another IKEA Alex desk. :p

This is a work in progress, I will take more/better photos shortly. Planning to get some larger matching art for the back wall.

Took a bit of a gamble glossing over the wood but I like it.

I'm a big fan of this. Love the colour on that varnished top against the grey on the wall. :)

Could you let me know which work/desk top you went for, and what varnish you used please?

My office is in build at the moment, so looking around for options and this ticks boxes.

Alternatively was looking at sourcing a block of solid walnut and then varnishing that but it's a bit on the steep side at £180-230 a piece...!

How things look in 2016. More clutter added and the VHS is back as I'm transferring all of my old tapes over to file via a aja kona capture card. (The mass of cables behind the desk)

Thanks for the comments.

I purchased a 2m 'prime' oak work top off the bay here:

From what I can work out there aren't any/as many knots in the prime work tops which is true of mine. It did set me back £160 in the end though.

I applied three coats of this straight onto the wood:

Once fully cured you can then buffer the finish for extra shine, believe it or not I haven't actually done this yet, been meaning to get round to doing it!

Edit: took a couple more photos:

Spot on, thanks very much. :D That's not too bad either at 6 hours a coat to dry. Wonder if I could get away with using a rotary polisher to buff it up...?

Thanks for the links and the extra pics, I'll be taking a trip to Ikea in the coming weeks so will get that top ordered and oiled. Pics to follow. :D

Work in progress:p

New build and only just started building my desk. Got a IKEA kitchen worktop that needs cut down to size and two adjustable legs to go on either side. Sadly those Alex drawers were too long to fit in space I had but used another type of drawer which was a perfect fit. Due to width of desk it's going to be quite narrow but nothing I can do about that as the spare bed is in the same room.

@kei
is that a car seat?? lol
Yes that's a car seat mounted onto an ikea gas lift/reclining base. (came from my saab) IMO, more comfortable than any office chair i've sat in. (even the herman miller's in work) Also cost significantly less to build.I prefer no armrests, but I know some would want them. (not that it would be all that hard to retro fit some)

surprised you got that onto a base like that tbh, i though it would be too heavy

looks very comfy though and is definitely different from the usual chairs we see on here :D

Good work, it's one of those rare bargains where you're constantly questionning how you managed to get something so well made for so little. :)

We'll soon see, I'm expecting monitor sag and wobbles for £20 but the majority of the reviews are 4-5 Star and most are saying how robust and sturdy the stand is.

So I'm expecting impressive stuff from Von Haus now.

The worktop plus alex drawers builds ...

What depth do people in general recommend please ?

And is 90mm stave too thick and 45 suffices ?

Many thanks

I've gone 720mm depth, I prefer the extra desk space over the 630mm ones. 900+ seemed a bit excessive.

Not too sure what 90mm staves look like, I went 40mm, I didn't like how thin the 25mm looked, 40mm seemed like the sweet spot.
