So after the failed attempt that was Bleach, I purchased some glossy white spray paint and gave it 2 coats. Probably could have done with a third but the weather wasn't letting up here and I was getting flack for "all my junk" being everywhere.

Happy with the outcome tho.. looks million times better then it did.

I did lose the battle of it being on the desk tho..

Talking of the desk, after talking to the father in law (carpenter) I decided to varnish it instead of oil as others have done and Ikea suggests. Main reason being its a desk, so needs to live up to some potential harsh treatment, and paperwork all over it, which could cause issues with it being oily.

Used an orbital sander with 150 grit to start (very very good sanding to start), gave it 1 coat and let sit for 24 hours. Was still quite rough the next day so gave it the once over with 180 grit followed by another coat... then a few hours later 180 again and a third coat.. followed the next day by a 320 grit and a final coat.

Very nice smooth and quite shiny finish to it now. Happy with it tho!

looks much better now choco, still a slight tint though so would recommend that third coat once we get some dry weather :p

also make sure you keep an eye on it as paint sometimes flakes off and you dont want that getting inside your components and causing damage, but i think you should be fine

Just going off topic for a slight moment as i don't know where else to post this. I cant help notice that so many people have a huge monitor with desks with a depth of only 50mm. My conclusion is you either sit on your expensive bucket chair but arching your back forwards and not using the chair at all properly or you you all have incredibly long arms!

I know as since I've just just changed my monitor from a 17" to 28" my back is killing me and I've spent about a month looking at desks.

I've come to the conclusion, you need a desk depth of at least 70mm to 80mm to sit comfortable to use your keyboard and mouse. a lot of desks on ebay etc are cheap and nasty and most of the 50mm desks that have a pull out keyboard tray don't have space for you to use a mouse.

I'm still in the process of looking for a decent desk. My only issue is, i cant go more than 120mm wide. Most desks that are this wide are only 50mm in depth. So far it looks like i'll be buying this unless something comes up better.

Please feel free to tell me if i'm wrong about sitting so close to a big screen. Its all nice having a great setup (Case, monitor etc ) but the desk is equally important.

I have the IKEA MALM desk, with 3x24" screens for work. That has a 65CM depth. I sit with my legs under and torso as close to the desk as I can for comfort but often feel I am too close.

So yes, I agree with what you are saying.

my desk is about 70-75cm deep but i dont have the monitor all the way to the back like a lot of others do, else i would be force to lean forward to see anything

i think arms length is the general rule for how far your monitor should be

i dont get what you mean by the desk should be deeper than 50cm as surely with a lower depth the monitor would be closer to you anyway?

Thanks for the comments.

I purchased a 2m 'prime' oak work top off the bay here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311526241300

From what I can work out there aren't any/as many knots in the prime work tops which is true of mine. It did set me back £160 in the end though.

I applied three coats of this straight onto the wood:

Once fully cured you can then buffer the finish for extra shine, believe it or not I haven't actually done this yet, been meaning to get round to doing it!

Edit: took a couple more photos:

That desktop looks gorgeous

nice setup Az - not sure if its the camera but the green seems a bit over-done, like theres a green filter on the camera

and get a real keyboard, how do you game with that!! :p

Yeh bounce outs from the dartboard can be a bit emotional lol

The green is a bit more subtle, but yeh gentle green hue all in the room (which is quite small).

My keyboard doesn't get much action, only gaming I do it via the steering wheel :D

As for the chair it is quite firm and the side bolsters on the base don't really hold you in place - not like a race car seat (or my previous seat). But still I quite like it.
