Ratbag, is your computer running Windows?

Yes, it's XP but I'm running Litestep, an alternative shell. It's faster, consumes fewer resources and is generally more streamlined than the explorer shell (at least, once you've got to grips with it). I couldn't be without it now to be honest. If anyones interested they can find out more here.

As a sidenote, I find it bemusing that so many people seem to be using the default XP themes and that changing the wallpaper is the extent of their desktop cusomization. There are so many applications and tweaks that will make you more productive as well as making your desktop more attractive. More linkage.

How hard, and how long does it take to setup Litestep, when i have very little experience in writing themes etc.

You don't need to be able to 'write' themes as there are hodloads of decent themes available at litestep and customize. I'd recommend you stick with one with an explorer style interface (e.g. the default, or the mighty ILG4) for a while before deploying one of the more 'freeform' examples.

im not too scared of completely nackering Windows, since i have lots of upgrades planned soon, for which i'll be formatting my system partition. Main thing i need to know is how long it'll take me to get to a system that works, and then how long to customise it.

There is no chance whatsoever of screwing up your os, despite what certain scaremongering gimps might tell you. Litestep doen't modify any windows files, it is not an OS, it is a shell replacement. In other words it simply presents your current windows environment in a different format (how different is entirely up to the user). I'd recommend you get the installer from here.

It is easy enough to switch back to the standard Explorer shell via the included shell switcher program if you feel the need to.

Feel free to post back if you have any more questions.......

Good luck!
