You can I think use Windowblinds and samurize on 98SE but IMO hogs memory too much. Just pick up a copy of XP Home or something, I think its about £50-60 isnt it?

Just rename the Icon, and then enter a space as the name. To rename the Recycle Bin you will need a reg hack or a program that will do it. I think Powertoys or something will do it.

Just do it twice, 3 times for other shortcuts so there are no duplicates.

if I enter a space as the name it just reverts back to the original name

What do you mean by ALT + 255? type that in as the name? hold down ALT and type 255?

none of those work for me though.

Yes, for shortcuts you need to hit rename and then hold down alt and then type in 255 (on the numpad). Make sure numlock is on
