Deus Ex: New Vision

That's good to hear, its one of the best PC Games ever IMHO, nothing more than a graphic overhaul is all that's needed.

Now ... can anyone get it to work with Vista 64 SP1 on a C2D E8*** series, all latest drivers and updates ETC? Even using compatibility mode for XP and Win98 I cant even get the install to finish, in fact using compatibility mode it wont even start installing, so with native Vista It just stops installing at the final hurdle while decompressing files as I recall, tried leaving it at this stage for about an hour one night but no joy.

I really want to finish this Game, even have my save games from when I last played it over a year ago.

This is the GOTY version BTW.

I just installed GOTY addition on Win 7 7068 x64 yesterday and it worked fine. Are you sure it's not something wrong with your disk?

Is Deus Ex really that good?

I remember having the original as a kid but I don't remember much about the game other than it looked awesome back then.

It does seem somewhat ironic, or even perverse, considering my current rig the last game I bought was Rollercoaster Tycoon. :D

I had this with my copy; I forget how exactly I got it to install in the end, but there is a way. Tried copying the disk contents to a local drive and installing from there?

It didn't really help though because when I had got it installed, when I tried to play it, it kept asking for a disk (which was inserted) and I couldn't find a no-cd crack to remedy the problem.

In the end I just bought it off Steam and it works perfectly. Shame though, because I now have two copies of the game - but since it's the best game ever, that's no real problem :D

Now this is worth a try, once did something like this to the Raven Shield add on Athena Sword disk and it worked.

I'll give this a go later.

Cheers.

C:\DeusEx\System\deusex.ini:
Code:
[Engine.Engine]
GameRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
AudioDevice=Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem
NetworkDevice=IpDrv.TcpNetDriver
DemoRecordingDevice=Engine.DemoRecDriver
Console=Engine.Console
Language=int
GameEngine=DeusEx.DeusExGameEngine
EditorEngine=Editor.EditorEngine
WindowedRenderDevice=SoftDrv.SoftwareRenderDevice
RenderDevice=GlideDrv.GlideRenderDevice
DefaultGame=DeusEx.DeusExGameInfo
DefaultServerGame=DeusEx.DeathMatchGame
ViewportManager=WinDrv.WindowsClient
Render=Render.Render
Input=Extension.InputExt
Canvas=Engine.Canvas
Root=DeusEx.DeusExRootWindow
[size=4][B]CdPath=[/B][/size]
You need to change the bit that says CdPath=driveletter to just CdPath=, as shown above. Game won't need the CD after this.

Seems like an awful lot of work just to pretty up some textures.

It's litteraly overwrite the old textures with the new ones and edit a config file. There's hardly any work involved :D

you obviously arent a deux ex fan, but as one of my favourite games of all time do i dare install this and play again or keep my great memories of the game :confused:

I took the plunge and started playing again today. You can't kid yourself over the engine, it is over a decade old after all. The thing is the attention to detail in the levels, gameplay,dialogue and overall narrative make it well worth the replay.

I'm just about to rescue Gunter on Liberty Island and I've only taken out two guards (non lethal) :cool:.

Well, that never worked either, copied all files from CD to a temp folder, went for the install again and same thing, setup stops responding while de-compressing files, the disc is OK because I've just installed it on my laptop that has XP, but I'd rather play it on this machine.

May have to do a dual boot XP Vista install again.

Excellent :D definitely be reinstalling Deus Ex shortly then.
One of my favourite PC games of all time :)

I know it's a bit of messing about but couldn't you share your Deus Ex folder on your laptop with your network and just copy the game files over that way?

I'm not sure why you're having problems tbh, as I say it's working fine here with Win 7 :(

Yes, but Win 7 > Vista. So is it really that surprising he is having problems? I totally understand. I'm a Vista user myself, some of support for 32bit games and such is poor.

I've had Deus Ex working perfectly on Vista 64 (both with 8800GTS640 and a 4870 1GB) so it's probably something that he's doing wrong rather than anything else.

I actually thought of that too after I posted last night and will be trying that today ... fingers crossed!

There are a lot more variables than that. I've been PC Gaming since 1989 and have a pretty good idea about what I'm doing.

But the above idea sounds like a good one, all the files from the CD seem to get installed, there is no CD access when it starts the final de-compression routine, so its safe to assume those files are already on the comp hard drive (certainly the game is installed and in the registry) so if I copy over the complete game folder from my laptop where it did install OK, then fingers crossed I'll be good to go :)

I've downloaded the texture mod and keen to get playing again and resume where I left off with the game saves I have from last year.

Found out some useful stuff if anyone is interested.

To get the CdPath= no cd setting to work you need to instal the 1112fm patch, even if you're already using the GOTY edition that has it preinstalled. After patching setting the CdPath= to show no drive letter allows you to play without the CD and works flawlessly.

Also, it's probably fairly obvious to some of you guys, but I twigged last night that you can actually do some worthwhile tweaks in Deusex.ini to get the visual quality up a bit. I know this might be redundant information for a lot of people but I'll include it here for the sake of completeness anyway.

First off you really should use the texture mod linked in my OP, not only does it have high res textures but it also includes an updated opengl dll that helps with the IQ.

You wan to load Deus Ex up the first time without making any changes to deusex.ini. If this is your first time running the game then you'll want to pick OpenGL as youer renderer, if it isn't your frist time then you need to open deusex.ini up first and find the [Engine.Engine] line and do the following:
Code:
[Engine.Engine]
GameRenderDevice=[B]OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice[/B]

After this you can start the game.

From the ingame menus set everything to the highest settings you can and then exit the game.

Now you want to open up deusex.ini and find the following bit:

Code:
[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=640
WindowedViewportY=480
WindowedColorBits=32
FullscreenViewportX=[B]1680[/B]
FullscreenViewportY=[B]1050[/B]

It's pretty much self explanatory but the bolded bit is where you can set what resolution you want to use. I've set mine to 1680 x 1050 in here as you can't select that resolution ingame. In the same file you want to find the [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice] section and add changes your settings to reflect the bolded bits:

Code:
[B]UseTrilinear=True[/B]
[B]MaxAnisotropy=16[/B]
SupportsLazyTextures=0
ZRangeHack=False
AAFilterHint=0
NoAATiles=False
[B]NumAASamples=16[/B]
[B]UseAA=True[/B]

The following bit I've nabbed from the widescreen gaming forum with regards to FOVs. You need to open user.ini and find the DesiredFOV= line. This should be set to 75.00000 by default, however you need to change this to reflect your aspect ratio. In my case I've set it to the following, for a 16:10 aspect ratio:
Code:
DesiredFOV=85.2812718522

Here are some settings you can use for other aspect ratios:
16:9=91.3154482287
15:9=87.61661884

I think that about sums it up. Hope it's of use to someone!

And it worked :) Deleted the botched install folder on this machine, copied over the folder from the laptop then a quick ini file edit and its working :cool:

Now to install the mod.

Thanks for the info, have to go out now but was going to ask about a 16:9 fix, will do all this once I'm home.

Very useful information, thank you.

Sorry, my wording was quite bad in my original post. I merely meant to provide a point of reference so you could know that it *is* possible for it to work on Vista64.
