Deus Ex: New Vision

Sorry, my wording was quite bad in my original post. I merely meant to provide a point of reference so you could know that it *is* possible for it to work on Vista64.

No worries mate :)

Anyway, thought I would report back, its all working very well mod wise and looking much crisper, have obviously added the new vision textures as well as the .ini mods for FoV and my resolution of 1920x1200.

One slight problem though, the game runs far too fast, Denton is on steroids all the time it seems!

My machine is actually an E8400 @ 4GHz, 4 GB ram, 2 x HD4870's in Crossfire X, Asus Xonar D2X, Vista 64 SP1, ETC. I seem to recall there was an issue in overspeed on some of the older AMD processors (of all things) in this game and there was a fix for that, and I used to use old dos utility's like slomo or something years ago for issues of older games on fast machines.

Any idea's how to get the game to run at normal speed in Vista?

Almost there now ;)

EDIT : Just tried disabling Crossfire and alt tabbing out and setting affinity for the game to one core, still too fast!

I found the game speed option in the duesex.ini file, have set this to 0.1 now and its still too fast, all the characters are always running too, interestingly using the caps lock key which is the default key for run walk in the game makes me walk too slow, the AI characters still run too fast though, the game speed is seriously messed up.

After some research I've found that when you install Dues Ex it asks the CPU, how fast are you and sets the game to that, so I guess because I installed it on my much slower laptop and copied that folder to this Vista machine is why its acting up?

if only i could just get it to install properly on this machine!

Anyway, I'm tired that's enough for tonight, if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them, am seriously thinking of setting up a Vista XP dual boot now, did have Dues Ex installed on my old E6600 @ 3.6 in XP and it installed and ran fine.

For the game speed thing, try setting the process affinity to a single core.

I did, no Joy :( Its not just the over speed, its the inconstant over speed, in out door area's its like running like a sprinter all the time, in corridors its like running at 200MPH, the game speed really is messed up big time.

I've had another thought though, as well as this GOTY version I also have the standard version, if I can get this to install in Vista on this machine then patch it to latest version it might be OK ... I'll try this later today.

Should I get this game? I missed it the first time round, and I know everyone raves about it, but I'm not sure whether I cba (can be asked) or not.

As above you need to force vertical sync to always on in your drivers control panel. I forgot to include this in my other post.

If you're willing to overlook a somewhat clunky interface and below par (by modern standards) graphics, then it's definitely worth playing. The first level isn't everyone's cup of tea but if you give it a chance, the storyline is very immersive and (for a FPS game) the gameplay is relatively non-linear.

The most similar game in recent times is arguably Bioshock (I notice you've recommended this in another thread), but DX has a lot more depth, variety and is just an all-round better game. It's hard to see how someone who likes BS couldn't enjoy DX.

I've actually went and added XP as dual boot, nearly messed it all up but BCD came to my rescue, still had the problem in XP of the install hanging while de-compressing files even with my non GOTY version of Deus Ex, found out a few others have had this problem and found this on a forum somewhere ...

There are 3 programs it runs that all lock up at the end of installation (I'm in WinXP with no super weird settings, not sure why it does this to only us). To get installation to finish, you have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager and end the programs as they come up. The first is "SystemFiles.exe", followed by "TextureFiles.exe", and finally "MDMaps.exe" (I'm pretty sure that's the order). If you simply end these programs from the process manager, it should install fine and let you play the game.

This worked and it probably would have worked in Vista too, oh well, I've now got XP to choose from again and will try SS2 and its texture mods as well as an Astronomy program that simply does not work in Vista, so it wasn't all a waste of time :)

The game speed is fine as well now using V-Sync, and I'm all modded and tweaked and ready to enjoy.

Thanks to all who helped :)
