Devastated : Go easy what would you do?

Wheel bearings on an e46 require change of the whole hub (or something like that) iirc. I certainly remember paying that much to have one done.

Gosh, really? Even so, eurocarparts has hubs for as low as £40, most expensive is £62. That's a huge labour cost assuming they source similarly priced parts.

Rear backing plates and handbrake shoes (Causing Noise) £265 - Wit? What is actually wrong with the backing plates, why do you need both? If the securing holes are a bit worn a small washer in behind will get you through another year without spending much at all. If the shoes were done last year I don't see them being needed, but if they are it's a cheap part

Bottom pulley is badly worn which could cause the belt to come off and you will then lose power steering on your vehicle. £280 -no, find out which pulley, replace yourself for about £50

Play in N/S/R Wheel bearing £174 -I'm sure I replaced a hub/bearing on mine for about £60

O/S/F Brake pipe corroded £132 ( MOT failure likely ) -how corroded? Has it been rubbed down and greased? If it's really gone this is a decent price

Front anti roll bar link bushes have slight play £90 for the pairdo these if they actually fail an mot yourself for about £30

Front control arm bushes are worn £110 each and these

Bad earth connection on the O/S/R Lamp unit which requires further diagnostics and the air con belt has fallen off. bad earth? Fix it free, belt likewise

Tyres: £170 your own fault

Oil service :£120 no

Battery : £90no, replace when it dies

Oh it's the bi annual easyrider 'my car has some consumables that need replacing and I got a hilarious quote should I scrap it' thread.

Change the oil. Fit a new belt. Get a new wheel bearing and have the handbrake done. Under 500 quid.

Does he ever post anything which isn't either a drama or just out right odd?

What was the sarcasm for? I merely stated some relevant facts that might be useful.

Oil service? It's a 200k mile tatty 13 year old car. It's not going to be sought after on the used market so use this to your advantage and just change the oil yourself (Or for 60 quid at National Tyres if you dont want to).

.

Do they reset the oils service clock thingy

Just rang them they quoted me 48inc:eek:

Depends on if you like the car or not and if it's been reliable while you've owned it.

The wife and I just put about £2k into our 2004 320d.

It was on 144k miles when we picked it up in 2011 and has required nothing other than the usual oil, filters, tyres and brakes since then.

It's been a really reliable car and is now about to hit 210k miles.

The two rear shocks were starting to fail, so had all 4 done rather than just 2.
Exhaust needed replacing, standard with age.
All bushes replaced.
Front lower wishbones (practically a consumable on E46).
Tie-rod ends.
Wheel hubs & bearings.
EGR valve.
Replacement gearbox from low mileage clutch.
Clutch + DMF.

Along with the usual oil, filters, ps fluid, coolant, tyres, glow plugs.

Well worth it... he drives better than he did when we got him and he's done a lot of miles :)

I have a feeling we'll see 300k miles in this car...

I know I'd rather spend £2-3k on a car like that rather than sell it for £500-1000 and take the same money and put it into something worth £3-4k that would be an unknown quantity. Also depends on how much you're wanting to spend on a replacement car.

Ordered 4 tyres

Ordered the blanking plates from BMW (couldn't get them anywhere else)

£14.90 x 2

Ordered the Handbrake shoes and the fitting kit from eurpcarparts

£30.89

Labour cost £165 inc

This gets me back on the road.

Oil change booked at National Tyres for 48inc next week. (need to know how to reset the service thing on the dash)

Surely stuff like tyres and oil shouldnt be a surprise!? Let alone a devastating one. They're standard running costs of any car
