Devastated : Go easy what would you do?

To get the wheel bearing out.

Ask them if they'll change the whole hub instead I guess...

First off I'd get a second opinion from another garage. They don't charge just to inspect it. A local Ford garage wanted £500!! just to change some suspension bushes on my Focus ST mk2. I took it to another Ford garage and they said they were fine. It was completely fine for another year until I sold it and it probably still is.

Some garages try it on, or just don't know what they are talking about.

I'm a bit confused with the Anti roll link bushes?

http://beta.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/...a82653c72b63cf5bdecd13786bae217a833512&000407

Are these the right ones?

Yes that would be them.

They will be in a hanger that is held in by a couple of bolts, you drop the hanger out, slip the new bush on and bolt the hanger back on.

Edit* Sorry i read that wrong, it sounds like they are talking about the ARB drop link. But if you're doing that you might as well buy the arb bushes too. This is what that would be Drop Links

Driving to work yesterday morning heard a massive clunking sound and then what I can only describe as a loud rhythmic grinding noise.

Anyway managed to get to my Indy on the way home.
Sounds like someone is trying to shaft you.
And just had an email:

Rear backing plates and handbrake shoes (Causing Noise) £265
Bend the backing plate back, or get one at a scrappy. Also handbrake shoes? How ? They last a car lifetime unless you've been driving around with handbrake pulled.

Bottom pulley is badly worn which could cause the belt to come off and you will then lose power steering on your vehicle. £280
Ohnoes!
Wait until it breaks, and get the pump+pulley from scrappy then, or get the part already and standby for when it goes.
Play in N/S/R Wheel bearing £174
Fairish price, but have you double checked this yourself? You'd have heard this long before it has excessive play.

O/S/F Brake pipe corroded £132 ( MOT failure likely )
Sand corrosion, anti rust primer, motip bitumen spray.

Front anti roll bar link bushes have slight play £90 for the pair
Price is fairish if you include labour, but also double check this yourself. Not sure if it's an MOT point, but a car can manage without these, and can manage with play in them, I have removed the whole anti roll/stabilization bar from some cars (eg. the Corolla) in the past to get past an MOT :o.

Front control arm bushes are worn £110 each
Again check this yourself. Price sounds a bit steep ish, but BMW parts may be more expensive than I'm used to.
Bad earth connection on the O/S/R Lamp unit which requires further diagnostics and the air con belt has fallen off.
Further diagnosis, what further diagnosis, when in doubt attach a new earth...

Air con belt is what, a tenner if the old one's broken, if it's still in ok shape just reattach it yourself or leave it altogether.
3
Tyres: £170
25 fitted+balanced per tyre at scrappy.

Oil service :£120
Idiots, oil is 4 tenners tops ( 2 tenners for generic 5w30/5w40 oil, 35 ish for castrol edge 5w30) and filter is 1-2 tenners. No way an oil service takes 60 quid/an hour of work, especially in a garage.

Battery : £90
2 tenners at scrappy for a 80aH battery, and they usually give some limited warranty (eg. 3 months, enough time to test if the battery is good or rubbish). I wouldn't change it at all tho if you have no problems... What nonsense, replace battery when it goes bad, not before.
What are my options?

Cheers
Sounds like the indy is taking the ****, you'd have to drive like an idiot (hitting kerbs or potholes daily) to wear out all that...

All the bearings and bushes are easy to check yourself.

1500 quid is new (used) engine + gearbox money, not some simple work on some bushes and worn parts/regular maintenance.

If you have two left hands and have no experience with working on the car, get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. Your garage is most probably taking the ****, like most of those ****s do. Shady morons.

I've been told in this thread the E46 its a common fault..

I'll wait.

Is it labour that's costing the coin here?

Sand corrosion, anti rust primer, motip bitumen spray..

I'll address this if it or when it fails its MOT

I'll ask for a quote for labour

If the lights work sod it..

I'll research in how to do this myself...Fox is noob and he says he could do it.

25 fitted per tyre at scrappy..
Tyres ordered from Camskill.

Idiots, oil is 4 tenners tops and filter is 1-2 tenners. No way an oil service takes 60 quid/an hour of work, especially in a garage..

48 quid at nation tyres. Booked in for next week.

I'm a noob with mechanical things..I'm not embarrassed to admit it.

Fair enough, then get a 2nd or 3rd opinion elsewhere.

Garages prey on people who have no idea about mechanics. Most garages/mehcanics are absolute scum, scamming people who don't know about their cars for repairs they don't need, or worse charging them for work that never happened (as wasn't needed).

You should also ask your indy garage to SHOW you the problems.

It took me more than 10 garages until I gave up on them altogether, I just do all the work myself now, get my MOT at neutural garages (ones that only do MOT's and no repairs, so they aren't unfair by lying something needs to be done as it's not in their interest), and I have a mechanic friend to help me for more complex stuff (eg. gearbox replacement, timing belt, get the head off). Any random garage around here is trying to shaft you, one actually told me to replace my brake discs when they were only 6 months old while I came in just to get alignment done .

Not sure that hub has a bearing? (EDIT : first time i clicked the 1st link it didn't go to the bearing page)

They often quote ''safe'' numbers labour wise for if they cannot get some bolts off or get any problems, or have no clue how to do it.

A few years ago I removed my whole hub + bearing and took it to a garage and asked them to just swap the bearing for a new one (which I also supplied), after half a day I got a phone call they can't do it as they lack the ''special'' tools to get an ABS ring off.

What morons, I got the ring off myself in my garden in 5 mins using a chisel + hammer. Then returned, after which they still charged me for 30 mins of work for something that could be done in 5 with the correct tools (pulling the bearing off and getting the new one on)
