Diablo III to Require Constant Internet Connection

There won't be, as your character is held on the battle.net servers.

It isn't really pointless, and it's not even strictly drm, they are handling the game like an MMO.

Show me any mmo that lets you play without logging in and being online?

I usually don't agree with 'constant connection', but in this case it does make sense.

Diablo 3 isn't a MMO.

I cant see why playing an RPG in single player and using cheats if you want to is a problem.

Theres no such thing as 'hacking' in a single player game, no one else is affected if you uses cheats.

Requiring constant internet connection and having to play online is a massive fail for what this game should have been.

Was expecting something like this. For me i'll just treat it like another MMO but without the monthly fee - if it keeps it more secure - no probs at all.

This isn't a gamebreaker to me as it seems to be for some people. I'm still getting it, as I trust Blizzard to do a fantastic job on the game itself, but a simple offline mode would be preferred.

That's the entire point. You can't, and they don't want you to use an offline character online due to the potential of character hacking and item spawning, which was rife in D2.

I thought you couldn't do that anyway on Diablo 2, well you could Direct IP to someone and play with an offline character, but once you go into battle.net you had to make a new one? Unless I'm missing something, it's been very long since I played it xD.

It really is a non-issue. The game practically is an MMO anyway, online co op play, check, quests, check, item trading, check, leveling, check, etc etc.

That'd surley then make games like Borderlands "practically an mmo" O.o. And that you can use offline characters online xD. But no, it's not an mmo.

A much better statement would probably be just saying that Diablo 3 has a much larger online presence now than it's predecessors did. Which I don't mind as that's opened up some interesting things.

I'm also aware now that most people who play this will have a constant internet connection at home, won't be a problem. Some people don't or their connections are unreliable... but you really shouldn't need to force people to be online if they want to play offline. Don't get me wrong I understand the benefits of it being online, I just think that it could have been done differently. Maybe. Who knows.

Implementing online only to stop piracy and screw over customers = bad.

Implementing online only to integrate the core of the game with online features = not so bad. I'm all for this treating it like an MMO if it allows them to prevent people from cheating with their chars and making new weapons out of thin air. All the best stuff I did in D2 I did online with mates.

Having to reroll to play on battle.net after SP was something I didn't like with D2, glad that's sorted too.

Diablo 2 required an always-on internet connection, well, the way I played it it did anyway ;)

(Yes I realise it didn't, but I never played offline, so this has zero relevance to me. Unlike when single player games are made to require a connection.)

This.

It's a multiplayer game in my eyes so its a non-issue.

I dont see why people care so much... everyone in the entire world has broadband, lans have zero reason to exist any more considering we get a ping of like 15 in online games these days

It's a shame there is not an offline mode but hey, whatever I guess.

Would be nice to be able to rock some D3 while on an aircraft/travelling etc. But it's not like that is the norm.

Not bothered. Not interested in single player, but very interested in coop.

Would be cool to play offline though, say on a laptop on a long boring plane journey. Oh well...

meh whats the problem its just like b.net in sc2 - and for the record i see zero problem with ubisofts protection methods either.
its just people getting bent out of shape for the sake of it.

Yeah that's right, I was just looking for a reason not to buy a game I was looking forward to.

So playing solo will mean server lag? I think I will pass this over.

Congratulations on winning the not understanding prize.

Of course you won't get lag playing SP, you're authenticating your characters and items with a server, not connecting to a dedicated server per player.

Co-op isn't going to have dedis is it?

I have had a constant internet connection since I first got broadband (if you can call it that at 512kb back then) since 2005. For me Unbisoft DRM has been fine, apart from the couple of times I got a DC when playing AC2, so I don't see it being a problem for me with Diablo 3.
I can see why people are a bit upset though with ubisoft DRM, as it only really effects legit gamers because the DRM is cracked quickly anyway.
