Diablo III to Require Constant Internet Connection

yep, although it will be amusing if/when someone ddos the auth servers like the have done with ubi's system and all the legit people can't play the game.

The auth servers that will almost certainly be hosted along with all the wow servers?

I'd think it would take a much stronger botnet than the one Lulzsec were using. When asked they refused to go after WoW. Have there been any WoW outages confirmed as caused by DDoS attacks?

I know several of the dodgy pirate servers have been done. I don't ever recall it happening to Blizzard though. I can't see it being worth the time of anyone with the strength to do it. :p

lulz sec didn't do it it was long before them

And why do you think they'd use wow player servers to host authentication?

Ubisoft has lots of experience with launching games with always on-line DRM yet as i recall every single one has had massive problem at launch.

same as steam has lots of experience launching massive titles yet they always get hammered on launch day.

Just because they know it's likely doesn't mean they'll waste the extra 10k + to cope with it.

they certainly don't have the cover for the super peak user counts for wow patches / addons

edit: and tbf i see there reason for it its gonna be a lot of investment for hardware that will only be used a few times a year

So say if i make a character online and i fancy playing by myself i can make a server myself and password it so people cant join?

assuming similar system to DII (this'll be on the version 2 of battle net) yes.

sc2 certainly supports passworded games on battlenet 2.0

I didn't mean it was them that would do it, they're just the latest group to go after games companies they dislike, I used them as an example.

I didn't say they would. I said they'd host them alongside wow servers, in their data centers. Along with all their existing security.

I'm pretty sure Ubisofts data centers aren't a patch on the ones that run the worlds largest MMORPG somehow.

The statistic behind the hardware it takes to run WoW speak for themselves imo, they're staggering.

Steam slows down certainly, but it rarely grinds to a halt for an extended period of time. :) Different kettle of fish though.

I suspect you won't need a password. You'll be able to set your invite settings up with something like "Anyone can join/Friends can join/Invite only".

different kettle of fish though isn't it, the wow servers are obviously very high end and expensive but they aren't the same spec as the auth servers, would be like using an articulated lorry to do your weekend shopping.

Does on the big releases.

The auth servers are the ones that probably see the most traffic though. Every user has to go through them to log on whilst the individual realm servers have a much ligther user base.

Not to mention that most of the DDOS groups are all WoW addicts anyway and will be too busy playing Diablo to try and bring it down. :D

I'd be amazed if they were much different actually. They'll all be IBM blades or something, some will have more grunt than others. They don't use recycled P4s machines from their offices with a few hundred k of ram for auth servers. :p

But that's all irrelevant to a DDoS attack. I'd be amazed if it got through to individual servers and past all the security they'll have in place.

I don't remember Steam going stone cold dead on a new release for a while, and never for an extended period of time for release in recent time.

It doesn't have to be for an extended period of time. If you lose connection for a moment, that's it, you're dumped out of the game.

Look at steam during sale time - how the servers grind to a halt, and act erratically sometimes for over an hour.

Blizzard's servers went down during a starcraft convention. The Wow servers are strained, with players not being able to get in game, during any big launch. These things happen - no system is perfect.

This shouldn't have to be the case when playing as a single player game.

I just think it's another way for big companies to see what you are upto and invading your personal life!!

Is there a 'conspiracy theory' thread?
