Did CERN just break physics?

Question for you physicians out there:

I was under the impression that the speed of light could not be broken by a moving "object"? Was this not the case?

If so, has this experiment (whose results have now been replicated) not broken that theory?

Yes I think. I don't know much more than that but if confirmed by the community, it breaks what we think is happening. Significantly. If we don't find the higs particle, which some people say is likely, then that also will turn everything on its head. I'm no scientist however.

Not necessarily, one explanation could be that neutrino uses other dimensions to cheat and get to the desired place faster. Thus current laws still apply.
 
I thought lightspeed had already been disproved, theoretically at least? We can only see to the 'light horizon' no matter how powerful our telescopes are. After that there is just blackness due to galaxies moving away from us at a faster rate than the time it takes for the light from those galaxies to reach us.
 
I had to listen to a colleague tell me he had found several mistakes in their workings recently. I did my best to keep a straight face and nod. He is an engineer though :p
 
Its called progress people

you make up a set of rules which fit what you observe and you test it. One leap forwards in science and now we break that rule - so we test and retest until we make up a new rule from the new observations

Its just that this set we have with SR and the speed of light probably fits most things - there are some subatomic particles that are theoretical - until we detect them and see what properties they have we cannot fully write the rules around these and therefore do not have the whole picture.

Seriously a few years ago the planet was flat and that was a fact - anyone disputing it would be burned.......
 
Currently, my lecturers are completely sure that at some point they will find a mistake in the findings (cambridge), i'm not sure if this latest news will have an effect on that, but it really does destroy a lot of ideas about physics/ equations

This.

There are theories that allow FTL travel that still keep the current laws intact.

Also, afaik the maths shows an object with mass cannot cross the 'threshold' of the speed of light, but there is nothing stopping it have a faster speed if it is initially created when already past the threshold.

I'm glad it has not been discounted from a simple error (as originally thought by a lot of people).

Interesting times.
 
It's interesting that less than 100 years ago, we were talking about propelling an object (aircraft), faster than the speed of sound. I'm sure back then, many would've thought that breaking the sound barrier was nigh on impossible.

In 2011, we are now looking at the concept of breaking the speed of light.

In theory, if the speed of light is breached...time travel begins to come into play.

Here's a question: do you think the human race will ever develop time travel and if so, would we not currently have (in 2011), time travellers, visiting us?
 
It's been said that time travel is only possible (naturally) in one direction, forwards. There is a theory to travel back in time though, you'd have to create a time machine that stays "open" and you could only go back in time to the point the machine was turned on.

We might be able to harness the power required to shift things at near light speed but the Universe has the capability to do that anyway (a singularity, and if the CERN results are verified, then ghost particles as well which are all around the Universe!).

Harnessing that available power instead of having to create it from scratch would be the ideal way forward - Long ways to go though :p

Outside of Hollywood, this theory doesn't make no sense to me.
