Diet coke

I used to drink a lot of diet coke as a kid. Kept getting recurrant headaches though. Someone suggested it might be aspartame so I cut it out. The headaches stopped pretty quickly and I've never suffered from regular headaches again.

It really annoys me that it's in loads of non-diet stuff though. I have to keep an eye on labels and I think I have a really low tolerance to it.

There is no proof that the aspartame was causing the headaches, it could have been the caffeine or something else

Correct, it was an assumption. However - I drink far more coffee than is good for me and it doesn't give me headaches. I can drink litres of normal coke (I'd rather not though) and it doesn't give me headaches. I've had the occasional 'accident' and started having the odd drink with aspartame in and got headaches later. In short, I think it's a pretty safe assumption.

I know I can have a little aspartame without a reaction. I don't know what my threshold level is, so I try to stay away.

Don't like the taste of aspartame anyway so I have no reason to drink it.

Edit: and on the teeth thing, both normal and diet coke contain phosphoric acid, which is not a good thing either.

I think the problem is that some people hear from somebody else that something may be bad for them but there is little or no evidence, then when they feel slightly better it's becomes a case of "well it must have been the <insert additive here>"
This then gets spread around and everybody hears how such and such was ill because of aspartame for example then the cycle repeats.

Same as with MSG

Mmm... MSG, I like that stuff.

Caramel (as in artificial colouring) however... Can't stand the stuff. Deadens the taste buds for hours.

Anyway what problem could there possibly be with non-consumption of diet coke? I'm really glad I stopped. Still have all my teeth. No fillings either.

Exactly - and to answer your earlier point - as you might expect, there is no reason to believe that aspartame is bad for you, at least without consuming massive dosages.

Some people really need to get out more,

I drank sprite yesterday... the texture is much different to coke I wasnt impressed

Brushing after a swig of Coke is one of the worst times someone could brush. Coke is essentially acid. (carbonated anything, is acid) So what someone would be doing is brushing and rubbing acid into their teeth. The best time to drink carbonated drinks if one must, is to do it at meal times, the body's natural saliva etc helps to protect the mouth.

Indeed, I was gonna say this. You shouldn't brush your teeth straight after eating food either, for much the same reason. Re colas being damaging to teeth, if possible I will drink some water after consuming any carbonated drink to hopefully neutralise the acid on my teeth. I don't know if it works but my teeth are in pretty good shape, touch wood.

By the way, I love Diet Coke, I prefer its taste to regular Coke. I am concerned by health scares about Aspartame though, but whether those scares are well founded or not, I don't know.

There is an alternative sweetner which is said to be safer, namely Sucralose/Splenda, but it isn't in common use in diet colas in the UK. One which has it is Tesco Premium Cola but you can't get that in cans which I prefer.

I've been drinking the diet & caffeine free coke for years and the real stuff is too sweet for me.
I absolutely love the taste of it and always have a good burp after.

I've moved over to the "Zero" and "Free" drinks entirely - because of tha calorie and sugar levels.

I am not going to pretend that they taste the same - no matter what people say only sugar actually tastes like sugar.
However the taste is still good and I know I'm not pouring liquid sugar down my throat.

Coke Zero - Love it, alas because of my current kidney issues I have to very much limit myself on this.
Sprite Zero - Another good one, probably the one I drink most of.
Orange Fanta Zero - Not my favourite Zero, but certainly drinkable and makes a change.
Tango Free - Yer, really not too bad
7up Free - Actually over-done the sweateners on this one
Dr. Pepper - Zero, regular are both vile.

Diet coke i find much nicer than its regular brother.

Its "thinner" more watery taste i find more refreshing, Its liek drinking a regular coke that all the ice cubes have melted in.

However i don't like using diet as a mixer cos the whole ice/watered down thing goes too far.

I'd drink any Coke (Diet / Normal) or Pepsi (though pepsi Max is my favourite). However, I choose not to usually, due to it being generally unhealthy.

Aspartame is bad, sugar is bad, as long as it's in moderation it's ok. I'll have maybe two glasses of coke a week at most, the rest of the time I drink water and I feel all the much better for it too! :)
