228161 signatures on the petition now! I'm still going strong on my boycott :D but noticed a decidedly low number of players on COD4 last night :( Had to play in a US S&D after 11pm  yuck 150 ping!

Well, all the protesters do have to admit, they eliminated cracked servers and online gaming with illegal copies.

People have found ways to rig up dedicated servers with MW2, So chances are online play with pirated copies of the game is possible.

Ya rly

"allows PC users to run their own dedicated servers to host multiplayer and LAN games"
"==Support==
Spec Ops Coop Play"

It's pretty much still player hosted, it's just a way to get some MP elements working without using IWNet, it's not a dedicated server solution in the true sense of having a dedicated box on a proper connection running backend software.

There is evidently massive confusion about what a dedicated server is, what it constitutes and why the removal of them was a problem.

Please explain as that sounds totally ridiculous to me.

You are saying everyone who signed the protest plays pirated games?

BTW i am not backing cracked servers, i think GSP's should be held responsible for policing their servers and stopping people from running cracked servers.

And if IW were so confident of their IWNET a MP demo should have been available, hell, it going through Steam meant they could have had a 48 hour demo period for all to try it, thing is, compared to the options available from a dedi server list its pants. And now i have had chance to "try" it, i am happy with my decision not to buy it.

I think you misunderstand him, he is saying regardless of anything else that IW may or may not have done, they have made it "impossible" to play online with a cracked game, therefore somewhat a victory for them against pirates.

I don't think he intended any offence at all :)

Ahh, IW have eliminated cracked servers and pirate games, well, it's not quite eliminated it, but yes i would say made it harder for people, but that is no reason or excuse to strip the matchmaking or lobby system to the degree that they have?

actually pirates managed to play though iw net for a while.

although they patched that exploit out no doubt another will be made.

... and then that will be patched out again lol... I would just rather buy the game if I cared that bad than having to faff around only being able to play for a couple of days then waiting weeks till the next time..if at all

It's only player hosted if someone chooses to run it on their own computer, there's nothing stopping it from being run on a proper server. So yes, it is a dedicated server solution.

And how many people do you reckon are going to do that in a proper datacentre type situation with a proper connection that gives you all the benefits of a DS that are currently missing?

From what I can see it only supports Spec Ops mode anyway.

It's not exactly a 'woop 32 man dedicated lads, lets pile in' solution is it?

The ability to play Spec Ops without using IWNet is a far cry from a proper MP client server set up.

edit - the trouble is, everyone is so desperate for dedicated servers to come along and 'stick it to IW' that any little thing, no matter how related or unrelated it may be is getting hailed as 'MW2 GETS DEDICATED SERVERS', even when it's just a YouTube video of someone who has unlocked the console and turned gravity down.

Yes.

There is no solution as easy as it was in CoD4, with MW2 you have to unlock the console, blah, blah, blah....

And due for release this coming Monday from the whispers i have heard.

Unless it's auto updating, all IW has to do is release another "patch" and it's over, again.

I highly doubt the people who play a cracked version are there to play a decent honest game. Right next to the cracks are the wall hacks, aimbots etc. Youre actually paying to be their fun for a couple of days. Theyre not upset when its patched theyre off doing something else and keeping half an eye out for another exploit to do the same thing over again in a couple of weeks.
