Pretty sure hosting locally on L4D doesnt create a P2P connection, more a simple Listen server ? Everytime ive done it with friends on custom maps, its been pretty lag free according to them :) Although doing the Listen Server method for a 16 man game would be awful.

Its very true. As usual Valve are doing everything right and showing other developers a way of creating a platform to sell games to ensure both there own and other developers games are not pirated whilst offering savings and deals to the consumer to ensure the consumer gets what they want.
Oh and then on top of that they are developing absolutely top notch games.

L4D has greater sales than Sins of a Solar Empire (which is also using a platform) and that has confirmed sales of over 500,000 units. I would say L4D has double those figures, so Valve are quietly laughing behind the closed doors of there riches whilst other developers announce the end of PC gaming and go off to mine some other resource dry.

Listen server is P2P, that's what they mean by P2P.

I thought P2P was where everyone connected to each other and the load is shared, and a listen server was where everyone connects to 1 guy whose computer deals with all network traffic ?

under illusion that no dedis will be limited to MW2?? other software houses are no doubt monitering what happens here. This is from www.pczone.co.uk and an interview with the producers of Aliens V Predator. By the waythis is how you avoid answering a direct question ;)

There's been a lot of controversy this month surrounding Modern Warfare 2 and its ditching of PC dedicated servers. Historically AvP is obviously a big PC game. How are you making sure you support the PC version and keep your community happy?

Brickley: This is a title that we want to support for a long time to come. If it's not been announced yet then certainly the PC version will benefit from Direct X 11 features. That's one thing we can use to make sure that people who invest in the hardware will get the absolute best.

And it was originally a PC title so you can imagine the heritage and the need within Rebellion itself to make sure that people who still play and talk of that game are not left behind.

And are you guys going to have those dedicated servers the community so clearly expects?

Brickley: Well the one thing we can say is obviously running an operation like that is monumentally expensive. For the period the original was up, people who played that game got an incredible experience.

You know what the internet's like. We're obviously used to getting things for free over the years. I guess on our side the thing we're focusing on is whatever your set-up at home, you get the best possible experience from it. We're just trying to use our time and resources wisely.

So is that a yes or a no on the dedicated servers?

Brickley: As I said the game is still quite a way from release so I guess there are other things to be determined during that time.

thanks ill just go buy a console now :(

if avp is the same shizzle then that is my gaming basically buggered for the next yr !

might aswell go full retard and join all the harry potter wow nabs :(:D

Brickley interview

What a politician that man is eh? Whats the point in going to an interview to say "oh we haven't decided anything yet"

They could have made a huge publicity coup out of this, plugged their dedicated servers for all they're worth, blather on about 'supporting the PC community' and they'd have got loads of support and extra pre-orders for AvP when its due for release.

Instead he's basically said "we'll do whatever costs us the least".

Shameful, truly shameful. If I was his boss I'd sack him. Monumentally expensive my aunt's little finger!

Eh?
They dont pay for the dedi servers!
As a clan, we lease servers from a company that buys the rights to host them (In the cast of CoD4 and BF series anyway). In which case, it costs US money, but not them. I really fail to see the logic there. Obviously they paid for servers as it is a beta, but that would not happen when it is released surely? Or are they talking in console-esque?

They're talking *words im not allowed to write on this forum*

He's probably a marketing guy, who has no technical clue whatsoever.

*Edit - Leet post!! Post number 1337 :D :D :D

I have to agree with the viewpoint that, while the removal of dedicated servers and modding tools is bad, the attitude many have that 'we're now justified in pirating it' is just utter dross. If you don't like it then don't buy it, fine, it's what i'll be doing, but spouting this drivel about now being allowed to break the law because it doesn't have the feature set you wanted is just childish.

I don't even care if people DO pirate it, what annoys me is those trying to hold the moral high ground when doing so. You're breaking the law, it's wrong, the fact it doesn't have dedicated servers doesn't make it right.

I agree. I'm very disappointed in the decision made, and whilst I don't care about the law in regards pirating this, its the fact that people are not realising that they ARE stealing stuff. People have put forth an immense effort for this game, and if you play it and could have afforded it, then you HAVE deprived some one of cash, whether or not you think they should have it or even care about it.

Gutted!

I have been looking forward to this game and so have many of my friends.

Still playing coduo, cod4 and good ol BF2 waiting for a new FPS.

So.......I have cancelled my pre-order and so have my friends...Sick of games being 'consoled' and dumbed down.

I know we all **** off EA but i have never known a game company like them release a patch like 1.50 after 4 years! Servers are still full all over the world on BF2 every night......i find this amazing that they ignore this

However PC games are about £25 - £35 on launch but go down after a short period, but look at the prices of console games and the fact that there SHOULD be no hardware issues whereas PC's have almost infinite configurations blah blah blah...

Do the sums and its an easy choice i guess.

Roll on BF3!!!..

What a dissapointment!

Cant post on the iw forums as the registration server is down lol

Seems Amazon doctored all the reviews, and even the discussion threads, but forgot to alter the tags customers had associated with the game.

Whoops.

Edit: The expanded comments are definitely worth a browse. I'm particularly fond of 'shafted online pc gaming community' and 'liars'

yep just had a look at dissapointing tag one person saying ;

170+ one star reviews were here this afternoon. Now, they've all been deleted, no doubt at the behest of Activision. Shame on you Amazon- you tried to pull this stunt with Spore and were forced to put them back. I suggest you do the same here before you get embroiled in the boycott.

wow
