Digital Identity

Yeh, but you can’t use anything that requires ID until the new one comes.

Same principle with having a digital ID except hopefully it would be cross platform so all wouldn’t be lost.
If I lost my passport I would use my driving license as Id until the new passport arrived.
If I lost my driving license I would use my passport as Id until the new one arrived.

I'm sure that Dido Harding and Fujitsu are ready and willing to work on a 50 billion pound project to create a single digital id for all uk citizens that shall make it trivial for every schoolboy hacker to hijack your life.

I agree we need some form of ID.

But I don't agree in a digital ID were all the information is stored on a device on us. That would be a security risk.

We have business/political people talking about computer tech they know nothing about.

I thought you were trying to make some kind of contrary point here very badly, which is why I dismissed it.

No not at all I’m bringing up points. A central ID system with all eggs in your basket if the phones lost or stolen how would someone access their details for verification. Without buying a new device at the cost of lots of money.

Unless cards can be ordered with a quick delivery times as a backup.

Just microchip people, would take a while, but once the majority are done you microchip babies and immigrants, (legal ones....), as they arrive. Simple... To get a microchip as an existing citizen you need some pretty incontrovertible paper ID of course. Short of an at shoulder head amputation it would be remarkably careless to lose your ID, and in that situation you ain't going to be worried anyway.

This topic seems to have popped up again recently.

Here is just one article about it...

I really see a need for companies to be to identify customers when they are paying for goods, logging in to accounts and so on.

There is a huge problem with identity theft at the moment and companies are becoming bogged down with security, not to mention the fact that customers are having to jump through more and more hoops to try to keep them satisfied. The number of security questions and steps is getting ridiculous.

As I recently found out, it can be a major inconvenience trying to prove who you are, and heaven help you if your passport has expired and the photo on your driving licence is out of date!

ID cards don't fulfil that need. The companies themselves seem unwilling to act. Much as though I am a huge fan of privacy, I do see the need for a digital ID.

What are your thoughts?
A free digital ID that allow people to vote at the same bloody time, that solves any ******** issues the current Tory's have with the poor. It could be universal, alow age restrictions to be easily enforced etc.
I think it is an excellent idea, as long as it is administered correctly, and efficiently.

There’s already digital ID apps. We could use them if the gov approves that they can be used but I assume they would have to be audited first.

Sweden does like a digital id, heavily linked to your "personal number" which is used for tax purposes and these days almost everything on and offline. Not compulsory but good luck negotiating a life in Sweden in 2023 without it.....
Its become so mainstream even since i moved here.. launched in 2003 and mobile ID in 2011 apparently but.....
As a libertarian I am against it for several reasons:

1) Most systems that governments have introduced have been insecure and inefficient. There is a big chance this will go wrong, be a waste of money or have unintended consequences.
2) It gives criminals a single place for identity theft.
3) It gives unfriendly states an easy target to cause chaos here.
4) Governments have shown they love taking more and more control. Once implemented, the need to use it will gradually increase over time. It will be like a wedge to open the door. At some point in the future you will need to register your online Id for every purchase including travel, food, everything. We simply don't know what future governments will do with it. A far left or far right government could use it to control dissent in a similar way to the Chinese use their social credit score to prevent unfavourable people moving around.

Put simply I don't trust the government (this or future ones). Large companies and the government already do a good job of knowing who I am. So I don't see the benefit of this system apart from a very small extra convenience at the risk of some very big issues.
good points

1) A UK problem :p
2) BankID fraud is common and tricking unsavvy people to approve transactions and transfers of money is so common.. I dont know the cost but i imagine its huge.
3) I guess....
4) Yes it could certainly be used for that, if Sweden gets a government where that is their goal.... well it could happen.. At least they can control your money supply incredibly easy. However i dont think this is a worry for most normal people. Normal not meaning your opinion is not, just i think its extremely exaggerated, but yes hypothetically possible.

I’ve just thought of something, if the UK implemented something where by to do things you need a digital ID for verification it would literally force everyone to get it with no choice. Like a a switch on/over date for everything.

Example - Mortgage, Rent, Phone Contract, Passport, Goods and Services for ID check - then it would be impossible to live in a good state without one.

I'm surprised Labour are supporting it since it should cut down on voter fraud.

Anyways, I don't see it as much different than we already have since most citizens have a driving licence, passport, bus pass etc. Providing the digital ID embraces best in class technology to guard against forgery then in theory it could replace a driving licence or a driving licence could piggy back off of it. Our latest notification for local elections in May already state that you will need a form of acceptable ID or apply for a voting ID certificate. The problem will come from issuing a whole nation with a digital ID in ensuring their issue is strictly controlled to not make someone without legitamacy to be here, to gain such.
