Dipped head lights question

In several places in the world it is a legal requirement to have your lights on all the time: day and night. My understanding is that this came from a study in Alberta in Canada which found that accident rates were cut when all cars had lights on 24/7.

I leave my lights on for 2 reasons:

1. They go off when the engine stops, so I can never forget to turn them off.
2. I haven't had anyone try to pull out in front of me, or just generally not see me, when my lights are on.

I was watching Grand Designs the other night and they were saying that on a cloudy day natural light is about 10,000W, and on a sunny day its 100,000W, so having dipped beams on in the day is a bit like peeing in the rain when it comes to dazzling people.

never use sidelights, mainly because they are illegal in belgium, where i do most of my driving
people who get dazzled by headlights in the day are talking out of their arses.
you do realise you're not supposed to look directly into headlights?!
i still do it out of habit, but it's hardly their fault :p

and yeh, in most of eastern europe, it is compulsory to have your headlights on at all times from october to march i think?

I drive with dipped beams on when it is grey/dull to try and make myself a bit more visible.

Don’t think I’ve ever been dazzled by dipped beams in daylight

Mine are automatic as well - really is great to not have to worry about it. They always come on when they need to - same with my wipers \o/ Only problem is the lights sometimes come on a little too early in my opinion and occasionally don't actually go off if it becomes sunny :) Always use dipped ones too which are brighter than standard due to the Xenon gas.

Some people have flashed me and I've always wondered why but they are not out of alignment - possibly some people feel they are too bright and assume I may have full beam on?

Remotely gloomy and the sidelights go on, any worse and the lights go on. I love the dash when its all lit up too though :p

Same.

No idea why, sidelights don't really make the slightest difference.

I do think they make my car look sportier from the rear though. Yes I know, I fail :(
