DirectX 10

dont think so, will probly be the next gen after 7900 or maybe the next gen after that but i am quite sure 7900 doesnot support dx10

Windows Vista is releasing in the winter and they say you will need DirectX 10 to stay on top of the latest games. Like Halo 2 for example.

I think the graphics cards on the horizon will support DirectX 10 and have Shader Model 4.0 implementation. There are none right now that do this. I'm not upgrading for a good year or so.

Then i guess a lot of game companys are going to go bust then.If that was true

Unless you want microsofts halo 2 game.(if rumors are to be belived.)
Halo one ran like a bag of rubbish on the pc anyway..So i can't see halo2 being much better.

I got a beta version of windows vista and it runs on x850xt and runs games fine, and gets a nice score in 3dmark03 (considering it wont install my gfx drivers, silly beta software) so i dont see why someone would need new hardware to run vista and games?

The G80 will support DX10 but will probably suck at DX9 and below.

Sorry, but to me this makes no sense?

How can a brand new card, faster than anything previously made, suck at an old tech?

Oh and btw, halo 2 will be designed to require dx10, and as only vista will support it, it means that the install wont work on xp simply due to dx10 missing, software or hardware.

Why would that be? There wasn't a mass liquidation of the games market when DX9 came about, or DX8, so why would there when 10 comes along? Every generation of Direct X brings about new hardware and more graphically advanced games, and unless your hardware meets the requirements it wont run or wont run well. Thats the way it always has worked in PC gaming, and i've yet to see a load of companies going bust due to advances in gaming technologies all at once.
Anyway, most of these standards have been set in place years ago. The showreel for the unreal 3 engine was shown at E3 3 years ago now and is only now being released. By that time scale if your theory was true the companies should have gone bust 2-3 years ago.

Maybe in your little world but not everyones. Nvidia were saying everyone needed SM3.0 when the 6xxx series were launched but in the real world next to nothing actually used it. Heck, even now not every game uses it.

So, not so really 'simple as' is it.

Yes, but without the DX9 features, as i'm sure this generation will. It doesn't make sense for a games company to make a game only for a specific group of hardware. It will merely be intended for DX10, not exclusive to it (Halo 2 is another matter).

Depends if the G80 is optimized for DX10. Can you remember what happened with the GF2 Ultra and GF3. They went from fixed to programmable T&L. The GF2 Ultra was faster than the GF3 in most games at the time. It took the GF4 to make the leap in performance and developers to take advantage of the new tech. The G80's unified approach might actually be slower with current games. The next gen will certainly be a leap but how many people will still have the old tech?? It certainly will be interesting

I am not saying games wont work if you have DX9, I'm saying if you want to stay in tune and want the latest games running at high. etc then you will obviously need Windows Vista and a gfx card with DX10 aight'!
