DiRT Rally Hits Steam Early Access

Well, I've started to finally get the hang of my wheel and ended up in a competition with my brother in law to see who could get the best time on the leaderboard before the end of the night. We both kept beating each other by 3-4 seconds until I somehow got this time:

Worryingly I got this on the wheel with no assists and auto gears (It's too noisy using the shifter with kids in bed) so god knows when I return to manual! :D

Hi, I don't really know what all the different AA settings are (so many nowadays!)

Im getting the same FPS for 8xMSAA and 8f16xEQAA

Both give 60FPS so happy to use either, which would you choose and why?

MSAA (Multi Sampling AA) reduces the performance needed compared to SSAA. MSAA detects the edges of polygons and only increases the number of samples there.
The main advantage is that it offeres AA that does not blur and uses less performance than SSAA. the disadvantages are that some deferred-rendering engines (like UE3 and most other PS360-era engines) have problems using MSAA and often have subpar results. It also doesnt stop the aliasing of alpha-textures. Some methods like alpha-to-coverage can help smooth alpha textures using MSAA.

EQAA (Enhanced Quality AA) and CSAA (Coverage Sample AA) try to increase the quality of MSAA. The actual way it does it (increasing the number of coverage-samples while the number of color/depth/stencil-samples remain the same) it's complicated, a detailed explanation can be found here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4061/amds-radeon-hd-6970-radeon-hd-6950/10

Thanks! Yeah I've done a fair bit of reading about different AA, was basically wanting to know which one looks better (as the FPS is the same). To be honest I couldn't tell a difference between 4xMSAA 8x MSAA and 8f16xEQAA.
I will probably just leave it on 8xMSAA as it looks really nice anyway and I am not getting any jaggies.

Got this game over the Xmas period for something to pick up and play....having not played a racing game in a LONG time and loved Colin McRae rally back in the day...went straight to Career mode, wanting to progress......got the Mini and found it fairly simple to get to grips with...ended up finishing 2nd in my first Rally....not bad I thought, this isn't as tough as some of the comments I read.....so I go an buy the 450bhp Peugeot 205...OMG....its a constant battle just to keep the damn thing on the road......it literally is a beast and kicks itself all over the road with so much power, ive taken a lot of patience just to get to grips with it, let alone even remotely start to do well in stages.

Turn the assists off :) Even the Mini gets a bit exciting without ABS.

Oh I've got all the assists off, except auto gearbox, as im not quite used to that on a controller yet...don't get me wrong, the mini wasn't that easy....but got used to it fairly quickly...the 205....that was controller smashing hard to keep on the road ha

How many of you guys bought Logitech G29 for that good price you've got now in certain shop in uk?Any idea how long the wheel will be available for that price?

I got the G920 version (same wheel just for xbox/PC) bit of a clart on to get FFB working under windows 10 but since its sorted and working, been using it non stop in dirt.

As for the price not sure but its still showing online as £184 with the shifter too.

I've got the G920 with shifter for £184, really enjoy using it on Dirt. I'm using a G25/27 setup from steam and it works a treat. I would highly recommend the wheel if you don't wanna spend a fortune. :)

Had this a few weeks now and loving it. Last night I had an odd issue though.. I only run the assists - launch control/clutch override &rev counter/gear indicator from the HUD. I turned everything off inc. external cameras for 'maximum realism'

Went to custom events to try it out and do a single stage 'Wales, Dyffryn Afon - Sprint' and no matter what car from what era I chose, car would not move, no countdown, controls from wheel did nothing. Had a quick look on google but found nothing.

Yet doing the Dirt daily online, controls worked fine.

Switched the assists back on, one at a time, and only when I returned the HUD back on it then worked ok again. Other than that the game has been faultless.

Any ideas?

not sure. turn assists off though from the start they hinder you quite a bit.

as to the guy trying the pug 205 t16 yes its the fastest car in the game and a absolute beast to control.

i liken it to riding a tiger :D

Yeh I don't have them on (apart from those mentioned above), no ABS or traction control etc. I prefer realism and have the T500RS and TH8A wheel/pedals/shifter combo. Just need a separate handbrake controller to finish it off. Thrown myself into the deep end, not won a championship yet, closest I've come is 2nd!

mate...its unreal....I went from 100bhp 1960's mini to that thing and it felt like a Rodeo ride....at first I thought, this is actually impossible ha

Man this game is addictive! been on 4 hours straight this evening! :D Never thought I would get anywhere near the top 100 so I'm pleased with another decent time:
