DiRT Rally Hits Steam Early Access

This does sound excellent. Are there any really long stages? One of the things missing from CMR1 was the long stages that I liked back in Network Q RAC Rally, which had a couple of near-1-hour stages.

I don't think there are any stages quite that long but there are a few that are probably around 15mins. Most stages are 4-5 minutes and run in a 4-6 route rally format.

I think that might be a little tricky to keep the numbers up and with new content coming each month the league may become stale due to missing the content. I would say max 4 events over 4 weeks?

Or maybe just 1-2 events with 6 stages even though that would require more time for one sitting. I would probably keeps the seasons smaller with a theme around them to feel more unique and for it to feel less of a chore popping on each week to submit a time. This also then opens the possibilities for the new content or less issues if resets hit due to changes/patches.

I've been reading that RBR contained some kind of training school before you begin your career? How much does this teach someone how to rally?

Since RBR is considered the best, I've been tempted to try and grab the game... just it can't be found online for cheaper than £14.99 at uk.gamesplanet.

It doesn't teach you anything at the moment! You can either start career blind or at least do some custom rallies to get used to the handling that said it probably doesn't need too much of a driving school compared to RBR as that is far more of a sim and expects you to know all the nuances of Rally.

For Dirt Rally just take it easy to start with and over a few races you will be able to push further, also listen to the co-driver and understand what he is saying!

How well does it play on a controller vs a proper wheel? Might be tempted, but I don't have a wheel I can use, so it would be an Xbox controller. (As an aside, can you use an Xbone controller on PC natively?)

From what I've read the controllers seems to be perfectly fine more most people! Wheel wheel adds to the immersion and make the game even more terrifying but loads of peeps have been enjoying using a wheel.

This is how I finished one of my races yesterday:

May have to watch in 1080 as Youtube seems to have cut some of the end frames in other qualities...

Sorry, think I was misunderstood :p I already own DiRT Rally but the question was aimed at RBR game.

Whoops, probably me misreading X.x I think RBR would be pretty rough with a controller and you would lose most of the experience of what makes RBR special. Same with iRacing, rFactor etc.

Well I currently race using a G27. Not moved onto using the H-Shifter yet though. My thinking was that since RBR is considered a simulation. I could purchase that game and that in theory would help me when it comes to DiRT Rally? DiRT Rally doesn't provide much help to new Rally drivers, so I would hope RBR could teach me something.

For a 10 year old game though it seems pricey.

Ah, I don't think RBR would help you all that much to be honest as it is the other side of simulation it will be a lot harder to complete and race and the tutorials are shaped around their driving model. Most of that won't be transferable to Dirt Rally to the same degree. For example you probably wouldn't need to throttle the accelerator as much to hold traction, or be as hard on the handbrake.

What are you struggling with on Dirt Rally? For Dirt Rally you just need to read up on the co-driver meanings as that will be a big help to making it around a route and understanding what corner comes next and how you should approach it. (https://www.dirtgame.com/uk/blog/4529). Next up just take it slow and steady as it is far quicker than going off tracks and damaging your car. Over time you'll learn the routes to some degree and understand what the co-driver is alerting you to so you can adapt during the race.

The handling and such isn't too much of an issue to pick up you just need to try take it easy so the car doesn't go flying off the track and each tiny bump, then as you gain confidence you can push harder and try to abuse corner cuts and such.

giving it some beans :p

Really nice run! It is great how the game punishes you for being the slightest bit greedy, I recognised part of the track at like 1:30 and thought you were going a bit fast to survive it and low and behold the bumps punish you by pushing you into the banking! Great to see a racing game with so much depth.

Steam will install games to the Steamapps folder within the Steam installed directory.

You can go to Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders to create your own directory!

That won't work for Dirt Rally though as you already have it set to install to the base steamapps folder!

are you guys abusing short cuts in league races?

seems suspect that some people are so much faster than everyone else.

as long as you can pass from one part of the track to another before the time runs out the game doesn't care if you cut.

just think how much time you can save on the downhill hairpin fests if you cheated

I hope no one is playing that dirty! I think the biggest time differences are due to off track penalties or actually going off track and damage. A few bits of damage adds up due to losing some speed/control.

Peeps might be cutting in the sense of a rally racer where you may hop over an apex but I doubt anyone is actually skipping corners/jumping over hairpins. Plus in the time I've done that by accident in my own races I've usually been far worse off due to the banking being so high on most corners!

it makes no sense as the lead producer or whoever it is in charge of the project drives rally cars in real life.

they should know the handling/feedback is wrong without someone from the community coming out and telling them.

The guy they talked to is a sim racing gamer so probably gave some feedback on how other games deal with FFB and the pros/cons with the current implemented system from a sim gamer point of view. Most of the points the dev team probably know themselves but shape the FFB in a way that is feasible for the team/tools to implement of what feels right covering both the sim/arcade spectrum. As when they are developing a game they have no idea how big the install base or how popular a title will be so they need to aim for all the demographics.

FFB is also super fake in any game vs real life with most consumer wheels as they can't produce close to the same forces and you wouldn't want them too as most of us are probably half as fit as any rally driver! Also FFB is used for more than just copying the wheel feedback it tries to add some sensations of speed, g force, gears shifts and all other manner of effects one might feel in a racing car.

They talk probably covered more of that side of the spectrum, what could be boosted, what would the sim racers like to see in terms of input management and what feels off. It isn't talking to some random guy on the interwebs and having them show them the a b c's on how to create a FFB model.

Anyways, onto the game. I missed the last league by 15 minutes -.- I thought it ended at the end of today :D Ah wells.

Been having some fun the escort mk2 - what a noise! I love watching the replays they got the sound spot on from the outside. Hate the Greek tracks though, you think it's going to slide then you hit light gravel and suddenly the car gets away from you, I'm by far quickest on the snow it's nice and predictable :p

The sounds are really good :D

I've just put my time in and managed 4th.

That Lancia is sooooooooo slow on the first track X.x Stuck at like 30-40mph most of the time due to it struggling to get up the hill! No faults which is nice, I had a few incidents on the second track though which had me having to reverse. Fun races though!

I had to give up one the second league event! I was like 20 seconds off the pace in the first stage as I got stuck in a ditch and couldn't recover or get out easily xD

Then the next race I managed to just clip the side of the bank at the start that didn't cause too much of an issue...apart from it gave me a puncture, no way am I doing that stage on 3 wheels! :p

If you had a choice what would it be,project cars or dirt rally.

If you asking in a Dirt Rally thread it would probably be Dirt Rally. :p

Depends what you are looking for though, circuit racing or off road? pCARS will have a lot more choice and variety but in my opinion I didn't actually enjoy racing with it all that much where as Dirt Rally has been soooo intense.

So both are a good choice and just go with the type of racing you fancy! Or both :D

Hows everyone liking the new DLC? I'll have to give it a proper go at home over the weekend. Great shots btw Sun!
