These days I think it might be 2 years.

I still can't understand why he would start a thread and try to lie about his knowledge of PC's / Downloading and IT stuff in general.

I mean, realistically, how many people couldn't get a capture of the letter these days (even by using their phone, scanner or a relations digicam) If he was that concerned about it, he would have showed us.

He stated his PC was left on for long periods when he wasn't there - what was it doing ? Just sitting there ? Or is he going to tell us he always left it on downloading from legitimate sites. Yea - right.

And why was he singled out ? Did he actually state he had downloaded it via P2P ? And more importantly - how many people has he shared it with. If there were 80 upload connections to his file, he could be in a lot of trouble, and his claims of computer ignorance will be laughable.

arn't IP address spoof'able out of intrest?

I leave my PC on all the time doing nothing, as I'm sure many others do too. Don't particually know why I leave it on, suppose it helps to keep the office nice & warm :)

I was going to say, I do too. I don't pay for electricity and my pc belts out so much heat that it keeps me warm during the winter months. :)

Sorry, but I don't believe any of his story.

From the sounds of things, he was caught downloading illegally and is panicking now he's been caught.

And if you read some of his past posts, you will see he is far from computer illiterate (in fact 95% of people I know would have no idea what water cooling is or what a mobo is) - and someone that can afford to spend that much money on a really up to date rig definately has a camera and knows how to get captures of docs.

He must have been well aware of what he was downloading and sharing (this is what the company in question is going after here)

To think anything else is very naive. It may very well be a scam, but if he has nothing to worry about, why is a normal adult (at 21) worrying enough to post on some random forum he has hardly been a member of ? Just think about it.

And no, they weren't monitoring his internet - they were monitoring the traffic on the server which he was connected to and uploading or downloding from. He was just one of the many people that, for some strange reason, think they are invisible, when they break the law on the internet....

I'm sorry, don't get me wrong i'm not sticking up for the poor sod, but I have a fairly decent comp x3, but no camera, & no scanner, why, because I don't need them, I have a company phone which has no camera built in either.

As for the OP, don't d/l illegal files, its bad for you mmmkay. & P.S no-one has actually been taken to court over this I think.

Why would you put that link there ? Do you really think a full free demo with the word warez, keygen and serial are linking to a legit site ? Even my 74 year old dad and my 8 year neice knows what that link is and has the sense not to click on it......

Anyone can see it's promoting illegal stuff ? Just the same as the original poster "claimed" to not know what 1911 was when it was quoted in his letter. The first thing most normal people would have done is check Wiki or Google to see what they were refering too.

For Petes sake, has no one any common sense on here anymore ?

Under the UK's Anti -terrorism act :

6 months has to be held. Around 60% of ISP's hold 2 years worth.

ISP Data – retention period 6 months. Log-on (authentication user name, date and time of log-in/log-off, IP address assigned, Dial-up: CLI and number dialed, Always-on: ADSL end point/MAC address (If available).

Web Activity Logs – retention period 4 days. Proxy server logs (date/time, IP address used, URL’s visited, services. The data types here will be restricted solely to Communications Data and exclude content of communication. Web browsing information is retained to the extent that only the host machine or domain name (web site name) is disclosed. For example, within a communication, data identifying would be traffic data, whereas data identifying would be content and not subject to retention.

I can't comment on this site, but I do know a friend who bought a watch off a man on the street for 'x' amount. There was a brochure, a telephone number (which worked and got through to a secretary), and a website, which made things fairly convincing. He checked on the watchmakers website and found he had saved a lot of money.

Obviously, it was a very elaborate scam and the watch wasn't worth a fraction of what he paid.

So be careful!

I had 2 friends that brought watches like that lol @ Bluewater bloke drove past n sold em a watch each had all the same stuff as above :p

I don't know about everyone else but I've seen enough things on TV and read in the paper to know that buying a watch or perfume from some shady person in a carpark is probably going to be scam.

to be honest theres a million and one ways he could get out of paying a penny even if he is guilty.
Im kind of shocked that iv never got a letter like this, as im quite bad for downloading warez, I understand that its wrong but im not a sponger.
I will in general buy games that i like etc. But sometimes i do like to properly try before i buy, as demos are purposefully made to showcase games, so can sometimes be misleading.
And in general i dont like paying OTT for games, if they are not avail for about £17 on launch i will wait tillk they drop in price a bit.
Movies are the same, Got a skymovies subscription etc, will buy dvds and boxsets, just wont pay the dvd premium for things, because im a student and i cant afford it at this stage in my life.
Plus the cinema is a joke really, its too expensive and the adverts take the mik, and like the piracy adverts say, theres always some pillock who cant sit still, stands up, rustles laughs etc. The reason cam pirate rips are so bad is because they are filmed in a cinema.

Anyway rant over, lots of ways to avoid paying, hes bought the thing legally so he can just claim someone hacked wifi as he had no reason to download since he already legally owns the game. Good to see the pillock acting has landed him a suspension though :)

Translation:
I steal games, DVD's, Movies etc.
However its quite OK for me to do this because I'm a poor student and can't afford to actually buy the things I steal.
I only buy games when they are £18 - I'll happily steal them until they are at such a price.
I'm no better than any other software/movie thief, but my cheeky smilie at the end of the post makes it all OK.

Oh and as to the "Million and one ways" he could get away with things.
Fancy listing just one - you haven't done yet.
Remembering that ignorance is not actually a valid defence.
"Somebody hijacked my wifi connection" is not going to work.

legally it's not stealing so your post could be considered libel and defamatory. :)
