Display driver not responding - OCUK 6870

I just sent mine back and bought an EVGA GTX 460. I phoned Overclockers and apparently they've had a lot of these cards returned. Most of them can't even get to the post screen.

I got an RMA number from OCUK, I was debating whether to return it as I was wary that OCUK testers would not find any problems and I would get charged.

Sounds like it might be worth returning it though.

Yeah I spoke to them and he asked if it was faulty. I said "Not really, it's just critically flawed". He understood that the card won't work for most people and said that if they find that it isn't faulty, I'll get a refund under the 'Unwanted' category.

RMA. What's DSR?

Distance selling regulations. Basically when you haven't had a face to face sale and haven't been able to see the product, you have 7 days to evaluate it, and if you're not happy return it boxed with all accessories etc for a full refund including postage.

As for the problem, I had quite a few issues with my XFX 6870. Normally I would just update the drivers and off it goes no problem. But I was getting BSOD when bench marking so I ran a driver sweeper and then re installed CCC. Worked fine since.

It's not a legal requirement for the retailer to refund the return postage (some do though). To quote the OFT guidelines:

"Returning goods
Only if it is covered in the contract and the written information
can you require the consumer to pay for the cost of returning
the ordered goods."

So it really depends on what it says in the retailers support / contract description.

In ocUKs case, it says:

"If you exercise your right of cancellation under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) after the goods have been delivered to you, you will be responsible for returning the goods to Overclockers UK at your own cost. "

So looks like you are liable for the return cost under DSR.

PS. I returned something recently under DSR and I paid the return cost. Can't say it worried me overly, just glad to get my £360 back for the graphics card!

If you request a return under the DSR do you still get an RMA number ?

This is my RMA description:
"Problem / Fault description: Unwanted [Product is of Poor Quality],
Desired action: Refund,"

So it sounds like it is being returned under DSR rather than faulty goods?
(I didn't specify I wanted to return under DSR, I just said it was incapable of running at stock speeds and therefore inadequate for my needs.)

Yes.

The RMA number is just an identifier, so that they can track it through their returns system.

As I may have commented before. Follow the returns directions in their Email TO THE LETTER. There was a post recently from someone that had returned an item in one of the PO silver plastic carrier bags (rather than a plain brown box, as per ocUKs Email) and ocUK refused to accept the parcel! and the OP then had a hell of a time sorting things out!

Good luck.

My experiences of returns to these folks have always been good (as long as you follow their guidelines).

:)

I just got one of these cards and have the exact same problem. It was swapped out for a 5850 that had no problems at all. Lowering the core by 50MHz seems to have stopped it crashing out constantly, but even though the card is cheap you shouldn't have to underclock it to make it work :(

Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it shouldn't actually work.

Agree lol, so did u change the main clock core to 850mhz, would it be slower wen running the game? myt keep mine and do the same if thats the case.

Sent mine back today, had a bit of a nightmare last night when the card decided to repeatedly crash over and over again on the desktop, couldn't do anything! Card was underclocked, so I don't know what happend there.

I'm guessing most of you paid the pre purchase price of what was it £120? I guess the lesson is you get what you pay for. :p

I did yes and have no problems what so ever,Anyway what difference would it make if i payed £120 for the card new or £200,your comment makes no sense to me ;)

I'm getting crashes when just browsing now, even with the card underclocked. I think there is definately something faulty with it.

Yeaahhhh send that back. My replacement EVGA GTX 460 Superclocked will arrive tomorrow, I'll let you know how that compares. It's £5 cheaper and I think it's slightly less powerful than the 6870. However, the 6870 is awful to overclock and the 460 is apparently one of the best cards to overclock, so I reckon I'll be able to at least match the performance of the 6870.
