DLSS 5 preview

Haven't watch the Nvidia release video so apologies if this has already been covered.
Are Nvidia going to lock DLSS5 to 5-series only, even though it's been proven to run as far back as the 2-series?
Yes, so far that's the official information. No word about older series officially given.

Ok I got impatient waiting for the SDK and hacked it into my UE engine build.

Interesting the difference in this kind of scene....it's definitely a nice improvement, the lighting on the ship looks a lot more grounded in the skybox, the lighting from the nebula in the background seems to be casting the diffuse light onto the ship much more realistically. Me like.

GPU time doubles from 7.5ms to 15ms mind!
Frankly, I couldn't tell which one is which as both in space are completely unrealistic (the ship would be just black, nebulae are so far away that there's no big enough amount of light to lit up anything etc.). So it's fake lighting replaced with fake lighting, neither have any realism in it, in this specific case. :)

That said, game looks cool!

Tried it in Cyberpunk 2077 on my 4080 and it was hitting around 70-80fps with DLSS performance / and frame gen. So obviously not a good experience, but it was just about playable.

Also got it working on The Sims 4, which needed a few extra steps, but it works. performance hovering around 60fps so I would call that payable, but again not great performance.

It does make a huge difference though in older titles, I was sceptical but it can be quite transformational. :D

6x FG?

I might have a look if/when performance improves considerably, but having said that, by the time that's the case I'll be priced out of new GPUs completely!

If I played older titles where performance was such that FG isn't required I may take a look (unless FG is enforced when it's enabled?).

DLSS 5 is a real headache for AMD. They are already behind on performance and now another "The way it's meant to be played" card from Nvidia.

I was considering cashing in on the crazy 5090 prices and getting a 9070xt but not now.

They need to get RDNA 5 out quick with a massive lead to counter
I was going to do exactly the same, seemed a no brainer but this makes £2.5K money well spent.

"The Founders Edition, limited to a single 12V-2x6 connector, dropped framerates by 42 to 49 percent with DLSS 5 enabled and consistently hit its 575 W power limit while doing so. The MSI Lightning Z, with a dual-connector setup and a 1000 W limit, took a smaller hit and held better 1% lows, while pulling far more power. In Hogwarts Legacy, it jumped from 480 W to 720 W with neural rendering active, which is a sizeable 50% increase. That leaves single-connector RTX 5090 cards apparently underprovisioned for a feature this demanding, at least unofficially."

Interesting, its not magic after all! Looking forward to some deep dives into the tech and see where it goes.

DLSS5 for me in its current form is just not a polished or even finished product, its inconsistent results. The wild exaggeration of colours to create contrast, the shadows are all wrong, it makes faces look older and so much more. These artist spent so much time tuning colours and scenes to be semi realistic. It reminds of me certain phone brands that heavily process the photo to make them pop. You get almost neon green grass and rosy red cheeks.

there is definitely misjudging of direction in shadow rendering, inverse ghosting, haloing effect around sharp borders, all kinds of tone mapping clashes, perceptual darkness tricks for higher resolution, structural morphing, character aging effects, background shifting, objects blinking, sub pixel shimmering and more.

it has promise, but this implementation is just not it. For most untrained eyes this looks amazing, but to digital artist, 3d renders or anyone involved in games development this is not ideal. There needs to be more consistency some scenes look great and some meh, reminds me of those old 3d tv.

The issue with AMD is they don't pay devs to put their tech into games anywhere near as much as Nvidia does so while the 9070XT by itself is a very good card, The amount of games for example with AMD's version of Ray Reconstruction, Ray Regeneration, Is in a total of 2 games...2 that don't really need it, CoD and Crimson Desert... that's terrible.

Think of it as DLSS 1.0. It will get better and in 3-4 years it will be much better.

Nice to have and mess about with I say. So can't see the downside of it.

The 9070 XT would have been a temporary card until the hopeful price correction after the bubble bursts and then I would have used the 5090 proceeds to buy next gen.

The problem is I can't stop tinkering with DLSS 5 now haha

I think Mass effect is next to try. Still never played iit past the intro mission as it was a bit dated.

Make sure you get the Legendary Edition as it has loads of fixes and random nice updates. The series itself is bloody brilliant, Very very much worth investing time into.

Gotta admit, GTA V fully maxed out with DLSS 5 on top looks pretty good.

So good, I'm actually going to start playing it! :p

I've played the opening mission, The first mission where you steal a couple of cars and that's it, Just couldn't get into it.

DLSS Swapper gets DLSS 5

It's not DLSS Swapper, The author of the original program said this DLSS5 program has nothing to do with his and they likely chose the name to deceive people which makes me wonder if there's some naughty code in there.
