I don't think you sound like a crank at all - the fact that you can't so much as scratch your arse in public without it being picked up on CCTV, the proposed ID card scheme and now this, all says to me that this country is hurtling towards a police state. And the best the Government can do by way of a pathetic smokescreen is that old chestnut “prevention of terrorism” - keep the masses living in fear and you can do anything it seems ...

And as regards the setting up and running of a DNA database - I wouldn't trust this shower of **** to organise a ****-up in a brewery :mad:

it's not paranoia, just look at the past. I agree potentially a lot of good, but at the same time there's a unacceptable risk.

Loads of rights, why should I have to give the goverment any dna.

Sold to 3rd parties, including insurance, used for diffrent agencies related to the goverment, The system will cost billions and wont be secure. There's no safeguards in place to stop the goverment using the data for anything it wants. The system will be seen as infallible, when in fact it will be.

Also how long will it take too implement, they reckon the id cards will take decades, due to the time biometric data takes to record.

The thing is, if something like this is going to happen, then it will do regardless.

I think the good that can come from it far out weighs the potential bad points you make.

But there's so many bad points, then there's ones no ones even thought of yet.

How about people being taxed more, as there likely to get genetic medical conditions. premiums on car insurance as your genes show a link to aggression or speeding. Premiums on private health insurance. Murder at a restaurant. Use the dna on cutlery to haul everyone in who was there. How about being framed, all you have to do is plant a little blood or some hair, knowing they will pick it up and have the "killer within days".
Then there's the whole security issue, cost, time frame etc.

It's just another erosion of our rights, to make an increasingly more dangerous and powerful goverment. Look at all the terror laws in recent years, just to keep us safe. Oh thanks I feel so much safer as you can know hold me without charge.

There are multiple posts outlying the concerns people have with massive government projects to monitor everyone more and more.

The responses are one-line irrelevancies wthout any substance whatsoever and what are effectively threats by proxy.(*)

It's obvious which has more credibility.

* The "only people with something to hide need fear this" argument inevitably means that anyone who objects to it on any grounds will be presumed guilty of something serious. If having something to hide is the only reason to object to something, then everyone who objects to it has something to hide, QED.

Why bother? All they need to do is take some body fluid of yours and leave it at the scene. Like they could do right now.

Oh - and you can't reverse-engineer DNA from the profile anyway: it's completely impossible.

Right, yet again:

The DNA profile contains only two useful pieces of information:

1) Your gender.

2) Whether you have one specific type of red hair (yes, really).

The rest consists of "junk DNA" (look up Short Tandem Repeats), with no genetically useful information. It is worthless to any insurance company etc.
