Do graphics really need to be any better than they are right now?

The thing about life like, Is it's wierd.

If you go back to the 90s there were 2 series of games, Called Phantasmagoria and Gabriel Knight, They were really good games, And they used actual people!

You're not going to get more life like than that :p

But I'm guessing you want developers to beable to create textures and models that are just like human faces, That takes more than just technology, That takes an artist.

I'll tell you what I have noticed with regards to graphics in games, With regards to the PC version of most games, The Mod community greatly improves on anything ever done by the actual developers.

Have you seen the Half Life 2 Texture packs released for the game? They are leaps and bounds ahead of what they were initially.

Same goes for things like cars in GTA: San Andreas, And obviously all the Oblivion Mods available.

You'll notice my post is on topic, But a complete shamble of a ramble :D

I'd like Anti-Aliasing to be standard, at least 8x on all titles @ 1080p

Better AI is required, it's the one thing I notice more than anything in modern games.

Same, I hate seeing people running towards me when they are out gunned. Takes away the realism.

I want panicking bad guys, Who hide behind crates and blind fire, Or run away. But then i want an equal balance! I don't want every guy to run away, Or every guy to blind fire, I want some to stand and fight too. Or

what about surrendering? Only game I have ever known to offer a surrendering enemy is Metal Gear. I think out gunning someone and forcing a surrender could be awesome!

AA should be a requirement but would you really need that much AA? It just seems like a waste of resources to me which could be used better elsewhere in the game. I was also of the impression that the higher the resolution the less AA you would need to apply.

Because I'm a freak! Straiiiiiiiiiight liiiiiiiiiiiiiines.

More of a pc rant but graphics card technology isn't being pushed due to lack of competition and games being dictated rather than dictating was performance they need.

Will be interesting to see how successful GTA 4 is, any estimates, GTA 4 will be good graphicaly and continue its excellent gameplay.

So i m expecting couple of million sales in the first week.

Analyst: GTA IV to ship 5.8 million in first week

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey has said that Rockstar’s forthcoming Grand Theft Auto IV may ship as many as 5.8 million units globally in its first week of release.

Hickey’s comments come following a note to Gamestop investors this week, where he discussed a number of titles expected to yield strong sales at retail for the year.

Highlighting GTA IV, which is scheduled to launch worldwide on April 29, Hickey stated, "We expect [GameStop] will benefit from the release of GTA IV in their fiscal Q2 08 period, which could ship 5.8 million units in the first week or $360 million in retail sales and potentially $110 million for the Company.”

His comments echo that of Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter, who said last month that he expects the crime romp to ship around 6 million units worldwide in one week.

Touching on this statement, Pachter told Next-Gen.biz yesterday, "That number is unlikely to sell through right away, probably closer to 4 million units.”

Stay tuned.

Just so long as they're less linear and more playable, unlike most FPS are today.

I don't really care about graphics too much ex. Starcraft still looks fine to me as long as it fits in with the style and gameplay. Thing I care about is we have seen nothing new. Things just a little prettier nothing essentially new with the power available to them. Gta4 and alone in the dark are a step in the right direction I think giving the player more freedom to do what they want instead of being forced into a set route or allow for more creativity

It's depends what you mean when you say "graphics". IMO it means all of these:

Textures
Modelling
Animation
Lighting

Textures at the moment, imo are fine. There is always room for improvement.
Modelling could get better, I want to see more detail on people. Individual hair strands etc. I won't go into detail because it should be obvious.
Animation still sucks a lot.
Lighting is getting better. It's what puts the realistic touch to the textures.

I speak about realism but... I dunno how to put this across. I only half care for it.

Racing games need it, but then they don't. I want to go really fast round corners and do loads of drifts etc. But we all know that tires don't like this and I don't want the game to put me in the pits every time I realistically wear them down.

FPS/Shooters etc. Let's be honest they will never be realistic. I see people firing AK-47s on TV and they have terrible accuracy. Can't really be said in games.

Trying not to sound lame. I use games to put my head in a different and more surreal place. I love FPS's but you would never see me joining the army.

If I wanted FPSs to be real, when I shot some guy outside his house in a game, his wife and kids should come out crying and screaming at me. I will pass thanks. People say Condemned is scary, this would just be distressing.

i remember when i got my sega saturn i thought games couldn't get any better looking...

then i got a pc a few years later and i thought games couldn't get any better looking again.

now if i compare the graphics i have experienced over they years there is always a game that will pop up and i think wow how can that look any better. yet from experience i know that the amazing graphics im watching will look like crap in the future.

i was utterly amazed at the graphics in UT1 and then i got quake 3 soon after and was amazed again...

yet both they games look like crap now.

I dont worry so much about graphics, these will get better over the years, thats just fact, they will be as good as they can be at the time stuff is made.

What I REALLY wanna see are some major enviroment Physics, realtime wind/ rain and water, with them having reall effects on everything around it, including characters.

Imagine COD4, online, but when you chuck a granade it can blow parts of buildings up, imagine being able to take out a sniper who is on the top floor by wiping half of the floor out and killing half of the rest of his team from the falling debrie!

Yes of course they need to get better. In 10 years times we'll be laughing at GT5p. Look at the first granturismo for example.

Would we be happy now if games still looked the same as Alien Breed 2 on the amiga?

Hardware is always going to get better, so are graphics in games.
